ARM unveils new Cortex A7 processor; 5x smaller and 5x more efficient than today’s chips

“Arm Holdings has unveiled a new microchip design that could allow the development of smartphones costing less than $100 by 2013,” Maija Palmer reports for The Financial Times.

“The UK-based company unveiled a microprocessor design that is one-fifth the size of those used in smartphones today, and five times more efficient,” Palmer reports. “The new Cortex A7 processor will also help Arm maintain its dominance in the mobile phone and tablet market, where it is increasingly being challenged by Intel. Known for its extremely small and power-efficient processors, Arm’s designs are used in Apple’s popular iPhone and iPad devices.”

Palmer reports, “The new A7 processor, which is expected to be in devices within two years, could help solve the problem of short battery life experienced by users of high-end smartphones.”
