Podcasting grows to 6 million listeners

“Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults who own MP3 players like Apple Computer’s iPod say they have downloaded podcast programs from the Internet, according to the study released Sunday by the Pew Internet and American Life Project,” Reuters reports. “That means more than 6 million people are listening to a form of communication that emerged only last year, according to the nonprofit group.”

“Podcasters create radio-like programs of commentary, music or humor, which are saved in MP3 audio format and posted online. Listeners are automatically notified when a new podcast is available,” Reuters reports. “The Pew Internet and American Life Project based its survey on telephone interviews with 208 digital-media player owners between Feb. 21 and March 21. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 7.5 percentage points.”

Louis Ramirez writes for The Washington Post, “Pioneered by former MTV VJ Adam Curry, a podcast is basically an audio blog, a program recorded into an MP3 file that you can post or pick up at sites online. You don’t need an iPod — or a Mac — to create or listen to one, and unlike commercial radio, podcasts don’t have to conform to FCC regulations, so there’s no limit to what you can say. Want to showcase your best friend’s band or embark on an expletive-filled rant about the state of the union? Here’s how.”

  1. Oh…oh my GOD! I got first post! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO! Finally, after all these years!!! OMG, I can’t breath…I can’t breath. I’m so excited I think I just crapped myself! Thank you, oh thank you MDN for the privilege and honor of being number 1!!! I don’t know what to say, I’m speechless! This is the happiest day of my life! All the events that have led to this moment in time have suddenly taken on new meaning and purpose! I know now why I exist. I know what I have been put on this Earth to do. It’s all become clear to me now.

My life has no meaning now. What value can life possibly have knowing that I can never again accomplish something as important as obtaining first post for the first time. I can’t go on…goodbye cruel world… >>*sound of gun being cocked*<<

  2. Hey, Andy — that was . . . a long way to go for . . . I’m sorry, what was I saying?

Oh, yes. Andy — the hospital called. Your mother’s on de way to pick you up and take you home. Yeh-hesssss. Seems there was so little of anything in your head that the bullet just ricocheted around a bit and flew out your ear!

Good news, though. Now you can resume your pathetic attempts to get another first post someday. I mean, it’s not really that hard. You should see some of the nerds around here who’ve done it . . .

  3. I know how Andy feels. It is a great feeling getting the first post, and it seems MDN is the only site left where you can feel this exhilaration. It is well worth tolerating those pop-under ads, and the stories are real nice.

This podcast thing seems to be taking off like wildfire. The new blogging it seems.

  4. Oh and Andy, I think- wait a minute! Andy C.? Andy C.???

That’s no Andy C.! Your last name begins with an ‘R’!!!!

    RICHTER, THAT’S YOU!!!

Yeh-heh-heh-heh-heessssssss. Come on out, my big fat Andy Richter . . .

    . . . before I POOP ON YOU!!!
