iPhone announcement bogs down Verizon Wireless Web site

The Verizon Wireless Web site “slowed noticeably just as Verizon executives said at a press conference in New York that they would begin offering the iPhone next month. Hordes of people apparently tried to access the site to get details,” Verne G. Kopytoff reports for The New York Times.

“The site, which usually downloads in around 3.5 seconds, took nearly twice as long to appear, according to Keynote Systems, a mobile and Internet monitoring firm. The slowdown lasted up to 30 minutes, starting at around 12:05 pm,” Kopytoff reports. “‘There wasn’t any significant outage; it just slowed down,’ said Shawn White, senior director of external operations for Keynote.”

Kopytoff wonders, “Who knows whether Verizon’s Web site slowdown is a precursor of things to come?”
