Apple leases 30,000 sq. ft. five-story NYC building opposite Empire State Building

Apple Computer has leased a third Manhattan property for a future Apple Retail Store opposite the Empire State Building at 21 W. 34th St., according to a report from NY Post.

Apple has leased the entire, 30,000-square-foot five-story building from Jeff Sutton of Wharton Realty and his partner, SL Green Realty Trust, sources told the Post. Apple already has a store open in SoHo and has installed a glass entry cube at the GM Building where it will soon open the doors of it’s next NYC Apple showplace.

  1. Has anyone checked the North Pole lately? Maybe Super Steve has erected a giant cube shaped Fortress of Solitude from where a global RDF signal can be broadcasted?

(P.S. O/T: Bill and Melinda G. and Bono made Time Persons of the Year. I guess you can fool Mother Nature at in least in online polls.)

MW: hope (nice seasonal MWs MDN!)

  2. “Maybe Super Steve has erected a giant cube shaped Fortress of Solitude from where a global RDF signal can be broadcasted?”

I’d settle for a wordlwide Apple Wimax service that delivers high speed video content and phone service.

FWIW, Bill G and Bono got the award for their humanitarian work, not for being a technological innovator. In fact, I think Bono probably is more innovative than Billy.

  3. Hammer, Bill Gates and his wife do more than enough. His kids are only getting 10 milliom dollars each from his fortune. The rest is going to charity. Thats probably the only thing that’s good about Bill. Other than that, he’s a dumbass for making windows…..

  4. “21 W. 34th St.” ?? This is down by Broadway, right? I am trying to figure out which building this is by looking at the photos on a9.com. Is it as far West as the Starbucks? It would seem to be right next door to Banana Republic.

  5. This is fantastic. The ESB draws millions of tourists every year. Now they will be confronted on 34th Street by another well designed building that offers them a chance to get out of the NYC Cold/Heat and look at cuting edge industrial design and technology. It’s the best stuff in the world in the best place in the world.

  6. This is the new home for Apple Records. Steve will announce in January that Apple Computer has purchased Apple Corps., is setting up independent record publishing and production deals with artists, and is the new exclusive source for all Beatles recordings.

  7. a pity it wasn’t finished at the time of Kong’s climb. Oh wait, that was 50yrs ago. oh well. Maybe there will be a sequel featuring monkeyboy Balmer climbing to the top and throwing some chairs direction AppleStore.

  8. daniel: It’s closer to 5th than to Broadway, on the north side of 34th. I think it’s currently or until recently has been a shoe store. Nine West shoes maybe?

It’s pretty much dead across the street from the central 34th St. entrance to the Empire State building.

  9. NY badly needs another Apple store.

The SoHo store is packed everyday to the point of being an unpleasant place to go.

Now during the holidays its a madhouse.

Three stores may seem like a lot to those unfamiliar with NY, but trust me they will all be filled with paying customers

  10. Teno I have to argee with almost 21 million people combined people during the holidays, new york becomes seriouly over populated with poetential converts! so 1.4 miles between the 2 stores is almost even too far if I dare to say. between 34 & 54 I’m sure you can @ least have close to 3 million people with maybe even 200,000 people visiting those stores, that will be serious income for Apple. I just hope people realize there is light @ the end of the tunnel before it’s too late.

  11. btw, I agree with those who say Manhattan needs more stores. It sure does! I lived near 80th and Amsterdam for a year (back on Left Coast now), and was excited to hear that Apple was looking at property around 84th and Broadway. That’s a hike from 59th and 5th (through Central Park, or grabbing the subway in the UWS to xfer to the N/R, which is roundabout…) Hmm, almost easier to stay on subway and just go to J&R ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  12. Apple Store Update….

my daughter and wife just went to the Apple Store in Mission Viejo. Had a 2 hour wait to get help at the genius bar. They said it was so crowded it reminded them of disneyland on a bad day. Ipods, and macs were selling fast and furious.

    go apple

  13. But why would they need five stories? what does it tell us about what Apple is up to? does it imply that there will be a real push into the business market, beyond the creatives?

    go, apple, go!

MW: small; as in this new store is definitely not small.
