“Twenty years after logging on for the first time, I’m logging off – forever. No, I’m not retiring but I am finally through with that soul-stomping repository of bad karma known as my PC. And after chucking the machine down the dumpster,” Charles Cooper writes for CNET News.
“Speaking personally, I’ve had only good luck with the latest Mac incarnation, the G5. No wonder the company’s stock is soaring to new highs. Hand it to Steve Jobs for making Apple relevant again. Only a few years ago, few within the ranks of the digerati would have made that bet,” Cooper writes. “So it’s goodbye protected mode. Shalom Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Auf weidersehen application registry. Meet me at autoxec.bat’s silver anniversary party.”
Charles Cooper is the executive editor of commentary at CNET News.com.

Welcome on board Cory. Good to have you join the club.
Oh sh*t. I’m a loser again.
This almost brings tears to my eyes….well almost. Let’s see where we are at by December after I buy my parents a Mac mini, my brother an iPod, my other brother a ….
Pundits always credit Jobs with bringing Apple back from the verge of extinction.
Jobs has closed his recent Keynotes acknowledging the long hours and hard work of Apple employees, and the sacrifices of the families.
The truth is that Apple survives because the leadership had vision enough “not to mortgage the future” by sacking its R&D staff when times were tough. Things got tough because the board started to listen to the bean counters instead of continuing to focus on innovation (a quote from Steve Jobs, if I recall correctly).
Cory:
Welcome aboard. After regaining my Dad’s HP and seeing all the work that goes into just making a pc useable, I can understand your desire to switch. And you are right about the machines, they are beautiful. You won’t be disappointed, just take your time and you will learn OS X easily. Should you have any questions, there are lots of people here to help and the Apple forums are very good for help as well. I switched last February and I can’t imagine going back.
I think you will find most Mac users feel they belong to a family, at least that was my impression and now I can say there is a special bond shared between Mac users (if not a family, at least a club). If you follow the posts here long enough you will find that we disagree on many things, but we all agree that using a Mac is the only way to go (except for the regular trolls, they just refuse enlightenment but they’re ok too, they’re are like pets).
Speaking of…

You don’t have to feel that way, turn away from the dark side and embrace the Apple way. You know you want to.

I replied this jerks response
“You do know what kernel mode means, don’t you? Oh wait, I’m talking to a Mac head. Never mind.”
Well, my wife uses a pc (always has) and she doesn’t know what one is. Oh, and I asked my secretary (she uses one too) and she didn’t know. I also asked my mom, sisters, friend, and a few others who use pc’s and they don’t know either. Are you trying to say only pompus IT guys who need to protect their job need to use a pc? Ok, I’m up for that if you are.
And now, because he’s actually been using OS X, when Mr. Cooper reads all his forum replies spouting all their Mac-bashing nonsense, he’s just going to smile and react to them like we do. Interesting..
Is it churlish to be thinking something about rats and sinking ships?
Switchers abound! My roommate is at the apple store as I type this picking up a 20″ G5 iMac and ditching his toshiba craptop! 2005 is going to be a good year for apple!
Jim S.:
Not all pompus IT guys use PCs. I happen to use a Mac every day. My other computer is a Sun workstation running Solaris 10. My other other computer is a triple-boot PC that is currently running Fedora. I have Winderz PC in here somewhere.
Besides, I don’t know what the hell kernel mode is either. But I come from the UNIX world, so I’m not so lucky to know.
I only know four… this year anyway. It won’t be 15 for me until summer
