Next-gen iPhone coming in September? iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S?

“Dust off the urban camping gear — the next iteration of the iPhone is reportedly on track for a September launch,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

“Supply chain sources are telling the occasionally accurate DigiTimes that Pegatron Technology has received orders to build 15 million iPhone 5/iPhone 4S handsets as the device’s presumed fall launch nears,” Paczkowski reports. “As others have reported before, DigiTimes claims that the iPhone 5 will not be major update from iPhone 4.”

Paczkowski reports, “In design, it will feature only slight modifications from its predecessor; the real improvements will be found under the hood. There we can expect to find the faster A5 processor on which the iPad 2 runs, a Qualcomm dual mode GSM/CDMA baseband and a higher resolution 8 megapixel rear camera.”

    1. I do not think it will be called “iPhone 4S,” no matter what type of improvements it has inside.

The iPhone 3G lead to iPhone 3GS because the “3G” stood for something other then the “generation” of the phone. It stood for the wireless technology being used.

The “4” in iPhone 4 does describes the generation of the phone. It’s the 4th generation (which counts the iPhone 3G and 3GS as two separate generations). The next iPhone revision will be the 5th generation. Therefore, it is “iPhone 5,” or possibly a name that does not use the generation number.

      1. 🙂 What most people do not seem to comprehend is that most customers of the next iPhone (whatever it is called) will be upgrading from the iPhone 3GS, or they will be new to iPhone. Very few will be current iPhone 4 owners, because they are still in the middle of their two-year contracts.

iPhone 3GS owners have two-year contracts that just started to expire a few weeks ago. Even if the next iPhone was the SAME as iPhone 4, they would be eager to buy it, because even an iPhone 4 is a huge leap beyond iPhone 3gs. NOW, imagine an iPhone 4 powered by an A5…

        1. exactly.
September puts me at like 15-16 months give or take.
with the normal AT&T upgrade process, we *could* upgrade at 18 months with no fees… but, who knows if AT&T will be jerks or play nice.

I won’t leave AT&T.. My unlimited data is mine!

  1. How about more than one fsckin iPhone? Give us one with a bigger screen and keep the other at 3.5 inches for women and nancies who can’t handle anything larger.

This game is getting tired. Apple can’t keep up with Android with this one new phone, one weak OS update per year crap.

    1. “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”
Comes to mind. Android keeps dumping their crap out there for free… And buy one get 74 free deals. People grab free crap they don’t need, only some understand that “free” ends up being junk..

Apple just releases a new iPhone.
The iOS 5 update is huge, I can’t wait for it.

    2. LOL…..”nancies…..” never heard that before…a euro bud of mine just told me it’s a lower class slang thing…………..
i’m so ready for under the hood work and a jump to verizon, we’re doing a film in europe in october and had hoped to be able to use it there with a local sim card…not sure if that’ll work, i think it needs minimum 900 – 1800 MHz, best 2100MHz

        1. I’m American and I disagree. This comes much closer to the definition I know:

n): Mocking term for a man engaging in feminine activities or otherwise compromising his masculinity.

As a matter of fact if you were a golfer and lagged a putt well short of the hole, one of your foursome buddies would have undoubtedly said, “Nice stroke Nancy!”

        2. first off #2 does..
2nd, urban dictionary changes all the time. why? cause it’s user input.
          and not exactly accurate.

there are terms there that people claim were invented/first used and mean one thing. yet if you go back about 10 years prior… you’ll find someone actually wrote a song and invented the word. but they didn’t give them credit cause that generation didn’t come there and put that word in first.. took years to get the correct term out there.

or you could have just selected Nancy-Boy from the side menu…

Or you could have let the topic die, it doesn’t add to the article at all.

        3. You’re not exactly on topic either, I find it interesting you would admonish someone for the very same thing. And when I am addressed, I reply in a respectful manner.

Regardless of the accuracy of anything on the internet, #2 describes an effeminate heterosexual, not a homosexual. In further research, it appears Nancy can be used as a gay reference, or it can be used to describe a hetero male lacking masculine powers…Nancy-boy appears to be a related term but not exactly the same.

    3. You want bigger? You want multiple phones? You want frequent updates?

Have we got a crappy Android phone for you.

Just for you, BOGO as well. One phone to jailbreak and totaliy screw up with malware and another one to shove where the sun don’t shine.

    4. A bigger screen is just an “excuse” (disguised as a feature) by the iPhone competition, who cannot miniaturize as expertly as Apple. If you use a bigger screen, there is more volume behind it for the components and lazy design.

        1. The iPhone itself is just about the perfect size (and thickness and weight) right now, for most existing and potential customers. A larger screen would be fine, but it can’t get too much larger without making the phone noticeably bigger and heavier (including the need for a larger battery to power the larger screen).

Maybe 1/2 inch more to get it to 4 inches would not perceptibly alter the overall size and weight, but that’s not much of a change. And if the change is small, do you actually create a new resolution standard and fragment the platform, or spread out the pixels a bit to make the screen a bit less “retina”? I’d just keep the current display, until it’s time for the next BIG change. In any case, Apple is NOT making a major change to the the standard iPhone display just one year after making a HUGE change with the Retina Display.

If Apple was the type of company that put out a few dozen different variations, to try to satisfy every niche, there would already be iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches at various screen sizes, including some with slide-out keyboards. There would also be a “headless” Mac desktop that is equivalent in performance to iMac. And hybrid iPad/Mac devices (laptops with touch screens). But thankfully, Apple is NOT that type of (say YES to everything) company.

        2. I’m with you. iPhone 4 is damn near perfect size.

I have held a 4″ droid. Felt like i had a smaller iPad in my hands… and i want to put that in my pocket?…

Also saw someone with a 7″ tablet, almost felt sorry for the guy.

R2 is an adroid fanboi. reading his comments he is either trolling, or he just does not like apple.

        3. No, I like Apple. I use Apple products, including the iPad I type most of my posts on here from.

I’m simply not a drooling, sycophantic member of the RDF cult who refuses to question the company and makes excuses for their shortcomings and plain boneheaded mistakes, like the way they screwed up the iPod shuffle a generation ago.

How goddamn stupid is it that anybody who doesn’t tote the Apple fanboy line is automatically an “Android fanboi.” What the fsck, I never said one word in support of Android on here.

        4. I already have an iPhone with a bigger screen — it’s called an iPad 2 🙂
Now all I need is a great phone to replace my 3GS. Bigger isn’t better in this case.

    1. It just works now. I hope they don’t change the design at all, unless it’s to make a bigger screen or thinner.

      On my wish list:
      64GB model
      A5
      GSM/CDMA Universal
      Bigger screen
      Improved durability
      Better camera
      IR Transmitter
      NFC

Any *one* of those, and I’m in.

  2. I wouldn’t be surprised with a “4S” monicker. There is precedent for this nomenclature if the upgrades are as described and there is no real change to the look and feel of the phone. To wit: my iPhone 3GS. I’m ready and looking forward to upgrading; it is now officially 2+ years old.

  3. The name really doesn’t matter. However Apple did add the S moniker when they upgraded the 3G to 3GS. The increase in processor speed made a big difference in performance.
    My wish list is:
    64GB
    A5 processor
    Bigger screen
    Better battery

Like many, the 3GS is my current phone. Ready for an upgrade.

  4. With “smartphones”, I always wanted them to be small and handy, to still fit the “smart” aspect, which is why I personally wouldn’t love a bigger screen. As for the design, I would like it to be a bit thinner..
I do not own an iPhone yet (more of a mac guy) but will definitely wait for the update to get in it.
*And btw, I like R2’s comments. Apple-fans tend to lose their sense of criticism concerning the company.
