ComputerWorld: Apple iMac G5 combines ease-of-use, power and elegance – this machine rocks

“Like many of you, I heard the iMac G5 announcement several weeks ago, and when I saw a picture of the new desktop computer on the Apple Web site, my first reaction was: ‘I want this — now!’ I recently had the pleasure of taking delivery of the top-of-the-line 20-in. iMac G5 — provided by Apple for review purposes — and I can honestly say that I still have that same visceral reaction every time I see it anywhere in my house,” Yuval Kossovsky writes for ComputerWorld.

“I want to stress that the iMac G5 is truly a ‘family computer’ and was designed as such. For those who need to do intensive 3-D renderings, genome sequencing or other compute-intensive tasks, Apple’s Power Mac dual-processor G5 machines are more appropriate. However, if you’re just surfing the Internet, getting e-mail, processing photos, editing home videos, making music, doing home banking and studying, the iMac G5, with either a 1.6-GHz or 1.8-GHz G5 chip, is more than enough computing power,” Kossovsky writes. “Being a technojunkie, I was skeptical that 64MB of video RAM would be enough to drive the screen; and the Nvidia card Apple uses has come under fire from would-be gamers who want something more powerful. But with the bus optimization engineered into the system, I wasn’t disappointed with video performance in any way.”

“This machine rocks. For PC users tempted to switch platforms, Detto Technologies makes a product called Move2Mac that simplifies the migration process from Windows to Mac OS X. I will be covering that very issue in my next article, because my wife (a lawyer and longtime PC user) decided when she saw this machine that it was time to try a Mac,” Kossovsky writes. A new migration tool built in to the new iMac G5 asks if you have another Mac you are migrating from. If so, you hook up a FireWire cable to your old machine (booted in FireWire target mode), and the migration software will copy over your accounts and applications with settings to the new computer. It’s easy and simple. Combine that with power and elegance and you have the new iMac.”

  1. Yahoo! I sure hope that Apple gets a bump from all this. Not so much because I’m worried about Apple’s market-share, but because I want good design and software to be rewarded. I also want the good guys to win.

    Mark

    P.S. Cheney kicked ass tonight!

  2. Cheney is great. It’s the fact the he’s the V.P. that makes me so confident in our current administration.

I remember his strong role in the 91 war with ICrack. Very impressive.

  3. We may be at a ‘tipping point’. I simply can not remember every seeing this many positive Mac reviews without a trace of “This is a great Macintosh computer if you want a Macintosh computer”, or “This Mac is great except that is costs more than a PC and there isn’t any software”, or “Macs are cool but Apple has a miniscule market share and will likely be out of business soon”.

Microsoft, on the other hand, seems to be able to drop the ball on every play these days. Nice to see them so beleaguered. Intel seems to be struggling, too.

    About fscking time, I say.

    Mike

  4. The g5 imac looks great, who wouldn’t want to own one? Cheney is another pawn in the republican lies. When will this country wake up. Bush should not even be president. The voters need to make a statement for the good of america and the world and get that ass out of office!

  5. Cheney lies. Don’t believe it? Read John Dean’s “Worse Than Watergate.”

Why does Cheney refuse to be accountable to the American public? Secret meetings with oil and energy executives, and by law has been ordered to produce the list, and he and Shrub had defied Congress’ leagal oversight.

He breaks the law, is trying to create an Imperial presidency and promotes a deadly agenda that will lead to world war.

It’s about time Macs got the attention they deserve!

  6. C’mon Bob…that’s what democracy is about. The voters choose. The country is very, very awake right now; certainly more awake than when Clinton was in office. The voters will decide in November who’s an ass. Isn’t it great that we all have a right to our own opinon?

  7. This will be greate year for Apple!
iMac G5 will be huge success.
It is coing to be creat xMas season because everybody wants one.

Terrorists like Bush, Sharon and Cheney should be in jail.
Terrorist countries like USA and Israel are the biggest threat to the World Peace.

  8. One Guy: You forgot the UK. At least the US has the decency to put Guantanamo offshore where nobody can demostrate effectively against it. Here we have Belmarsh right here to lock up people with no trial and no idication of a release date after three years.

  9. I think we can leave the political B.S. for other forums.

It is truly amazing how much praise the new iMac is garnering in the press. I hope it continues long into the future.

As an aside, did anyone notice (in the U.S.) that the post debate analysis on NBC featured 2 bloggers… both had their iBooks perched on their laps with the Apple logo prominently displayed!

    Now THAT kicks ass!

  10. I’m glad Cheney specifically mentioned the video card and said it wasn’t a problem. I’m not buying Operation Iraqi Freedom, so I’m not looking for ballistic video performance. I still might hold off, though. Maybe a new administration will bring a better video card to the iMac.

  11. Well, now that I’ve had some time to think about this, I’m not so sure. Maybe Cheney assessment of the iMac’s video RAM was overly optimistic. Maybe 64MB isn’t enough to effectively deal with a game like Operation Iraqi Freedom. Maybe we need more video RAM on the ground to change the dynamics of the system.
