“Nintendo today said its executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway was leaving the company in a possible sign of a shakeup following its struggling game business and competition with Apple,” iPodNN reports. “The veteran will exit as of October 1 and plans to take a position outside of the game industry. Nintendo hasn’t named an immediate successor.”

“Nintendo’s sales have been dropping this year; the DS was especially hard-hit as its sales have almost dropped by half from year to year,” iPodNN reports. “It has tried to fuel sales by bundling the Wii with more features but hasn’t had much success.”
iPodNN reports, “Publicly, Nintendo has been hesitant to pin the decline on a particular cause, but it’s widely believed the company views Apple as a threat and has been suffering the most from competition with the iPod touch and iPhone. Apple has been drawing revenue share away from both the DS and Sony’s PSP and, according to Apple, is larger in terms of device volume than the DS and PSP combined.”

What’s the word? Oh yeah! BLOODBATH!
The domino effect kicks in.
One-Trick-Ponies, like portable gaming toys, are a thing of the past.
Nintendo should rewrite all their best-selling games for iOS.
They may learn a few things.
They’ll probably make some money, too.
That’s pretty funny. Fire the sales guy. It’s obviously his fault Nintendo doesn’t have anything that competes against the iPod touch.
I really like the DS as a handheld gaming platform and the Wii for the casual gamer, but I think both are getting a bit long in the tooth.
Unfortunately, 3-D isn’t going to help IMO
Multi-function portable devices – done right – seem to be the Tsunami against dedicated consumer digital cameras and game devices. Apple is well positioned for this disruptive competition and well is chiefly responsible for it. And no one writes better software than Apple, even if they ain’t perfect, and software is the key, not the slopware we’ve previously seen from cell phone, portable audio and misc. device companies. I pity the fools.
Wii was cool and it still is for games that you can’t get elsewhere such as Mario and sonic and others. It’s a great family system and I know almost every retirement home place here uses the wii. They have bowling tournaments and other sports games to keep the residents active.
The ds is ok but if nintendo was smart port the games to the ios devices. That would make them all available to many people who don’t have a ds.
But I think with the appletv if all goes like some say it could be the next gaming device. Although there will always be a market for the consoles as the hard core gamers.
But they need to update more often. All current game consoles have been out for years.
I hope Microsoft doesn’t fire the sales guy.
Dunawaywith!

C’mon Nintendo. Get your engineers up with the program.
BTW has anyone heard anyone mention Sony PSP? Ever?
Oh sure, don’t blame the product, blame the salesman.
Steve Ballmer feels for you. Everyone blames him for Windows when we all know it’s the asshole in charge who is responsible, not the salesman.
I can hear it now, the whooping klaxons, the screams the splashes of bodies hitting the water….
I’m pretty sure she left of her own accord and this has nothing to do with Apple. The media loves to speculate and invent things that make headlines.
Good one BizLaw!

Everything that happens in the boardrooms are not because of the iPod effect. Dedicated systems like the Wii and DS are in a different area than iOS devices. Every played Resident Evil on the Wii, then played on the iPhone. Big difference. The DS is great for Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Pokemon, countless FF remakes, The World Ends With You, Custom Robo, Mario anything, Starfox, Zelda and the whatnots but there are very few triple A titles on the iOS when it comes to games. That is why they can’t sell many above 13 bucks. There are only a handful of AAA games: Hero of Sparta 2, Real Racing, Grand Theft Auto, and that game by Squareenix, you know what role playing game I am talking about, but the rest is just a game that can get a quick buck out of you. It will be in your collection and then you won’t play it for a long time. One day you will notice it and then just delete it off of your iDevice. It’s a hard pill to swallow but that is the truth. By the way I own a DS, Wii, iPad, and iPhone. I play the DS for casual games and some iOS games, but there aren’t any that I would honestly pay 29.99 for. On the other hand Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Slug 7, Kirby Superstar, New Super Mario Bros, Legend of Starfy, and Pokemon are day one purchases, no BS waiting for a price drop like most App store purchasers.
Where was the “iPod effect” when the DS was enjoying record sales?
The sales (and profit) has dropped recently because a new model was announced and the Yen is strong, end of story.
