Jonny Evans asks for Computerworld, “What does a watch do? It’s primary function is to tell the time. This should be the key metric as Samsung attempts to go head-to-head with Apple next month, so what will the Korean conglomerate learn from Cupertino’s iWatch when Apple responds in 2014?”
“At its heart Samsung is an industrial conglomerate. It is open to question just how much design ability the company has to deploy,” Evans writes. “Over at Apple, Jony Ive’s team already has a reputation for design, and will be equally motivated by a desire to maintain that credibility, while also hoping to kick anything competitors might release to the curb.”
Evans writes, “I suspect Samsung will gain the first to market advantage with its product, but anticipate weak aesthetic design, a limited set of features and a compromised user interface will offer little challenge for Apple as it moves to introduce iWatch, potentially in 2014.”

Not to listen to rumours?
I cant help but think these rumours are designed to misdirect the competition.
Only time will tell.
Yeah, but will it tell time?
iTime iWill iTell.
Just about the most pointless article written in a while, eliciting a fairly pointless response from me.
It’s funny samsung used to just copy apple products, now they’ve gone to copying apple rummers. It will be interesting to see what a mess this will be without having the actual product to copy.
I would love to run or go for a hike without that big (yes big) iPhone in my pocket but still get info from the outside world… keeping me in touch – so yes yes yes go go go
But why? The whole chuffing point about going for a run or hike is to have time to yourself, and get some solitude and thinking time. Many places I go have little or no network connections anyway, which makes online mapping useless, so I always have contour maps installed for wherever I go.
Why this obsessive need to always be in contact?
Don’t worry, it’s only the BookFace set that are like this. Scared they might miss out on something or not be “liked” often enough!
I don’t want a touch screen watch- I’ve used the nano as a watch and it’s abominable.
Then again, “iWatch” don’t need to be a wristwatch, do it?
“I suspect Samsung will gain the first to market advantage with its product” – wrong
Companies have put out various products. I think Sony just came out with some update to theirs.
And we know how well that “first to market” crap works for RIM, Nokia, Motorola, Microsoft, etc.
I’m looking forward to comparing Samsung’s soon to be released smart watch with the one that they release shortly after Apple launches the iWatch. I think that it will be a very vivid example of how Samsung can only copy instead of innovating all by themselves.
Not to get off topic but this theme should play out with samsungs soon to be released OS (Tizon). That will be a blatant copy of all OS out in public. Samsung is incapable of original thought.
“This(Samsung) phone and iPhone are like heaven and earth, make it more like the iPhone”, words from Samsung execs to R&D.
How to do it correctly.
Samsung 21″ Galactic SmartWatch! I predicted it here on MDN! Just wait and see!
Telling time is the last thing this device will be about except where I is important in other applications.
“What Samsung will learn from Apple’s iWatch?”
How to make a watch.
