What you might not know about the camera on Apple’s next-gen iPhone

“The camera on the next iPhone may use electronic, not optical image stabilization,” Bryan M. Wolfe reports for AppAdvice.

“The ‘iPhone 6’ camera could also boast a larger pixel size of 1.75 um compared to the 1.5 um pixel size of the iPhone 5s’ camera, according to new findings shared with Weibo by ESM China analyst Sun Chang Xu,” Wolfe reports. “According to Xu, adding an electronic image stabilization system would allow for the device to have a slimmer camera that doesn’t protrude out of its body.”

“Apple’s next iPhone is likely to feature a 4.7-inch sapphire crystal display. The new handset will feature a pill shaped power button on the right side of the device, as opposed to the top,” Wolfe reports. “It will also come with an ‘A8’ processor and ‘M8’ motion coprocessor, and a better camera.”

  1. I think they are making a huge misstep by not going with OIS and still relying on EIS. Most of the competition has moved to OIS for their flagships and it’s a dramatic difference. Obviously this only affects stabilization and the iPhone camera is superior in every other way and in most cases (not all) provides better pictures. However images that need stabilization come out leagues better with OIS as compared to EIS and I wish Apple would have at least opted to catch up with the competition in this regard instead of pursuing their never ending thin lust. All this of course is if the rumors are true… we’ll see.

  2. What the author might know about Apple’s next iPhone:

    Nothing.

It hasn’t been announced yet, and this article is nothing more than a partial summary of some of the rumors.

  3. You did not understand there is currently 2 types of “IS”
1-Optical (Audio Voice Coil) like speaker movement
    2-Digital

Apple is trying to use a third type
3-Electronic which means it is some sort of piezoelectric ore electronic-mechanical movement.
*this wil provide smaller, faster and with less meant time between failures.

  4. Better camera is always great to have. I know I love how the 5s takes great shots even indoors!

What I worry about is the future iPhones going way too big like Samsung. 4.7 stil seems way big for easy one hand use across the entire screen. I hope Aplle doesn’t drop the current size.

  5. Apples current “stabilization” is not optic or electronic, but is closer to electronic than optical. What the camera does is take a burst of 4 images then merge those into a single file using the sharpest parts of each image. This really isn’t “stabilization”, which is accomplished by keep the sensor aligned with the light path using some optical component in the lens, or by moving the sensor itself.
