Led by Apple’s iPhone, foreign-branded smartphone shipments in China rise 1.8% YoY in April

Shipments of foreign-branded mobile phones in China — overwhelmingly driven by Apple iPhone sales — increased 1.8% year-over-year in April, according to data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

A total of 3.59 million foreign-branded phones were shipped in China last month. For comparison, overall smartphone shipments in the country rose a stronger 2.8% to 25.73 million units.

While the 1.8% growth for foreign brands (primarily Apple iPhone) is modest, it marks a return to positive territory and a welcome sign after several challenging quarters in the world’s largest smartphone market. Apple continues to face stiff competition from domestic Chinese brands such as Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi.
