Analyst: Apple’s MacBook Air selling out in some locations

“Apple‘s new MacBook Air appears to have sold out in some locations, and may be the best selling Macintosh computer in many stores, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White wrote in a note to investors Monday,” Brian Caulfield reports for Forbes. “‘Our checks indicate demand for the new MacBook Air has been very strong thus far in the U.S. and we believe there have even been instances of temporary stock outs of certain models at some locations,’ White writes. ‘Overall, we sense a bit more of a preference for the higher-end 11-inch models but the 13-inch also seems to be popular.'”

Caulfield reports, “Two weeks ago, Apple stopped selling the white, plastic MacBook at retail and turned an updated version of its $999 MacBook Air into its entry-level notebook.”

MacDailyNews Take: We love our 11-inch MacBook Airs more than we’ve ever loved a Mac notebook.

  1. I would guest the lack of an optical drive is as radical as many thought. If they are selling very well, this could be a seismic shift. Apple moved USB to the mainstream and now could be moving the DVD out with the DoDo.

  2. I bought the i7 13″ a couple of days after its introduction through an Apple store in Dallas. One store had already sold out of that model.

The 13″ Air is light and FAST. The double speed boost of SSD and i7 is a huge upgrade over my early 2006 15″ MBPro CoreDuo. I considered the 11″ for a few minutes, but I really needed the screen real estate since this is my only computer.

    1. The 11″ MBA are for chicks and fashion victims. I’ve got an animosity towards screens that squeeze text into a size smaller than an ant’s bum. The minimum I’d consider is 13″.

      1. … would PREFER an 11″ over a 13″, or why, but I’m not one of them. In fact, I’d be happier with a 14″! But, I can get by with the 13″ screen … with enough scrolling.

      2. I think you are going to need to get your eyes sharpened 😉 because the era of hyper-density displays (pixels per inch) is upon us. However I feel your pain, my new cinema (27″@2560X1440) has caused me to need to wear reading glasses almost constantly while working (something I never did with the 30″, though admittedly, I do like the extra resolution as It lets me display a full 2K film image at 1:1 inside an editing or compositing program).
The 11″ air IS high (just above 130 PPI I think), but no higher than an iPad and not so far off the new “hyper resolution” displays like the new cinema (which one could argue are actually more squeezed because you sit back further from a 27″ desktop display.)

  3. Ordered the 13 inch. Own the latest highest-end quad core MBP, but it is just too heavy. That the MBA has the same display resolution as the base 15 inch MBA helped to sell me. Trying to figure out what to do with the MBP.
