“Apple is moving to become its own network, harnessing the power of the Internet. Apple’s FaceTime is part of this move,” Jonny Evans blogs for Computerworld.

“FaceTime lets you call other FaceTime users for free. All you need is for them to be on a compatible device and in your contacts book,” Evans explains. “No set-up is required to use FaceTime as it only requires a person’s phone number. One can switch from a regular phone call to a FaceTime call by tapping the FaceTime button on the call screen.”
“Jobs intends introducing FaceTime deals with the carriers next year. Jobs has also previously said Apple intends releasing its video-calling technology as a standard. This means it is only a question of time until we see the debut of: FaceTime for Android mobiles… Windows… Nokia… [and] BlackBerry.”
“With a double-dip recession almost sure to grip us in its grasp, I can’t help but think FaceTime will become exceedingly popular exceedingly fast. We’ll migrate to using it instead of making conventional calls,” Evans writes. “Next year when we get the chance to make these calls using 3G, we’ll see another surge in FaceTime use.”
Evans writes, “Ultimately the carrier networks will wake up to discover they have become nothing more than mobile ISP’s charged with keeping the network alive.”

Facetime is great… just tried it out yesterday from Starbucks. Worked like a charm!
I liked his writing for MacWorld UK, but I didn’t know he was an economist as well. Biting off more that one can chew maybe?
That will be a good thing- I think. Then again, what will they be charging use to use the mobile service and how will it handle the load?
Dumb pipes are also like dumb water agencys. They have the pipes and the power to control pricing of their product. I hate to have them to become the power to provide.
Just like pricing of cell service today. You really have few choices and price is typically balanced with all carriers. You only have to choose your evil.

Wow! Evans is a financial analyst too. Pretty bold statement backed up by nothing.
I think Apple would be wise to have their own actual physical network.
As ISPs and cell carriers look to choke off bandwidth as users consume more, it will kill all these new cool things like video on demand and facetime.
A physical Apple network would kill the telcos, ISPs and cable companies in one giant swoop.
Hello?! Now it’s starting to be obvious and register…
I skimmed that so quickly that I flew right past the double dip recession part.
Utter bullshit.
When FaceTime catches full force it will be HUGE!
Vote Conservative across the board.
Not Bush-type RINOs!!! (Republicans In Name Only)
Cut government waste, hold the line on taxes. Get the country back to work (for real businesses, not the government)!
Conservative economic principles can save the USA.
Anybody know how it works with an iPod touch, like if the person doesn’t have a phone number? My girlfriend wants to get one.
@ VSC
Sorry, I only vote for gay conservatives. Lucky for you, most of them secretly are.
There are plenty of great uses for FaceTime. However, I don’t doubt for a moment that the technology will take up no more than 5% of person-to-person communication, the rest being traditional phone calls. Most of the time, there is simply no special need to look at the person’s face when talking to them.
Still, FaceTime is an excellent catalyst for Apple’s mobile strategy. Where iChat failed (compared to Skype), FaceTime has a chance to succeed, as long as it becomes technologically simple.
iChat’s primary obstacles to the widespread adoption are its requirement for many open ports on the firewall, as well as the outrageously crappy Windows client (the AIM — most atrocious piece of software every created). If Apple decided to integrate FaceTime into iChat, it would really be much better if they took some time to develop a stand-alone Windows client software as well, rather than letting AOL add FaceTime functionality to that AIM monstrosity. On the other hand, since the protocol is becoming publicly available, there is a chance someone else may decide to develop the client (or to add FaceTime feature to an existing software, such as Skype, or Yahoo messenger, or something similar). Either way, as long as tech requirements are not as onerous as iChat (all those ports), and Windows has a decent client (unlike AIM), FaceTime has a great future.
HAHAHAHA… Funny how that post changed, huh Mr. Straight.

MDN chums the water for a good political fight, perhaps?
CAUGHT YOU!!!!
I really wonder how can FaceTime calling make ANY difference with respect to a possible double-dip recession? Can any financial expert explain to me the connection between the two?
… I didn’t realize you were in that economic niche earning over $250,000 a year. Nice of you to slum with us less-wealthy folk. Thanks for attempting to differentiate yourself from the previous administration. I think I’d have been a Republican in my youth (50s and 60s) but they have changed, as have I. We agree that we should a) cut government waste and b) get the country back to work. Good starting points. Now … how?
FaceTime is a challenge to the owners of the “pipes” that will feed it. Apple needs to find a way around their grip on delivery.

@ChrissyOne
There’s a FaceTime app on the iPod touch. You just set it up with your Apple ID. The email address associated with your friend’s Apple ID will need to be in your contacts in order to FaceTime her. On top of your email address linked to your Apple ID, you can add email addresses that you want people to FaceTime you on. They’ll need to be verified.
Once it’s all set up, it works like a charm!
Facetime will be huge with the kids.. And today’s kids are tomorrow’s customers.
Disclosure: AAPL very long..

Thanks for the info!
Facetime will finally push Video conferencing where it should be, at the very front of the line. When I got my company video conferencing, it has saved us a TON of money on travel and on meetings. Face time has been great for one on one meetings as i can interact with my client on a better level than just a phone call.
sorry for those who don’t believe in the second recession is coming, it’s already started, I hope you have your money saved up. i happen to be in that niche that makes over $250k. Don’t bitch about how much I make, you don’t know of the trials and tribulations on how I got to where I am now, but don’t worry I’ll foot the bill so you can rely on the government to support rather than the strength of back and sweat off your brow, and the power of you mind to stand on your own two feet. Just remember you’re not entitled to anything, I had to learn that in my 20’s when i was living in my car. I’d rather give my money to charity than the wasteful government no matter who is office. I vote for who ever wants less from and let’s me give back with less strings attached.
