President Trump says he’ll impose retaliatory tariffs for digital taxes, fines, practices, and policies on Apple, other American tech firms

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that he would issue a Presidential Memorandum imposing tariffs on nations that apply digital service taxes to Apple and other American tech firms.

Reuters:

A White House official, providing details of the order, said Trump was directing his administration to consider responsive actions like tariffs “to combat the digital service taxes (DSTs), fines, practices, and policies that foreign governments levy on American companies.”

“President Trump will not allow foreign governments to appropriate America’s tax base for their own benefit,” the official said.

The memo directs the U.S. Trade Representative’s office to renew digital service taxes investigations that were initiated during Trump’s first term, and investigate any additional countries that use a digital tax “to discriminate against U.S. companies,” the official said.

Trump said last week that he would impose tariffs on Canada and France over their digital services taxes, and a White House fact sheet released at the time said that “only America should be allowed to tax American firms… Overall, these non-reciprocal taxes cost America’s firms over $2 billion per year. Reciprocal tariffs will bring back fairness and prosperity to the distorted international trade system and stop Americans from being taken advantage of.”

The digital service taxes aimed at U.S. tech giants including Alphabet’s Google, Meta’s Facebook, Apple, and Amazon have been a source of trade disputes for years.

Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, India, Austria and Canada have imposed the taxes, levied on revenues earned from digital services sold within their borders.

  1. Some dummies haven’t realized, yet…one-Worlderism has been largely rejected and a form of WW indi-nationalism is a response. This too is Trump’s responsibility, of course.

  2. No pain, no gain. Short term, tariffs will make things more expensive here in the US (and abroad, I think). However, they should motivate manufacturers to start making things here again, helping the country as a whole in the long term.

    1. One has to remember, the US is a sovereign country and it’s leader serves its citizenry.
#1 on the list of concerns was immigration. Since Trump’s installment, the flow has gone from 10’s of thousands/month to hundreds/mo.
If “people” (other countries) hate Trump for this, so f’g what. The US prez serves the US and fulfillment of law presides…not the favor of other nations.
On this topic, the tide is changing in the EU (for one) and while the leadership is limp-wristed, the population is vehemently against the same open-border BS. Should the EU look to another nation for approval on this issue? If one think’s “yes,” say hello to World Bank, WEF, UN and other anti-sovereignty fanatics that seek control.
Or, maybe one hates the firings? Typical liberal mindset that embraces policies that are financial unsustainable. The $$ tree can be shaken only for so long.

    1. Absolutely no doubt; you’re a liberal. Liberals, to a material degree, are led by emotions at the expense of objective reason. Boat-loads and boat-loads of empathy will never resolve debt…and a debt cycle that’s brings default, or demise, ain’t “positive.”

        1. As Hamas executed a horrendous attack on Israelis and Russia saw fit to attack Ukr…while known terrorists were crossing the border in April 24 (FBI explicit statement) during the previous admin.

Trump dealt strongly and no $$ for Iran in 1st term. No mid-east atrocities. Abraham Accords was signed. No wars.

Trump is a strong force. Time will tell, but history confirms terrorists and other malfeasants flee when encountering a strong force.

      1. As America no more exists, I, as lucky “libéral” leave this caricatural Trumpica behind.
I’ll watch it’s Great sh..t sinking religious and nationalist delirium from far away!
        Bye, bye narrow minded colonialists!

  3. When that American Company sells a product in another country it is bound by the Tax Rules of that Country as well as America. So they should pay tax on their goods there. Apple and Amazon pay barely any taxes in the rest of the World because they route income from many countries through a holding company elsewhere to evade paying taxes.

Why should we let you bleed us dry?

    Go to hell Trump
