Apple brewing ‘Perfect Storm’ of Mac sales?

“PC users don’t really get the Mac and have never gotten the Mac. Since most of the world talks Windows, it’s no surprise that few in the industry really appreciate the windfall that’s in store for Apple Computer over the next 18 months,” David Morgenstern writes for eWeek.

Morgenstern writes, “The big deal for Mac users will be upgrades, primarily meaning the transition of the installed base of Mac users to the Intel-based machines. The first sign of the pent-up demand for newer, faster Macs can be seen in Apple’s latest quarterly results. The sales of some 800,000 notebooks—almost all the high-priced spread—represents a 61 percent increase from the year-ago quarter. With our internal clocks it feels as if it all must have happened by now. But it’s only just beginning. For example, Apple’s super-loyal base of professional content creators haven’t yet received their Intel machines. However, this cycle isn’t your usual processor upgrade cycle that comes every time Intel or Advanced Micro Devices tweaks a process. This is a major shift that affects all parts of the Mac customer-developer-vendor ecology.”

“This coming Intel transition may prove to be a triple high biorhythm for the Mac. Along with the new Intel models, the Mac market will be bolstered early in 2007 by the arrival of Mac OS X “Leopard” (v10.5) and later in the spring with Intel-compatible versions of major Mac software platforms, such as the Adobe Creative Suite 3 products,” Morgenstern writes.

“Wild cards in the Intel transition mix are ‘switchers,’ the customers persuaded by the demonstrations of content creation in the Apple stores. Will this trend with Windows users switching to Mac continue after the arrival of Windows Vista and its prettier face? Maybe,” Morgenstern writes. “With Vista missing the holiday and back-to-school seasons, many customers are buying Macs. A family in my neighborhood has been all PC since the PC XT. But the eldest son is going off to college and says he wants a Mac. It’s the vanguard of a new generation gap. He’s never owned a Mac but he’s gotta have one—a good sign for Apple.”

  1. attn: Mac sales = who cares

OSX will chew you up and spit you out.

your windows using days will be ruined for life – trust me once youve driven a levitating hovercar from another planet you WONT want to go back to driving your ford.!

I dare all you biased idiots that think we’re biased to try osx for a while.

oh, and people use windows because they are?
    a. afraid
    b. lazy
    c. sheep
    d. all of the above

    answer: d

Your response to the article puts an exclamation point on what the writer was saying, are ARE the guy he is talking about… did you even read the article? Windows using douche bags.

  2. nice title, but the article on the whole was actually rather lame, poorly researched, and not very conclusive about anything. Mostly it seemed written to get hits….worked, I guess. I’ve written better articles about Apple than that!

    mw: interest, as in NOT

  3. I think I am going to buy a Ford because everyone else (at least used to) buy one. After all I can shop around and buy any number of add ons to make it look more like a sports car. Though now that I have done just that it just looks like a Ford with rather a lot of go faster stripes. Mind you no one can say its cheap now eh, well financially anyway.

  4. C>config.sys
    etc. etc. etc.

That is Windows before Macs introduced the GUI as an everyday user interface. And it was soooooooooooo easy to use. So is f@rting in an elevator but no one sees the benefit.

Micro$oft has been copying Apple in every possible way for-phuqiung-ever.

Now they can’t stand that Apple is so publically kicking their proverbial okolee (Hawaiian for you know here) that they have to try to figure out a way to beat the iPod market without infringing on Apple and in the process also destroy the balance of the 20 – 25% Market share that “the also rans” have in the digital music market.

As for the real world of Macs and the installed base – reality is: 25 – 30% of the global market but who is counting. Why so high? Macs last longer, are more relilable and they just work. AND no viruses. Every Mac I have owned has been a tool the get things done – I didn’t have to rebuild it or restart it all the time just to get my job done. And since I have installed OS X on my systems – 99.99999999999% of the time I do not have to restart (except for upgrades). I have two Windblows PCs in my lab to run 1) a CNC programme and 2) to run the design programme to generate the code from my Mac designs for the CNC machine (I have since discovered that I can use CANVAS to generate my code for the CNC machine, so guess how often I have to start up the one PC (as in almost never)). My point is that EVERY time I run my PC, I have to upgrade virus protection scheme and shock of shocks – restart. If I want to add a USB mouse or keyboard, I have to install new drivers and (gasp) restart. If it is cloudy and the humidity is a bit higher and there are birds outside my office window feeding in the feeder, I have to reboot (just kidding, but it seems like that). Why anyone wants to keep using the POSs I have no idea. Oh, right – the need for gaming. I forgot.

As a scientist, writer, illustrator, business owner, marine photographer, music composer and all around nice guy; I prefer – no demand – a Mac. Only makes financial sense to me. I don’t waste time rebuilding my computer every day – I just use it. Period.

And I have more time for meeting(s), etc.

I home this helps with any meeting of the minds that is hoped for. (MDN = meeting)

  5. The ONLY anti spyware software that is anygood is free and open source. and you need like 3 or 4 to get everything, and even with 3 or 4 you still cant get everything… HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH

    windows… HAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAH

    internets… HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH

    good luck…

windows is for offline gaming, but in the near future they will even lose ground there – and its not that it does well; its just there currently isnt anything as robust and capable.

  6. A Mac sales perfect storm? I think it is coming soon. Did you see those numbers Apple reported for the 3rd fiscal quarter? 800,000 notebooks — with only half a quarter’s time for MacBook sales! And we are now in the back to school quarter. I can not come up with a reasonable sales scenario in which Mac sales for the current quarter will be closer to one million units than to two million units.

    How sweet it is!

  7. “Since most of the world talks Windows”

Most people who HAVE Windows don’t even really know what it is or what it’s for. Ask 10 random off the street people what Windows is and I bet no more than two of them would call it an operating system.

  8. “And just to expand on that point, with each version, OS X has become slightly faster which actually improves the useful life of some machines.”

I agree with that statement 100%. After putting Tiger on my Cube, I absolutely could not believe how fast it boots. I mean its under 10 secs.

  9. macs are easy to use? so is windows. … macs are great if u are too lazy to work a computer.

Actually, I like to think of Macs as allowing smarter use. Spending extra time in Windows dealing with crashes, viruses, hangs, glitches, and a bunch of extra steps in every process is a waste of my efforts. I would rather spend that time doing, you know, actual stuff that I want to do, rather than stuff the OS forces me to do. Am I lazy? No, I would just rather enjoy being productive.

  10. XP does work fine and I don’t need to endlessly fidget with it to keep it working

Work with a Mac for about a month without touching Windows…then go back and use it…you will be shocked to discover just how much “endless fidgeting” you actually have to do with Windows. True, XP might be much better compared to, say, Windows2000, but it doesn’t hold a candle to OS X in terms of smarter use of your time. It’s not just easier…it is smarter, safer, and more stable.

Really, other than a few PC-only software titles and gaming (and those are shifting as we speak), there is no advantage to Windows at all anymore.

  11. It’s amazing. Trolls come here and tell us BS about the Windows experience thinking most of us have never been inflicted with Windows before.

Trolls, we’ve all used Windows long enough to know we love our Macs, hardware and software. It’s not perfect yet but it’s a hell of a lot better than Windows on a Dell.

  12. unfortunatly people are stupid, ask most people what windows is and they WONT KNOW… even TRY TO TALK TO THEM about OSX or linux, and they will look at you like a deer in the headlights, they DONT GET IT! “Isnt every computer the same; they think to themselves.” they dont know what an OS is, they dont know what windows is, they dont know that comptuers use windows, they dont know that there is an option, why? because most people are inept and stupid and TOTALLY UNWILLING TO LEARN OR TRY NEW THINGS.

    fucking windows blind idiots.

  13. “99% of recent sales of Macs are to people that already own Macs – if they weren´t then Apple would be crowing about the huge number of Windows buyers being first time Mac owners.”

Uhhh, not true, Neat and Tidy. Apple has said recently on several occasions (most recently at their Q3 conference call) that 50% of Mac purchases are to people new to the platform.

    Look it up.

  14. Cubert: “that 50% of Mac purchases are to people new to the platform.”

Does not say that – it says 50% of the customers coming in the Apples stores are Windows owners. Most iPods are purchased by windows owners and they come back to buy accessories and Apple sells other 3rd party products in the stores.

(I bought something in an Apple store the other day and no one asked me if I was a Window or Apple owner – how do they come up with this info???)

  15. @Macfanboy: “(I bought something in an Apple store the other day and no one asked me if I was a Window or Apple owner – how do they come up with this info???)”

Because Apple figures every Mac owner also owns a PC!

  16. I am a musician and used software that was available on both Windows and Mac. I had always wanted to use a Mac (since my elementary school experiences with the IIe). It just seemed to be more intuitive, easier to use, etc. Well, after winning several vocal competitions and a couple other gigs I felt I had enough money to justify buying the Mac.

I do feel that if Apple wants to catch on, they do need to release at least one “all in one” machine under a thousand dollars. It’s quite absurd to think that the iMac of 2000 cost less than the iMac of today.

I also feel though that Apple needs to enter the PDA market once more. I know that the NEWTON once existed, and had some remarkable features, but it’s time for the “iPod PLUS” or something like that to come out, that I could write on, etc. I would never use a PC tablet simply because towards the end of my TOSHIBA days it became such an awful experience to use that machine.

The MacBook is (so far) the perfect machine. I haven’t had any of the coloration problems (knock on wood), and yes, it’s a little warmer than most laptops, but all around it’s just a more stable machine.

I have recorded more music files with GarageBand than I ever recorded using any software I had on the PC. Why? Because between the ease of GarageBand and the integrated Mic with my MacBook, quick recordings are no longer a challenge, but exactly that, quick and easy.

Apple’s vertical integration strategy greatly appeals to me, as someone who values my time and doesn’t want to have to waste it.. By creating everything in-house it just runs better.

Microsoft’s end is near. I would not be surprised to see Gateway, HP, and Dell want to start developing their own OS. And guess what, if they all went in on it together, Microsoft would collapse. If they just stopped giving you the MS program, most home users would just use whatever they were given, especially if the office suite was MS office compatable.

All that has to be done is for Sibelius to go universal and I will be the happiest user in the world.

  17. The features that are highly toted as revolutionary to day are simply evolutionary. AmigaOS and Atari’s MultiTOS both were ahead of their times in terms of what OS’s should be like. Flexible, configurable and secure.

Try emulating either of these OS’s and run some of the programs created back then such as PageStream, Calamus, Papyrus and be blown away at how fast and feature rich things were back in the day.

  18. Hell yeah, Amiga Fanboy.

My old Amiga 4000 emulated a Mac FASTER than the fastest Mac available at the time. Multimedia wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Jay Miner and his amazing way-way-way-ahead-of-its-time computer. Too bad C= dropped the ball.

  19. “u can get everything as good as ilife for windows, u just have to shop around and not be lazy. macs are great if u are too lazy to work a computer.”

    They’re also great if you’re too lazy to type proper English! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  20. The thing I love about people like Mac sales = who cares is the presumption that ‘working’ the computer is – in some way – an end in itself when any sane person knows that you purchase a computer to help you achieve something that you either couldn’t achieve manually or to help you improve your efficiency for a set of tasks.

Nobody buys a computer to learn how to use the operating system, or how to juggle IRQs or whatever passes for fun in Windows propellor-head geekdom.

And the other source of hilarity are statements like u can get everything as good as ilife for windows, u just have to shop around and not be lazy.. So, in this dweeb’s world, time spent shopping for something is better spent than time spent actually using the hardware/software for which you would be shopping.

Here – for the benefit of the stupid – is a challenge: go and find an easy-to-use ‘digital lifestyle’ suite (video editor, DVD publisher, photo librarian, music librarian [iTune], audio studio [GarageBand] and blog publishing tool [iWeb]) for $79.

By the way, the video editor and the DVD publisher have to be capable of maintaining an HDV/HD stream from source through to finished product (yes, I know BluRay/HD-DVD isn’t available on a Mac as yet – but the clock is ticking and that’s not the point of the challenge) and the video editor has to be capable of more than just straight-cuts. Projects created by the video editor and the audio studio have to be capable of being opened by professional level apps.

In addition, as I can buy iLife stand-alone or as part of a new Mac, the Windows equivalent has to be freely available as a stand-alone software product and not ONLY be a ‘special edition’ tied to a given Windows OEM unit.
