Next-gen Apple Macbook Pro models on the way?

New iPod nano - NOW shoots video. “I decided to buy a new MacBook Pro this month, but I changed my mind at the last minute. And I’m glad I did. It’s looking like Apple is getting ready to release the next generation pretty soon,” Mitch Wagner reports for Computerworld.

“The rumors are starting to trickle out on Apple blogs. AppleInsider says that Best Buy is expecting new Apple hardware in March,” Wagner reports. “New MacBook Pros will likely use Intel’s new mobile processors.”

“I’ll decide whether to buy a MacBook Pro when I see what Apple offers in its next generation,” Wagner reports. “I expect to buy an iPad when they become available next month. Maybe two; my wife is eyeing them hungrily. And I also expect Apple will come out with a new iPhone this summer, as they’ve done for the last three summers; and when they do, I’ll upgrade my iPhone too. So even if I don’t get a new MacBook Pro, Apple’s going to be getting a lot of my family’s money this year.”

  1. Hope they are cheaper. If Apple’s prices stay the same, when my macbook finally dies, I’ll have no choice but to buy a cheaper machine i.e. not a mac ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”downer” style=”border:0;” />

So, for the little difference, if any, in price, are you suggesting that all the software you’ll also have to replace is free?

  3. They are just updating the processors if anything. Not going to be any form-factor changes. It’s just if you want the latest intel i series chips. Still worth the wait IMHO, but not a “next generation” change. Simply a refresh.

    I call bullshit!

the one u have now had the same price issues when u bought it, as the new ones will.

“the bitter taste of poor quality, outlast the sweetness of low price”

  5. A revised MacBook Pro has been in my buying plans for some time. But I’m interested in SSDs as well as i7 CPUs. I hope they are getting faster, bigger and cheaper.

I hadn’t really expected the iPad to come along, so I suppose I need to revise my future purchase intentions.

  6. Journalism based some some other journalist’s rumors?

MDN, you can do better than this. This article should have been ignored; you covered another article yesterday that was more detailed.

    This is history, not news.

  7. This is my year for updates too.

I will be getting an iPad. Even though it doesn’t have a camera, which will keep me from using some apps I was counting on (Theodolite, Sun Seeker, and some GPS apps) I am bumming because I have to get the cell version just to get GPS, but there are too many plusses to this device to pass it up.

I need an upgraded MacBook Pro, but am thinking about an iMac, waiting to see what is coming……

I could also use an iPod Touch, if the new ones have a GPS unit and a camera so I can use some specific apps that require both (See above), and would save me the expense and trouble of carrying multiple devices in the field.

An iPhone may be an alternate to the iPod Touch, if it comes out on Verizon (AT&T;doesn’t work for me where I am)

Yes, Apple could end up with a lot of my money this year….

  8. I hope that they are just a processor upgrade. The present form factor in the unibody is absolutely the best they have ever had. I think I’ve owned about 10 generations of mac portables starting with the powerbook duo, but they have hit close to perfection with the unibodys.

Not sure how you treat your laptops but my MacBook Pro is 2 years old and looks like new. My old PowerBook G4 is 5 years old, looks like new and runs great. My old PowerBook G3 (Firewire) is 9 years old, looks like new and still works great.

My old PowerBook 1400cs is 13 years old, looks like new and last time I tried, it powered up and ran. Back in 2006 had a customer find an old Mac IIci in storage and had to retrieve files from the hard drive for a court case. Used the PowerBook 1400cs of mine to network ethernet from the Mac IIci to it. Copied the entire drive over. I then networked the PowerBook 1400cs to my current PowerBook G4 and moved the data to it. (The Mac IIci was to old to copy directly to the modern Mac)
Glad I hung on to it. Back in storage it goes.

If you treat laptops with care, they will last many, many years. In my business I take care of Macs and it just kills me how some users just beat their laptops up. Then they wonder why the die in 1 year.

  10. iWish Apple would start sharing some of the cash hoard with us owners. Then I’d be even happier to plow more money into more Apple devices. As it stands my share gains more than cover any new Apple gear but to protect future gains I never sell. So I’m still stuck having to earn all these wonderful new tools and toys. Oh iDream.

As long Apple feels they need the cash for security I’m OK with it. However 40 billion and growing 3-5 billion per quarter would seem to exceed corporate needs.

  11. Agree with Monger… 1/2 gen. But they always throw in some things that are never revealed initially. Most of all I hope they change the vendor for the hard drives and also revamp a little of the OS with constant permission issues.

  12. For what it’s worth, Apple is one of very few laptop manufacturers without an i3 model announced. The i3 chip, if I understand it correctly, is a dual core chip with some family resemblance to the i7 that is in the new top-of-the-line iMacs. It is a “mobile” chip, cooler and less power-hungry than the i5 – also in the next-to-the-top-of-the-line iMacs. Uses the same socket, I believe, so it could qualify as a “speed bump” or an update as opposed to a “new gen”.

  13. I’m happy with my MBP. Got it in December. It is very fast. I don’t think apple will put an i7 in a MBP. That chip runs hot and draws mucho power. Maybe an i3. Just another guess.
