Apple is said to be set to undertake comprehensive software redesigns for iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16, marking one of the most significant updates to its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems ever. These updates will reportedly extend far beyond mere cosmetic changes, fundamentally transforming how users engage with their devices for years ahead. The overhaul will encompass both the visual interface—its appearance—and the functional experience—its operation—representing a daring step for a company with over 2 billion active devices worldwide.
Mark Gurman for Bloomberg news:
Despite the risks involved in major interface changes, top Apple executives say they are confident that users will love the new look and feel. The trick is creating something that appeals both to the hundreds of millions of current users and the new customers that Apple hopes to add in the coming years.
While iOS has steadily seen improvements and additions over the past two decades, it’s undeniable that the current look adheres to what Steve Jobs introduced all the way back in 2007. Then there’s the issue of Apple’s different operating systems not having a similar feel… The new interfaces will adopt the design principles introduced in visionOS, the software for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. That includes greater transparency and new types of windows and buttons — and that should make all Apple devices feel more consistent and familiar.
What looks new is what sells, especially in the case of Apple, and these dramatic changes could end up being the most exciting takeaway from the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. They could also serve as a timely distraction: Apple is in the midst of an AI crisis, and a new look will absolutely push attention away from that reality.

I hope there is support for Intel Macs 🖥️
Honestly, a UI overhaul of this caliber would be the best time to drop support for Intel Macs.
Apple stopped selling Intel based Macs less than two years ago.
Apple routinely supports Macs from the day they stop selling them for five years with full OS support and limited security updates for another two years.
It would be a major slap in the face for Intel based Mac Pro users who bought an Intel based Mac Pro in June of 2023 to have zero OS updates starting this fall.
I just bought a CTO/BTO iMac Pro a couple of months back.
It’s a hell of a workstation.
Tim Cook would like that because he would be happy to see two-year old Macs head to the landfill.
Apple’s switch to ARM processors enriches Apple while fugging up the MacOS for Intel users and destroying Windows and Linux compatibility.
I would much rather see Apple put its programming and development efforts into fixing Siri and such. Doing a revamp of the interfaces and underpinnings of Mac OS, iOS, iPad OS instead of fixing things like Siri is unnecessary fluff.
I would rather see Apple not cave to any government and keep their privacy controls, including opting out of AI anything, in place.
If anyone knows how to move successfully to Linux without loses files/photos/etc., please share.
I do not trust Mr Cook and company, nor any big tech entity, or any government, at all.
Standardisation of interfaces isn’t always a good thing. See macOS’ System Settings app.
System Settings is a confusing mess of things.
Oh joy! They will dummy everything down and we’ll lose all the extended features we gained over the years! Like windows, they dummied down the right click and you get a basic menu with worthless options.
Don’t do it Apple!
Expect more bugs introduced to Intel Macs.
Fire Tim Cook!
I sure Tim Cook and his “foreign” programmers will screw the pooch on this one for sure.
Way past time to replace Tim Cook.
