Widening power shortages in China have halted production at numerous factories including many supplying Apple and Tesla, while some stores in the northeast of the communist-controlled country operated by candlelight and malls cut opening hours as the economic toll of the squeeze mounted.

China is in the grip of a power crunch as a shortage of coal supplies, toughening emissions standards and strong demand from manufacturers and industry have pushed coal prices to record highs and triggered widespread curbs on usage.
Rationing has been implemented during peak hours in many parts of northeastern China since last week, and residents of cities including Changchun said cuts were occurring sooner and lasting for longer, state media reported.
The impact on homes and non-industrial users comes as night-time temperatures slip to near-freezing in China’s northernmost cities. The National Energy Administration (NEA) has told coal and natural gas firms to ensure sufficient energy supplies to keep homes warm during winter.
The power squeeze is unnerving Chinese stock markets at a time when the world’s second-largest economy is already showing signs of slowing. China’s economy is grappling with curbs on the property and tech sectors and concerns around the future of cash-strapped real estate giant China Evergrande.
The power pinch has been affecting manufacturers in key industrial hubs on the eastern and southern coasts for weeks. Several key suppliers of Apple (AAPL.O) and Tesla (TSLA.O) halted production at some plants.

The World is having problems with energy and thinking “renewables” will fill the gap is naive and absurd. Just China’s concrete production in the last 3 yrs was greater that the US’ in the 20th century. Then there’s steel…China uses over 50% of the World’s steel. China claims 2030 will make carbon neutrality. That’s funny, EXCEPT, the World is acting like all of their dirty fuel use is coming to a close. Apparently 2021 is going to be a landmark year for their cleanliness…since 2020 marked the highest coal use in history.

The nations of the world can set all the brouhaha accords they like, but as you point out, this is a world problem and aspects beyond mere nations of a single specie should be considered. The oikos rule of thumb “There is no economy without an ecology” is much more appropriate for this discussion. The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t been a mysterious climate change down the road, it’s a quick in your face environmental change that has for a while reduced global emissions and pollution. It has also allowed wildlife to expand their habitats where human influence has been reduced. If you go to world of meters web site and check the raw number of deaths, you’ll note that 4 of the top 10 countries are nuclear powers. If you look at the Deaths/1M population you’ll see that all the super powers save for one are above the global average.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus has exposed dysfunctional aspects of the nations of the world but more importantly dysfunctional aspects of the human species:
– It is the only species that produces materials toxic to itself and every other living creatures.
– Since the industrial revolution the species has experienced exponential growth. This will not be sustained, either there will be a plateau (see the industrial revolution) or extinction.
Either way, if the species cannot regulate its population growth on its own, it will be regulated for it, one way or another. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is providing a much needed culling and putting on the brakes on our activities. It should serve as a wake up call but if it doesn’t there’s much more in store. My bets is that the planet is capable of taking care of itself, and that includes tossing the greatest species ever into the extinction trash can or watching the species do so if it so chooses, free will and all that.
