Taiwan should pay the U.S. for its defense, former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Bloomberg Businessweek in a story published Tuesday, sending shares of major Apple supplier Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC lower on Wednesday.

Reuters:

“I know the people very well, respect them greatly. They did take about 100% of our chip business. I think, Taiwan should pay us for defense,” Trump said in interview on June 25 that was published on Tuesday. “You know, we’re no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn’t give us anything.”

The United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, but they have no formal defense agreement, unlike what Washington has with South Korea and Japan. The U.S. is, however, bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.

Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai, responding to Trump’s comments, said Taiwan and the U.S. have good relations despite the lack of formal ties, and is dedicated to bolstering its own defenses.

Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has complained of repeated Chinese military activity over the past four years as Beijing seeks to pressure the democratically governed island which rejects China’s sovereignty claims…

Washington and Taipei have had no official diplomatic or military relationship since 1979, when the U.S. switched recognition to Beijing and terminated a mutual defense treaty.

    1. Yeah, countries should just get stuff from the U.S. at no cost except, of course, to the American taxpayer.

The American taxpayer should provide defense, food, aid, etc. for other countries while the shitty, demented, corrupt, inept Democrat-destroyed federal government lets other countries send their inmates, criminals, terrorists, and drug traffickers streaming over an unsecured border.

You’re gonna lose Bigly, you weak-minded, dumb-ass rube.

        1. If only President Biden did not CANCEL Trump’s border policy on DAY ONE of his presidency, we would NOT NEED the worst border bill ever written to benefit Democrat voters. You cherry pick and do not provide the full picture and history, NOTED. You’ll be whining tonight when Trump accepts the Republican nomination and the cry in November…

    2. NATO responded with “What?” (“everything is transactional”–like fraz) when, during his 1st term, Trump demanded they up their expenditures on “self-protection.” What did they do? They increased their funding commitment…probably b/c “transactional” is often rational.

    3. Only Libs want to subsidize everyone but Americans …. illegal aliens (10 million), the NATO ‘never 2 percerters’, the Taiwanese deadbeats who expropriated the chip industry from America, deadbeat college students who signed on to pay for the debts and now want to weasel out of them, and even ‘modern day victims’ of slavery from yesteryear demanding free money for doing absolutely nothing. That is what frazman62 is all about … giveaway artist, still working his way through puberty.

  1. What?! Taiwan “took” 100% of the chip business from the US? How so? What exactly is preventing the US from “taking” 100% of Taiwan’s chip business back?
