Apple set to unveil new iPhone, iOS 5 today

“Apple Inc looks set to unveil a new iPhone on Tuesday after a 15-month hiatus,” Poornima Gupta reports for Reuters. “Newly appointed CEO Tim Cook will do the honors this time from Apple’s headquarters, running the first major product launch in years without impresario Steve Jobs as he tries to take Apple to still-loftier heights.”

“The iPhone 5 — expected to be faster, thinner and larger-screened — would arrive just in time for the crucial holiday shopping season,” Gupta reports. “Apple launches are some of the hottest events on the tech calendar, scrutinized by fans, investors, the media and industry insiders alike. Tuesday’s “Let’s talk iPhone” show, starting at 1 pm Eastern time, will mark Cook’s unofficial debut since taking over from co-founder Jobs in August.”

Gupta reports, “The new iPhone is also expected to come loaded with the updated iOS5 software that Apple unveiled in June. Some of the new features include improved notification functions and better Twitter integration. The iPhone — still the gold standard in the smartphone market — has been a huge success since it debuted in 2007, transforming it into one of the world’s leading consumer electronics powerhouses.”

    1. this comment of poster is definitely a moron! This is kind of people not coming to this site anymore should be! this is my advice

(If the guy wasn’t such a foul-mouthed idiot, I might have thought he was related to Yoda)

  2. LOL, you’ve got some serious social skill issues;).

The information is based on the code snippets found in IOS 5 for the iPhone and parts suppliers for the manufacturing of the iPhone.

    1. Dennis Miller ladies and gentlemen…..affiliated with any fundamentalist neo-conservative movements lately? Seen any deep ends you’d like to over recently? ….watched any primetime sports programs someone’s 10 times more suited for the job than you were in the lSt 24 hours?….

        1. You know, that sentiment is about on the same level as the #2 poster above with the four letter name. OTOH, it’s nice to know that I don’t have to pay any attention to your posts in the future. You’ve demonstrated the quality of your thinking.

      1. I was more referring to a 4S being an incremental upgrade to the 4 than a technological leap forward to the 5. But I don’t disagree with the tone of your post.

  3. There was wild speculation recently when Apple just covered their store windows to rearrange the interior. That was probably their wake-up call. Rumors and expectations were spiraling out of control ahead of special events, to the point that if they found a cure for cancer, everyone would be disappointed that they hadn’t colonized Mars.

I think Apple is leaking more information than they used to, to keep rumors on topic, and to control the damage from false rumors. In other words, Al Gore’s “slip” was not a slip.

    Rumors are more reliable now.

      1. I’m reminded of the urban legend that Al Gore claimed to have invented the internet. If he did, that would have been a lie. What he really claimed was that he took the initiative to make it what it is today. He sponsored a 1988 law that linked universities and libraries with a computer network, and a 1992 law that opened up it up for commercial use. (See Snopes) He played a key role in transforming the Arpanet, which was a DOD project, into the internet. Then Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML, and, well, here we are.

  4. Actually, this is not as crazy as it sounds. iPhone 5 NEEDS to be 4G capable. By all accounts, there are NO LTE chipsets that will give the desired battery life now, but there will be in a few months. On the other hand, Sprint 4G is somewhat old school, and the chipsets are in place already. The thinking is that Sprint paid 20B, they get their 4G RIGHT NOW. LTE people (ATT, Verizon) get their’s in the first quarter, after the low-power LTE chipsets come on line. So, Sprint doesn’t get exclusive 4G so much as the only 4G chipset available now is for Sprint. De facto 3 month exclusivity, while still holding out hope for the rest of the people.

I actually find it pretty convincing. However, all will be revealed in a couple of hours, so I don’t suppose it matters much.

  5. If Apple doesn’t release a true newly designed iPhone 5 there will be many dissapointed and pissed-off people, me included. All the rumors today are trying downplay the idea of a new iPhone 5. If Apple could not build a new phone with 4G after 16+ months of effort .. well, let’s say it will not be pretty!
