The 2021 MacBook Pro armed with Apple’s M1 Max is destroying high-end chipsets in benchmarks and real-world tests left and right, even, remarkably, while running on battery power. In fact, the 5K iMac featuring an Intel Core i9 CPU and an AMD Radeon 5700 XT is unable to beat the new M1 Max MacBook Pro.
Earlier, we reported that the M1 Max obtained a GPU score that was three times higher than what the M1 obtained, but what about when it faced off against Apple’s powerful desktop offering? According to YouTuber Jonathan Morrison, the 16.2-inch 2021 MacBook Pro does not have any competition here either because, in the Geekbench 5 Metal benchmark, which stresses the GPU, the M1 Max obtained a higher score while running on battery power.

When it comes to tackling other tasks such as image editing, an Affinity Photo developer commented that this GPU is faster than a $6000 AMD Radeon Pro W6900X, which was previously the fastest GPU ever tested using the editing program.

So they are throttled when on battery power?
Laptops using Apple’s silicon don’t need to be throttled when running on battery power. That’s something which used to be done on inefficient power hungry chips.
the problem was the conversion of power into heat, that is what caused the throttling, with the M1Max the power is converted to process!
In an Apple manual I read a couple of years ago, processor speed bumped up about 20% when a MBP is plugged in. That data may be useless info at this point.
For Apple Silicon, being on battery power is probably irrelevant in terms of performance. This iMac is “i9” (which is 10-core) with best GPU option. It currently cost $4399 with 64GB memory and 1TB storage. The 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro (64GB memory and 1TB storage) costs $3899.
Still, for this one pure performance number, the best new MBP isn’t blowing away the best current Intel iMac. It explains why there is no M1 Pro or Max iMac. When that Apple Silicon model arrives (with M2 something), it will be undeniably better (at least 3 to 4 times faster) in best config.

As the Macalope says: Future products that aren’t shipping always beat current Apple products. So, yeah, whatever.
How is this even news? the iMac 5k and it’s barely bargain bin AMD GPU from 2019 isn’t even an in the same class as other hardware AMD, Nvidia & Intel make. The M1 Max is faster than the low-end parts Apple purchased to make the iMac 5k. Apple sold low end performance parts in the iMac 5k. This only “embarrasses” Intel and AMD because of Apple’s shopping list and choosing profit margin over performance.
