Apple iPod and the also-rans

“The arrival of the sleek, slim and colorful iPod Mini last spring sent Apple into orbit. More than 2 million iPods have been shipped to stores, Apple reported in October, and though rivals such as RCA, iRiver America and Creative Labs make cheaper MP3 players that hold more music than iPods, Apple’s cool design and hot marketing have separated the company from the competition. In fact, ‘iPod’ has come synonymous with ‘portable music player,’ in the way ‘Aspirin’ represented ‘medicine pill’ a century ago,” Eric Gwinn writes for The Chicago Tribune.
