Facebook is planning to rebrand the company with a new name

Facebook is planning to change its company name next week to reflect its focus on building the metaverse, The Verge reports, citing “a source with direct knowledge of the matter.”

Alex Heath for The Verge:

The coming name change, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28th, but could unveil sooner, is meant to signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than social media and all the ills that entail. The rebrand would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more.

In July, he told The Verge that, over the next several years, “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”

A rebrand could also serve to further separate the futuristic work Zuckerberg is focused on from the intense scrutiny Facebook is currently under for the way its social platform operates today. A former employee turned whistleblower, Frances Haugen, recently leaked a trove of damning internal documents to The Wall Street Journal and testified about them before Congress. Antitrust regulators in the US and elsewhere are trying to break the company up, and public trust in how Facebook does business is falling.

MacDailyNews Take: They ought to call Facebook what it is: Societal Cancer.

(Which might also be an interesting name for a metal band.)

All of these “social media” platforms – Twitter, Parler, Facebook – are cancers on society. They are clearly eating society from the inside out. There’s something unsavory within human nature that “digital distance” amplifies to the point of disgust.

If you quit these cancers you will quickly realize what they are and what they do. You will be happier and healthier to have excised them from your life.

We haven’t had personal Twitter or Facebook accounts for many years now. And very happily so.MacDailyNews, January 9, 2021

Facebook is to privacy as Chernobyl is to nuclear power.MacDailyNews, February 3, 2021

Zuckerberg: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuckerberg: Just ask
Zuckerberg: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SSNs
Zuckerberg: People just submitted it.
Zuckerberg: I don’t know why.
Zuckerberg: They “trust me”
Zuckerberg: Dumb fucks

If you trust Mark Zuckerberg to be the keeper of your photos, contacts, political views, religious beliefs, etc., you’re batshit insane. — MacDailyNews, May 23, 2018

    1. Not only a “rebranding,” but a little known “policy” called “XCheck” has become more visible.
The policy gave certain people–those favored & truly elites–exceptions FB’s active screening and posting restrictions.

If this doesn’t amp concern and confirm the malfeasance of the last 2 yrs (election cycle, esp), one needs to crank down their personal narrative switch, to enable clear vision.

  1. It’s an interesting analogy MDN, but while Facebook has made many egregious errors with regard to people’s privacy, (some I believe are exaggerated), it is not the services that are the cancer. They are merely the X-ray machine that allowed us to see the already metastasized cancers eating away at our society. Those cancers came from feeding on a particularly carcinogenic ideology that first attacked our schools and universities, then spread to government, our news media, and now the corporations.

In fact, it may be the same social media services that unmasked the cancer, which allow us to fight back.

One need only look at how eagerly the widespread tumors are to attack Facebook, Twitter, and the others at this point in time.

    1. It may have been latent and already present …only to emerge vigorously with FB, but the company itself described the effect on the users as the “social validation feedback loop.” The leadership knew full well what they were creating and some had serious concerns. Co-founder, Sean Parker harkens back to the “effect” with, what could be best described as, regret.

It feeds the superficial tribal identity that serves culture in no good way.

  2. Facebook might a cause and effect for many issues, but they enhanced it significantly by taking sides in a political race where Free speech is paramount..

Not to mention the pandemic, where again, whether some info is good or bad should be my choice, not theirs. Let me figure it out whats BS and whats not.

    1. @Think, very important distinction Facebook is engaged in Democrat promotion and Republican suppression. Just ask the former president. My biggest problem with FAKEbook is the obvious bias and not allowing all points of view to be heard.

Repeal or rewrite Section 230 to make these Silicon Valley out of control Leftists play by the rules as everyone else…
