Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard education price is $69

For students, Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard “will still be available for a deeper discount at school bookstores (usually around $69),” Scott McNulty reports for TUAW.

But, not online at the Apple Store, where the price will be US$116.

“The most obvious reason for this move is that Apple has no real way of knowing if you are, in fact, associated with an educational institution when you order online,” McNulty reports. “Most school bookstores require you to produce a school ID in order to make purchases of academically priced software, so Apple can be assured that you are, in fact, a poor student and not just cheap.”

MacDailyNews Take: First DRM-free iTunes Plus songs drop to 99-cents, then we find out that the iPhone will get its SDK, and now this! What’s next, matte screen options for iMacs? Final Cut Express renamed iMovie ’08 and sold for US$15.80? Steve Jobs putting five Golden Tickets hidden in iPod packages promising entry to One Infinite Loop’s secret subterranean labs? Even without those last three things, the Apple whiners and complainers are having one helluva bad week.

  1. 587 new reviews, by people who purchased iLife 08, and have a .Mac account. Not trolls, not MS astroturfers, but actual Apple customers.

The number of reviews does not increase much because Apple keeps rotating off reviewers hoping that the count will turn positive. It wont. The current length a review stays on the Apple store concerning iLife 08 is less than a week.

If anyone would care to look, you’ll see that the majority of the negative comments toward iLife 08 stem from strong negative reaction to the dumbing down of iMovie. The rest of the iLife 08 suite scores well with customer satisfaction.

Any reasonable person will look at iMovie 08, and compare it to iMovie HD and see that it is a serious loss in features.

Arguments to the contrary, claims of it costing $15.80, and other musings are specious at best. Name calling people who point out the negative consequenses of the retrograde product just goes to prove that opinion on Apple products from this site needs to be carefully considered and not taken at face value.

The simple fact is that the current iMovie 08 is a drag on sales of iLife 08, and a poor reflection on how Apple treated this product and it’s customers.

From MDN’s take, in case you didn’t read it.

“Final Cut Express renamed iMovie ’08 and sold for US$15.80? Steve Jobs putting five Golden Tickets hidden in iPod packages promising entry to One Infinite Loop’s secret subterranean labs? Even without those last three things, the Apple whiners and complainers are having one helluva bad week.”

  3. This is one of the reasons I’m glad I work at a university that has an actual computer store on campus! Can’t wait.

And the campus store keeps track of what you buy because the University really does have an agreement with Apple that allows you to only purchase one of any particular software item. Ever. Helps keep people from buying 15-20 copies of iThis or iThat the first day it’s released and re-selling it on eBay…

Oh, and hardware? You can buy a new Mac and get the education discount every 12 months, if you wish.

  4. That’s not a bad price. People can be so tetchy these days! ‘I want what I want right this second or I’ll never buy anything from your company again!’ There’s a lesson in patience, children.

    1. First DRM-free iTunes Plus songs drop to 99-cents.
Yes, So iTunes pricing can be seen as remaining competitive after Amazon delt them the blow of offering DRM free music for less.

    2. Shen we find out that the iPhone will get its SDK

Again, so that Apple may remain competitive with the corporate customer with the likes of RIM in providing developers the ability to develop NECESSARY mobile business solutions.

    3. …And now this!

Umm, and now what? Education pricing has been $69 for ALL of Apple’s OSX releases.

iMovie 08/Final cut express. Ha ha.. Nice try Steve Jack.

  6. OK but what if you show your Academic transript at the applestore with current dates and enrollment/ and u’re ID. Would they give you the price drop there with that info?

If so, how about purchasing multiple copies at that price, or is it for 1 purchase only?

  7. Wow, I guess that I am lucky that I am in a single class this semester for a specific thing – otherwise I wouldn’t have been a student. I hope my rinky dink community college has it on the shelf soon after release.

  8. I’m in my last year at Columbia College Chicago and I’m sure gonna miss the discounts. I recently got Logic Studio Acedemic for $149. Even though it’s not upgradeable, it’ll be years until their next release. Money well spent.

  9. For Dark Side of the Moon:

I recently ordered iWork and iLife ’08. I was told that we could either order the individual education pack, or else the family pack — but no education family pack. I assume it’s a general policy, so don’t expect Leopard in educational family pack. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”confused” style=”border:0;” />

  10. I can purchase Apple hardware online with an education discount, so why not software as well? It is ridiculous that Apple would require one to verify their education bona fides at a university retailer before purchasing a discounted OX S when you can purchase discounted Apple hardware directly online by simply pressing a button “confirming” eligibility.

Besides, not all campuses have Apple stores on site. Are you implying, McNutty, that these students and faculty are screwed?

  11. All the pissers and moaners at MDN constantly whining about other pissers and moaners really gives me a chuckle. Thanks guys!

Oh, and thanks Allan, for one of the few constructive posts on here tonight regarding JourneyEd.com.

  12. What a big pile!!! I’ve been buying online from Apple with my education discount for years. In order to get the account you have to prove you work for an educational institution. I ordered Leopard online because I’m using my $100 iPhone rebate. But saying that the price is higher online because they can’t prove you work in the education field is crap!

  13. Way to stick it to ’em, MDN. I too am glad that the whiners have been shut up. BTW, whining is not “holding Apple to a higher standard” thing. Geez, what a bunch of self-justifying gnat-swallowing navel-gazing tiny men. And the saddest thing is that you’re completely unaware how small you look and how despised your actions are. Blindness, thy name is “Mac whiner”.
