Apple today unveiled a completely redesigned iPod nano featuring Apple’s Multi-Touch interface that lets users navigate their music collection by simply tapping or swiping a finger on the display. Nearly half the size and weight of the previous generation, the new iPod nano features a polished aluminum and glass enclosure with a built-in clip, making it instantly wearable. The new iPod nano features Genius Mixes, the ability to create and edit playlists, a built-in FM radio with live pause and up to 24 hours of music playback on a single battery charge.
“This is the biggest reinvention of the iPod nano since its debut in 2005, and we think users are going to love it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “Replacing the click wheel with our Multi-Touch interface has enabled us to shrink the iPod nano into an amazingly small design that is instantly wearable with its built-in clip.”
The new iPod nano with Apple’s Multi-Touch interface allows users to access their songs, artists, albums and playlists with a tap or swipe of their finger on the display. Holding down a finger returns the user to the Home screen, and users can easily use two fingers to rotate the screen if it is clipped onto their clothing upside down. Users can also customize their Home screen by simply dragging icons from other screens onto the Home screen.
iPod nano also features Shake to Shuffle, giving music lovers the ability to shake their iPod nano to shuffle to a new song in their music library. With its built-in FM radio, iPod nano lets you listen to your favorite radio stations, and live pause lets you pause and resume playing your favorite FM radio shows without missing a beat.
With an amazing new design that is nearly half the size and weight of its predecessor, the new ultra-portable iPod nano is a natural workout companion. Clip iPod nano onto your workout clothing, touch your music and start your workout. iPod nano features a built-in pedometer that makes it easy to track your steps and also supports Nike + iPod®, giving users the ability to track runs and workouts.
iPod is the world’s most popular family of digital music players with over a quarter billion sold. Apple’s new holiday lineup includes a brand new iPod shuffle for just $49; the remarkable new iPod nano with Multi-Touch starting at $149; the incredible new iPod touch with Retina display, Apple’s A4 chip, FaceTime, HD video recording and Game Center starting at just $229; and iPod classic in a 160GB model for $249.
The new iPod nano will be available next week for a suggested price of $149 (US) for the 8GB model and $179 (US) for the 16GB model. Both models are available in silver, graphite, blue, green, orange and pink through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. Who is going to buy a nano when you can get a Touch for just a few $$ more???
Call me crazy, but did they take out the ability to shoot video? I don’t see it listed as a feature anywhere.
Looks like you gotta get a Touch if you want video. New Nano too tiny to hold steady anyway.
Can you still watch videos on it?
This is the most high tech postage stamp I’ve ever seen.
I’m with Fitz … where’s the video camera? They figure FaceTime on the touch is sufficient? The current version may be twice as large, but it’s still plenty small … and it will double as a cut-rate video camera. Now, if I needed a decent video camera, it wouldn’t do. But if I need a decent video camera, I can GET one.
I may have to get an “old-style” nano before the store runs out of them.
I doubt most people really care about having video on a nano. I think it’s a great compromise. Small and multi-touch, if I want to do video, I’m going for my iPhone 4.

Now if it has an accelerometer and WiFi it could go inside a glove and do everything a Wii controller or Kinnect(?) hand controller can do.
I have to say I’m dissapointed with this line up of iPods. Apple is not allowing it’s user to grow with the product. The capacity of these products have not changed, they are still delivering low GB on them. Come on…. still only 2GB for a shuffle, that should be up to around 4 or 6 at this point and still only 8 & 16 for a nano. The most disappointing is the touch, what’s the point in making it thinner if it still has the same 64GB capcity as the last one (I’m pissed my
iPhone is still 32GB) This device can now caputure video and play some amazing game, HD quality content and you can take pictures……yet it still at 64 GB. The fact the nano still does not have intergraded Bluetooth for headphone is a deal breaker for me……I still have to use an adapter for them. Not only is the GB size in the Touch a deal breaker for me…..you still can’t do Bluetooth file transfer with non apple devices (and some apple devices) without an app. Apple need to grow it’s products with it’s consumer…..you are adding great new features….yet still keep your GB levels the same. I guess long live the iPod classic and it’s non SSD !!!!
@ iPod Lover:
I believe that’s the plan.
My pessimistic views on the new iPods
shuffle: Generations 2 & 3 had a baby, that is all
nano: No video camera? No video playback?
touch: Cameras! YAY! Wait…the back camera is 960×640?….damn.
classic:…..you’re still ALIVE?!
Bonus
Apple TV: They want me to buy an HDTV now?
Goodnight Everybody!
PS: I love Apple and their products, these are simply my let downs. I could be an @ss, and say “well they didn’t bump up the capacity, wtf?” but I won’t, because after the iPhone 4 keeping the 16/32 capacities, I’m not surprised. My final conclusion: I’m happy with my iPhone 4.
Never could understand the rationale for including video or video camera on a nano. The screen has been / is way too small to appreciate video. Camera takes mediocre clips. The new Nano is much more in line with matching its size to user functionality and ease of use.
My iPod Touch (2G) is 32 gb, which is plenty big. In fact, I’d rather have a 16 gb unit. I move content on/off as I wish, based on my listening/viewing preferences at any given time. For me, there is no purpose/reason to carry around 32+ GB of my music/video library. I find the more choices I have, the harder it is to make a choice (there’s a book out called “The paralysis of Choice”. Simplicity has its merits, especially when selecting music and video content.
Well, it looks like it was the Nano’s turn in the barrel, last year it was the Shuffle’s. I will add my voice to the chorus of those dissatisfied with the new Nano – hope that Apple will get that corrected by next Sept. ala the Shuffle. Which, by the way, looks nice – good to see it back to a 2nd Gen. styling.
Lastly, what the hell is up with Apple’s “make it smaller” fetish?
I think the Nano is cool. I will have to see it and play with it before making a final decision. I would have personally made the screen just a little bigger so you could at least maybe do more with it. But i think that this will be great for the nano.
Why does everyone think that we need ipods with tons and tons of storage? Do you realize just how much 64Gb is? Its allot. And yes i know some people seem to think they should take every movie and mp3 they have on their ipod i think its crazy to carry so much music.
But then everyone is going to complain what an apple event be without someone to complain
Apple Fixed the iPod Shuffle
BUT
THEY REALLY F**k*D THE IPOD NANO BADLY.
Biggest selling point for the Nano was the Camera, and now it’s gone. No Camera is a definite fail!!!!!!!
Navigating around with that little touch screen is just as bad as having no screen or buttons like the old 3rd gen shuffle.
You saw how steve used it, he looked cramped. I just can’t believe Steve approving this.
I’m gonna buy a refurbished Previous generation Nano. Easier to use and Navigate, Bigger Screen, Camera, more comfortable to hold. The old Nano I think is Worth much more than the New Nano. This will be the 1st time I don’t upgrade to the newest Nano.
Bloody gorgous!
Everyone in my family saw the pics on the Apple website and they all said they want one!
These are gonna fly off the shelves!
I WANT ONE!
A friend of mine just ordered the new nano to use for the gym, but I’ve already got the 2nd gen. shuffle so the new nano offers me nothing of value. I love my 5th gen. nano and the video camera and playback capability are quite handy. The new nano will appeal to some such as my friend, but I think I will save my pennies and upgrade from my first gen. iPod touch.
Also, the first photos make the new nano look rather ugly.
The iPod classic lives!
The new nano is a throwback to the original and 2nd gen iPod nanos, in that it’s basically a really small music player. The “multi-touch” feature seems a bit gimmicky, although it’s cool that there is no top or bottom end of the device anymore.
I clip an iPod shuffle (2G) to a set of Sennheiser lanyard headphones (CXL400) now, and that’s probably my most used iPod. I could basically do the same thing with this new nano.
I just Ordered My New Nano.
Well
I Ordered a New Old Nano.
I just got the Blk Refurbished 5th Gen Nano as I’ll give my current 1 to a cousin.
Video Capture even @ 640 X 480 is important to me. I use it all the time and all my youtube vids are recorded with it.
Ok it needs to have the accelerometer to keep the display upright
with a toggle to turn if off like the iPad ok thank you Steve.
Merry Christmas to all.

guys, you’re inadvertently stumbling upon Apple’s strategy, which is brilliant. Apple wants people to pay “just a few dollars more” for the iPod Touch! duh!
unlike many posters here, i don’t see the lack of camera or video as an issue. the screen was always too small to be a realistic video player. This unit will be much better for active users. The previous form factor sucked. This model is a huge leap forward in interface. Jobs giveth, and Jobs taketh away. I am not complaining. if you need your pocket videocam, then the new Touch is what you have always wanted anyway.
i agree with mike this is just a way to give people something they can just clip and go. They dont have to get an armband or anything while i cant pass total judgement till i see it in person i think allot of people will be pleased with it.
I’m a long term Apple and iPod user but this lineup does nothing for me. I guess it comes down to the point that scrolling through music is much faster than swiping so in future I’ll be buying refurbished nanos for flash drives. After they run out I don’t know what I’ll be doing. Maybe by that time Apple will change it’s policy, but I doubt they’ll go back to scrolling.
Clarification: Second line – nanos for flash drive based music.
No Cam on the Nano is cool, that means the Flip cam I’ve been trying to sell just gained in value! Now maybe I can unload the thing!
