Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion’s 10 most important new features

“We knew OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion’s arrival was imminent after Apple announced at WWDC 2012 that we’d see it in July, and sure enough, Apple just posted the final version of its revamped operating system for the Mac — the so-called ‘gold master’ — to developers on July 9,” Matt Peckham reports for TIME Magazine. “I’ve been running a copy since then, in fact.”

“When can you snag your own copy for $19.99 (in fact $10 cheaper than OS X Lion sold for a year ago)? Apple has until the end of July to make good on its WWDC promise,” Peckham reports. “If we assume the company’s aiming for a Wednesday release again, we’ll most likely see it on either July 18 — a week from today — or by the following Wednesday, July 25.”

“Apple claims Mountain Lion will ship with some 200 new features, most of them incremental, but a few alter the playing field enough to warrant special mention,” Peckham reports. “Here’s a rundown of the 10 most significant ones.”

Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion’s 10 Most Important New Features:
• AirPlay Mirroring
• Notification Center
• Messages
• Power Nap
• Game Center
• Gatekeeper
• Safari 6.0
• Dictation

  1. Of ‘Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion’s 10 Most Important New Features’, the only ones of *any* value to me:
    • AirPlay Mirroring
    • Safari 6.0
    • Dictation

    1. What I really would have preferred to read:
“10 Reasons Why Mountain Lion is Snappier, Less Buggy Than Lion or Snow Leopard”

Yup. Since this is going to need such high-powered graphics chips I wonder how much like Aero on WinXP (Vista) it will be?

  2. • AirPlay Mirroring

Is there going to be something other than their “Hobby” to mirror to? Will it work directly between my MacBook and their “Hobby” or will I still need another box to provide a network to go through?

    • Notification Center

Can’t wait for it to start “notifying” me about sale specials and ‘this weekend only’ deals.

    • Messages

    Good one.

    • Power Nap

I don’t even know what this is, but from the sound of it I can imagine that it will be something to drive up the consumption of my capped monthly allowance of data without my knowledge or specific approval. I know people that are running into real problems with “things” sucking down their data allowance without them knowing about it.

    • Game Center

Don’t play games, but I guess this is good.

    • Gatekeeper

As long as it doesn’t cramp the style of anything useful.

    • Safari 6.0

Features other that eye candy and FB and Twitter integration?

    • Dictation

Can’t wait for everyone to hear what I’m saying.

    • Reminders, Notes and Twitter

Why is Reminders so pathetic? Look at the iOS app Paperless and dream. Why is Notes so pathetic? Look at PalmOS’s Memo and dream. Maybe some functions will be added. Just deleted my FB and Twitter accounts the other day.

    • iCloud

I already sync my book marks and calendar between MacBook and iPad, so…? I guess the addition of Reminders will make this good.

Call me Jaded. Lion does this to you. 🙂

    1. Airplay mirroring is designed to only work with the Apple TV. Assuming you already have a wireless network established, and an AppleTV, then you should be good to go………….except…………….airplay mirroring only works with 2011 and newer machines.

      Major bummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Airplay mirroring is limited to 2011 or newer Macs only. When I read the tech specs for Mountain lion and discovered this I wasn’t so happy about this feature and wouldn’t put it on the 10 best list since it is so limited to who can actually use it.
Powernap, again only the latest 2012 Macbook Pros and airs will be able to use this feature. So now only 8 new features out of 10 to be excited about. Not so exciting now actually.

  4. I’m mostly bummed because AirPlay won’t be supported on my just less than three-year-old MacBook Pro. But I’m looking forward to notification center, he new Safari, and documents in the cloud (hopefully with a new version of Pages).

I’m also hoping for more multi-touch gestures.

  5. Can anyone explain to me why Apple is only supporting mid 2011 or newer Macs for Airplay Mirroring? I mean, is there a technical reason for this, or is Apple simply being greedy? Because Air Parrot works on my 2009 MacBook Pro, but it isn’t a very good product, so I was hoping Airplay mirroring would be a good alternative. Guess I won’t be in any hurry to upgrade to Mountain Lion, except to correct all the crap that is inherent in Lion.

  6. What I really want is iCloud, along with iTunes Match, for multiple users on one Mac. As it is now only one of us is permitted use per Mac. For us, that’s a real bummer.

  7. No, the most important feature of Mountain Lion is…

GET THE BLEEDIN’ ADDRESS BOOK SORTED OUT, YOU MUPPETS.

It is without doubt the most god-awfully designed, buggy, slip-shod shite Apple have ever shipped my way. Whoever was responsible for it should have been sacked.

    Actually, strike that.

They should have be de-goolied . . . then sacked.

    1. I agree. HATE the new design of Lion’s Address Book. In trying to make it look like a paper address book, Apple made it harder to use and more clicks to edit, add people to groups, etc. I really don’t need a page turn in it.

  8. Looks great as far as game-changing features. Air-play mirroring and powernap on my retina MBP, dictation, highly customizable notification center, messages, and beefed up iCloud with (crossing my fingers) new iWork that takes advantage of it are BIG. Getting back “save as” will be nice too. The rest is just gravy. Your mileage may differ…
