Beleaguered Motorola preps ‘media monster’ iPhone killer

“Motorola Inc. is set to unveil a mobile phone with full-motion video display and the means to play feature films on small removable storage cards, Chief Executive Ed Zander said on Wednesday,” Eric Auchard reports for Reuters.

MacDailyNews Take: Ooh, full-motion video! Amazing. On small removable storage cards, no less. How Sony-esque. Must be some sort Motorola of tribute to the ’90’s.

Auchard continues, “Speaking at the Software 2007 conference in Silicon Valley, Zander briefly described one of the several devices the world’s second-largest mobile phone maker has said it plans to announce at an event next Tuesday. ‘We are going to show a device next week,’ Zander told several hundred attendees of the business software conference, saying it would show 30 frames-a-second, full-motion video. ‘It is a media monster.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Wow, 30 frames-a-second video on a media monster? Stunning. Ed Zander gives Real’s Rob “Never Met a Doughnut I Didn’t Like” Glaser and Microsoft’s Steve “Brainwash My Kids and Elderly Uncles Not to Use Apple Products” Ballmer a run for their money in the “World’s Worst Tech CEO” race.

Auchard continues, “The new device would initially be targeted at the European market… ‘We are working with another company to deliver movies on SD cards. You can start watching unbelievable quality movies,’ Zander enthused.”

  1. Oh Gawd another company about to go belly up. Why is everyone out to kill Apple. I thought they were small and insignificant, and no threat to anyone. Apparently I am wrong.

Go Apple go go go go

  2. Pardon me. Since when is Motorola beleagured?
The reason why the “media monster” is headed to Europe is because they actually have the world’s most advanced mobille 3G network……Sorry iPhone…AT&T doesn’t have such a network, they just like to advertise that they do (while playing European made Oasis tunes in the background).

Oh and just wipe the dripping Kool Aid off your chin and get this….There is no deal with CIngular….Cingular went the way of Bellsouth…That’s right Apple made a deal with the 2nd incarnation of Ma Bell (my Bellsouth bills have the AT&T logo now and all that healthy consolidation..brought up my bill too!!!). That business bohemoth, that was so monopolistic, and provided such bad service that when the government broke them up the first time…it created the dynamic telecommunications market that we have now. That will make for a very ironic businesss coupling. On the one hand you have a Apple, a creative, dynamic resourceful company…on the other Ma Bell…slow moving, monopolistic, and no interest (or need) to provide good service.

My prediction: The first product change to iPhone will be the ability not to depend on Ma Bell.

    Just my $0.02

P.S. Just ask the old timers how much fun it was dealing with Ma Bell type companies and ISDN lines. The internet would have never made it into our homes in the way it did if the U.S. gov’t hadn’t broken up AT&T the first time…no Vonage…no Skype..either.

  3. God you MDN fanboys are lame. Soon as someone announces a product that will compete with the iPhone you squawk like monkeys. Your “Motorola will die” comments are no better than M$ pretending Zune would kill the iPod. Grow up and accept that Apple isn’t perfect and all other companies are not crap because they’re not Apple.

  4. Don’t mistake the service of the old land line AT&T (“Ma Bell”) and the offspring resulting from it’s breakup (“Baby Bells”) with the WIRELESS carriers of today. Some wireless carriers have similar names, like Verizon and Verizon Wireless, but are in fact different companies. The history of AT&T/Cingular is a bit more complicated with many mergers and acquisitions forming the current company:

  5. “We are going to show a device next week”

Oh, so you’re planning to show a product next week that you plan to release at some point in the future, that you plan to have some other company design video capability for… you’ll pardon the lack of excitement here, I’m sure.

  6. Record & film executives STUPID!

Those sticks Will be sold @$29.99 or however much DVD films are sold at now complete with DRM

After all how will you download the films onto these cards? If you do it online, you will end up spending as much on calls as on the cost of the film….

Were do these people get their thoughts from?

  7. C1 and Newton, I use a phillips DECT 225, It has a clear range of upto 15 feet. I take it outside and have very clear reception even with dorrs and windows shut. Includes an intergrated answer phone on a chip and an extra three handsets all with individual charging stations. You can use the handsets like a walkie talkie.

2 Years and haven’t had to change the batteries.

Still…. You have to try all sytems out first before buying.
