RIM’s BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac now available

Research In Motion has developed a new version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software specifically for Mac users. The new desktop software is now available for free download.

The new BlackBerry Desktop Manager software allows Mac users to smoothly and seamlessly sync data from Mac applications like iCal, Address Book, Microsoft Entourage and others, as well as add and remove applications, schedule automatic backups, encrypt backup files and install software updates for their BlackBerry smartphone.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software also integrates BlackBerry Media Sync, enabling Mac users to sync their iTunes music collections with their BlackBerry smartphone (certain music files may not be supported, including files that contain digital rights management technologies). From within the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, users simply select the desired iTunes playlists and the music, including song information and album art, is quickly transferred onto their BlackBerry smartphone.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager software is designed to run on Mac OS 10.5.5 and higher, requires iTunes 7.2 and higher, and supports BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher.

  1. I’m a bit surprised MDN didn’t add a Take to rub this in Palm’s faces again. BlackBerry Media Sync is one of the strongest counter-arguments to the Palm-pushed “Apple’s iTunes is too closed” meme going around lately.

  2. To little to late. Everyone that uses a Mac I know switched to the iPhone already and even most of the people I know that use Windoz has switched to the iPhone. The only people that I know that aren’t using an iPhone own and use dumb feature phones or really dumb talk only phones. I’d estimate that 99% of the people I know that don’t have an iPhone already, because they use a dumb phone, want an iPhone and most are planning to buy one within 6 months or less.

  3. I am so happy that they finally released this software. I use a blackberry because ATT is so horrible where I work. I would love to have an iPhone but at the present time a blackberry is my best option.

consider that all the people you know may not be representative of “all the people.” For example, I know many people who cannot get an iPhone within their employer’s contract because of long-standing contracts with other providers. For example, my employer has a contract with Verizon, and Blackberry is the best option we have (had a Palm Treo before this… problematic as hell).
My employer’s opinion, which some may not agree with but is reasonable, is that at this point, it’s likely Apple will soon be able to break away from AT&T;exclusivity, and that’s easier to wait for than switching everyone to AT&T;. I was hoping that would have been last June. For the time being, I’m stuck with BB, so I am glad I have recognition from RIM, even at this late date.
