Boring Galaxy S7 isn’t beleaguered Samsung’s next big thing

“Samsung’s new Galaxy S7, for all of its bells and whistles, isn’t Samsung’s Next Big Thing,” Jay McGregor writes for Forbes. “It’s kind of just another smartphone.”

“The backlash to Samsung’s water susceptible, microSD-less, small batteried Galaxy S6 has clearly informed the design choices of the S7. But I wonder if regaining those lost Samsung users took priority over innovation,” McGregor writes. “The S7 is undoubtedly an incremental upgrade that refines and builds on last year’s S6. That’s obvious to everyone.”

“Samsung has a habit for the audacious, it doesn’t shy away from an expensive gamble or bombastic idea that’s destined for the dustbin. Curved screens, air gestures, ‘beauty modes’ and mildly offensive theatre productions are just some of Samsung’s efforts to be different in previous years,” McGregor writes. “Nothing like this was present in this year. It was, by Samsung’s standards, a very bland launch with no surprises and no Samsung wow factor.”
