Mississippi ends mask mandate and business restrictions

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced on Tuesday that he’s lifting all state-imposed mask mandates across the state and removing COVID-19 related restrictions on business operations.

Mississippi flag

There are 14 states that do not have statewide mask mandates: Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee. Mississippi and Texas will bring that number to 16 states.

Will Stribling for Mississippi Today:

“The governor’s office is getting out of the business of telling people what they can and cannot do,” Reeves said at a press conference.

The executive order, which will go into effect on March 3 [at 5pm], replaces mask mandates and business restrictions with non-binding recommendations that they continue to follow CDC guidelines.

Shortly before Reeves’ announcement, Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas announced similar moves and declared his state would be “100%” open by March 10. Both governors attributed their decisions to declining COVID hospitalizations and the rollout of vaccines.

Under Reeves’ new order, restrictions will remain on venues hosting collegiate sporting events. The maximum capacity for indoor arenas has been doubled to 50%. Restrictions will also remain in place for both public and private K-12 schools, though they have been weakened. Masks will still be required where social distancing is not possible. Seating for K-12 extracurricular activities is now set at 50% maximum capacity outdoors and 25% indoors.

“The risk of overwhelming our hospitals with severe COVID cases is coming to a close. It gets less and less every single day we see more and more of our people, particularly those most vulnerable, vaccinated,” Reeves said… “There will still be COVID in our communities, perhaps for a significant amount of time in our state as well as across the country. “We will all need to assess for ourselves and our families to handle the risks and rewards of every and every activity we choose to pursue.”

MacDailyNews Take: Congrats, Mississippians!

According to Apple, there are 111 Apple employees, 3,800 App Store ecosystem jobs, 14 Apple suppliers and one Apple Retail Store in Mississippi.

This Tennessee Data for Masked vs. Unmasked Counties Would Be on Every Front Page, if Results Were Different

Like Florida, Tennessee is a great place to compare mask-mandated places with ones that aren’t and see if such governmental overreach really does contribute to slowing the spread of COVID-19. If they help, surely some evidence of that would be in the data, right? Since I’m a resident of the eastern part of the state, I decided to run the numbers myself. When I first started getting the data together, I didn’t know entirely what to expect. If there was a sharp difference showing masked counties doing better than unmasked ones, it would be a truth I would have to report, even if it went against my preconceived (in this case anti-mask) notions…

Over the allotted period, counties with mask mandates saw 4.7% of their population infected while those without them saw a 4.6% infection rate. Interestingly, Hawkins County, which let its mandate expire at the end of September, had 4.3% of its population infected, while Carter County had 5.1% infected with a mandate in place. Both have nearly identical populations…

If mask mandates worked as our overlords insist they do, does not logic demand that the raw numbers would show it at least a little? If this data were in the pro-maskers’ favor, wouldn’t it have already been on the front page of The New York Times?

When you combine this Tennessee data with Rational Ground’s data from Florida and masked vs unmasked states nationwide, the picture is increasingly clear. It’s time to face the fact that mask mandates DO NOT WORK to stop or even slow the spread of COVID-19. — Scott Morefield

Nowhere in the Constitution does it say, all this can be suspended if there is a bad disease. We have lived through typhus, cholera, smallpox, HIV, tuberculosis, polio, the Spanish flu. We’ve lived through an attack on our soil. Never have there been months and months and months of emergency powers when we weren’t actually fighting a war. So this is completely unprecedented. Lockdowns have never been done before in free societies. And really, we are turning into a version of totalitarian states before everyone’s eyes. And I really hope, you know, we wake up quickly, because history also shows that it’s a small window in which people can fight back before it’s too dangerous to fight back. – Naomi Wolf, liberal

    1. Thanks for the great example of how to lie with statistics. Population is irrelevant. It is population density that matters. Rural counties with small towns and fewer bars/eateries are going to have far lower rates than urban counties with large cities.

Hawkins County has a population density of 113.6/sq mi. Carter County has a population density of 164.8 per square mile. And I have to assume that these two were picked because they are the extreme outliers. Within the margin of error, you are saying the rates were similar/identical in the two counties. But the one with the mask mandate has FIFTY PERCENT MORE POPULATION DENSITY. It’s clear that the mask mandate ensured that cases didn’t take off there exponentially.

I can’t get over anti-maskers. MASKS WORK – doctors and nurses wear them all the time before this pandemic or not BECAUSE THEY WORK. If they didn’t work, healthcare workers wouldn’t use them. Masks are not some giant intrusion on your liberty compared to seat belts or no shoes/no shirt/no service.

      1. Classic case of confusing correlation with causation. The counties with low rates were not low because they had no mask ordinance. They had no mask ordinance because they had low rates. In a state with rather small counties, people who test positive in a masked county might have been exposed in a nearby mask-free county where the bars and restaurants are open. The study also ignores any differences between counties where the ordinance is enforced and has high compliance and counties where there is no enforcement and low compliance.

        1. Only an abject moron would sit there like a potted pansy accepting a pandemic police state for citizens while illegal aliens with COVID go free to roam the country spreading COVID.

Oh, by the way, fuuuuuuuuuuck you and your ilk, moron.

108 illegal aliens in Texas who tested positive for COVID released into the country

More than 100 illegal aliens who tested positive for the coronavirus — after their arrival in Texas since late January — have been released by the Border Patrol into the Lone Star State and are free to travel to other parts of the US, according to reports.

The illegal aliens who tested positive are told to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines to quarantine and maintain social distance, but that Brownsville doesn’t have the authority to stop them from traveling to the rest of the country.

108 positives account for 6.3 percent of the total illegal aliens who received rapid tests at the city’s main bus terminal, a program that began on Jan. 25.

Some of the illegal aliens described to Noticias Telemundo Investiga how they were tested at the border and then allowed to hit the streets despite a positive result for the coronavirus. Illegal aliens who tested positive said they plan to travel to North Carolina, Maryland, and New Jersey.

        2. As the article notes, the positive test rate among noncitizen entrants in Brownsville was 6.3%. The rate for recently tested American citizen residents of Cameron County is 13.4%. The released individuals constitute 108 out of 38,566 individuals in the county who have tested positive. Compared to the overall danger to homeland security from the virus, this is not a monumental issue.

Those presenting for admission at a port of entry, including all those seeking asylum, are tested in Mexico and never cross the border if positive. They are tested again before they are released from ICE custody. Those with positive tests who crossed elsewhere, and are individuals or in family groups with no child under 13, are immediately denied entry and sent back to Mexico. Most other adults are detained after unauthorized entry and kept in segregated quarantine for 14 days with frequent testing. Unaccompanied minors who test positive are isolated from other minors while being detained until release to an authorized adult.

The only noncitizens with positive tests who are being released are those in asylum-seeking family groups including children because there is no place else for them. There are judicial orders forbidding family division and requiring their release. There is no lawful basis for ignoring those orders on the grounds of coronavirus status. The Federal Government cannot hold them just because Greg Abbott or Joe Biden says to, any more than a Texas citizen can be locked up because he tests positive. This is yet another “unfortunate” consequence of living in a constitutional republic rather than a dictatorship.

Those individuals are being encouraged to stay in Brownsville, isolated in motel accommodations until they test negative, but if they insist on leaving there is no legal way to hold them. They are told to self-isolate and given instructions on social distancing and masking, but that isn’t keeping them from riding out of town on a bus. The health implications of this are bad, but not even remotely as bad as dropping all the mandatory public health measures protecting 29 million Texans (only 2.7 million of whom have had the virus, with another 2.2 million fully vaccinated). Blowing smoke about this is just an effort to distract attention from the fact that nearly everybody in the state was in danger of freezing in the dark just two weeks ago.

  2. Congrats, Mississippians! Only 43 of you died of COVID yesterday, for a total of 6724. If that keeps up, you could lose your status as fifth-highest mortality state overall. The rest of the country is catching up. The case numbers are up over 2% in the last week.

    1. Go peddle your COVID fear porn to other snowflake betas, you totalitarian wannabe.

Why did Mississippi have the fifth-highest COVID mortality number?

Mississippi consistently ranks among the top U.S. states for smoking, obesity, and diabetes.

Now you know the rest of the story.

      1. I believe that Mr. Reeves was elected Governor of Mississippi, not Colorado, so a healthy lifestyle is not a requirement for residence. If he knows that his state has a high incidence of preexisting conditions, he is supposed to take that into account when making decisions that affect their health.

Obese individuals pay taxes and vote like everybody else. They are not subject to a constitutional provision that makes them second-class citizens or denies them equal protection by the government. In Mississippi, COVID deaths are highly correlated to poverty, but not particularly to race, so the Governor is putting even more Republicans than Democrats at risk.

        1. Our border is now totally out of control thanks to the disastrous leadership of Joe Biden. Our great Border Patrol and ICE agents have been disrespected, demeaned, and mocked by the Biden Administration. A mass incursion into the country by people who should not be here is happening on an hourly basis, getting worse by the minute. Many have criminal records, and many others have and are spreading covid. Interior enforcement has been shut down—criminals that were once promptly removed by our Administration are now being released back onto the street to commit heinous and violent crimes. ICE officers are desperate to remove these convicted criminals, but Biden won’t let them.

The spiraling tsunami at the border is overwhelming local communities, depleting budgets, crowding hospitals, and taking jobs from legal American workers. When I left office, we had achieved the most secure border in our country’s history. Under Biden, it will soon be worse, more dangerous, and more out of control than ever before. He has violated his oath of office to uphold our Constitution and enforce our laws.

There has never been a time on our southern border like what is happening now but more importantly, what is about to happen. Now that Biden has implemented nationwide Catch-and-Release, illegal immigrants from every corner of the Earth will descend upon our border and never be returned. You can never have a secure border unless people who cross illegally are promptly removed.

I had a great relationship with Mexico, and its wonderful president, but all of that has been dissipated by the gross incompetence and radicalism of the people currently in charge. The Remain in Mexico Policy was incredible, but immediately abandoned by Biden, probably because it worked so well. Likewise, our Safe Third Agreements in Central America were extraordinarily successful, so Biden foolishly ditched them too. We stopped payment of the hundreds of millions of dollars paid to them and then developed an excellent relationship that made our country and their countries more secure. We put in place powerful rules and procedures to stop the smuggling and trafficking, but the Biden Administration has abandoned these proven strategies and instead given the smugglers and traffickers effective control of our border.

Despite being delayed by years of litigation and politics by the democrats, the wall is almost finished and can be quickly completed. Doing so will save thousands of lives.

The Biden Administration must act immediately to end the border nightmare that they have unleashed onto our Nation. Keep illegal immigration, crime, and the China Virus out of our country!

President Donald Trump, March 5, 2021

        2. “he is supposed to take that into account when making decisions that affect their health.”

Says who? In a free society, the residents of that free society should be making the decisions that affect their health, not some bureaucrat.

Reading these posts makes me forever grateful that I somehow escaped the liberal mindset.

        3. “All” citizens? Nothing of the sort. Covid is not under every rock and behind every tree and it all depends. But only Leftists think so and speak in absolutes. The citizens will be just fine and freedom is growing. No thanks to you fear monger. Obviously you will not get a grip anytime soon, so just hide in fear in your OPEN Red State basement (if you have one) and binge watch CNN…

        4. For once I agree with you, GeoB. “Covid is not under every rock and behind every tree.” Exactly true.

It is in the breath of the man who is crowded close behind me in a checkout line. You know, the guy who isn’t wearing a mask now because the Governor says he doesn’t have to and the store does not have enough security officers to keep him out. The guy who won’t stay more than two feet away from the other customers. The guy who averages three hours a night in a crowded bar with poor ventilation, patrons singing along with the music, and not a single soul who is wearing a mask… all now perfectly lawful. Neither he nor any of the bar patrons have been vaccinated, because Texas has the lowest vaccination rate in the country and the same guys who don’t believe in masks or avoiding close contact with strangers don’t believe in vaccines.

I have a lot more risk in that situation than Greg Abbott did in 1984 when he went jogging in the richest neighborhood of Houston. A tree limb fell on him, because even very low risks are not no risks. One difference is that I won’t be able to sue anybody over my perfectly foreseeable losses. The Governor got $6 million. The guy who infects me will see no consequences. Neither will the bar owner or state government who made it possible.

Since you seem not to have noticed millions of sick and grieving Americans all around you, I can only point out that those citizens will not be “just fine.” For those in the grave or long-term medical care, it is not true that “freedom is growing.” Many of them took every precaution they reasonably could, but they could not protect themselves from the new style of American selfishness that you and your buddies have been exemplifying here for over a year.

        5. TxLiar posted: “For once I agree with you, GeoB. “Covid is not under every rock and behind every tree.” Exactly true.”

Ahem, ahhhh, that’s called a metaphor, dummy. Spare me the condescending mocking baloney.

BTW, could not call less about governors of pot smoking states that don’t care about their own health, so why would they care about Covid.

“For those in the grave or long-term medical care, it is not true that “freedom is growing.” Obviously. So what, bleeding heart what’s your point? These people are among us everyday and everywhere for hundreds of years

Only a partisan Leftist like you would POLITICIZE it for power and party gain. Because that’s all you KNOW. Nuff said…

        6. Would you like to explain that off-the-wall comment about pot-smoking states? That’s illegal in Texas and Mississippi isn’t exactly a drug haven, either.

        7. The deadly pathogens around here are called TxLuser, Applecyndiq and John Dungler, LA Artiste. Three peas in a pod, all in a circle jerk

        8. Oh, the opiniated leftist know it all knows more about Mississippi citizens, class, science related to Covid in the state than the Governor and breaks down RISK to people by voting rolls? So you want more Republicans to die, correct? You are despicable…

        9. No, I do not want Republicans to die. I was just pointing out that the Governor of Mississippi will be killing more Republicans than Democrats because that is the breakdown in his state. In Texas, the death toll will be higher among Democrats because that is where most of our deaths have been.

        10. “I was just pointing out that the Governor of Mississippi will be killing more Republicans than Democrats”

You are full of yourself as usual. You know NOTHING of the future and your biased opinion is WORTHLESS…

      2. Thanks for the “rest of the story,” puts it all in context. It’s easy to cherry pick statistics to paint a different picture. The leftists are masters of the practice.

“Go peddle your COVID fear porn to other snowflake betas, you totalitarian wannabe.”

That sums up TxFear perfectly and originally in one succinct sentence. Could not have said it better. Awesome and well done!

Yes indeed, land of the free and home of the brave. Unless you live in a locked down totalitarian blue state…

        1. Yesterday, 2369 Americans died and 66,714 were newly diagnosed with COVID-19. In the last year, there have been 28.3 million cases, a sizable percentage of which have caused long term medical issues. 518,000+ have died, leaving grieving family members and friends behind.

          Those are not cherry-picked statistics.

        2. Cry me a river Mr. Obsession with Covid deaths. Like Governor Cuomo famously said, “people die” from Covid.

If you haven’t noticed, Trump is out of office for 45 days. With three vaccines developed under President Trump’s project “Warp Speed,” bitch about Biden little girl…

    2. You should move to New York. You’d fit right in.

For the first time ever, people are fleeing New York by the millions. Plagued by high taxes, big government, excessive regulations, and other obstacles to liberty, there are few reasons for one to want to remain in the state under Governor Andrew Cuomo’s leadership. And in New York City, which houses nearly half of the state’s population, Mayor Bill de Blasio has been doing everything in his power to accelerate the decline and bring the city back to its pre-Rudy-Giuliani days. — Matt Palumbo, Dumb and Dumber: How Cuomo and de Blasio Ruined New York

      https://books.apple.com/us/audiobook/dumb-dumber-how-cuomo-blasio-ruined-new-york-unabridged/id1547850558

    3. Speaking of case numbers, TXUSER is a living example of the fact that 100% of Democrats are infected with “cases” of mental derangement. He is obsessed with demonstrating is pure ignorance and cult derangement. It is good we have people like TXUSER so we can all feel better about ourselves. Still, I donate to the TX Mental Defective Association to try to help him. They said he is their only resident who asks for the white coat with the sleeves that lace up and the electric shock sessions. At least he’s trying.

        1. Jose, your keyboard skills are quite evident and ahh, remarkable.

I suggest getting out of the basement and market those skills to the Jr High tech club. Someone there likely would find amusement.

        2. Beyond hysterical, Hal! The Number One Lie around here for over five years. Personal experience I have encountered the same arrogant condescending leftist elitists from my days working in D.C. for 12 years, Ground Zero for this ilk. They are out of touch with reality and brain dead. Fairness and honesty are not in their playbook and they continue to worship at the altar of Democrat Dogma.

          Pity the poor fools…

        3. I voted in Republican primaries in Texas from 1968 to 2018. That made me a Republican, however ashamed I might be of what the party has become. I am not particularly fond of the Democratic Party, but at least they aren’t promoting discrimination and death.

        4. WHAT!

“At least they aren’t promoting discrimination.”

Stay on track Mr Obfuscation and Conflation and please answer the question per the ONE world I listed and relate it to ID Politics, CRT, BLM and other “make it fair” racial policies.

If there was ever obvious and blatant discrimination (observable in my life time) that’s obscured and rationalized with perverted fairness, it’s happening today as a result of D policies.

I write this obviously, because of my white privilege blindness. Sorry, my maleness may play a part too. Sorry, I forgot…I was able to obtain advance education b/c of the same privilege. I’m sorry for it ALL…even the things I’m not aware of.

          I just knelt and bowed.

        5. I don’t believe you, got it?

Their are political PLANTS in every party and every White House and administration going back hundreds of years. I could easily see you fitting that role quite well.

“not particularly fond of the Democratic Party, but at least they aren’t promoting discrimination and death.”

Lying again and wrong on BOTH counts. Depending on the day you either promote or look the other way on political correctness, cancel culture, SJW Cook, CCP Party in China, defend Hillary, defend AOC and you call that Republican? ROTFL!

The Democrat Party is the most discriminatory in history. Treatment of blacks in the South in the 1960s (Republican Lincoln freed the slaves), Robert Byrd, Antifa mobs assaulting anyone wearing a MAGA hat, BLM burning down cities and assaulting police and getting in the face of whites. How clueless can you be?

Tell us how President Trump working with Project Warp Speed developed three vaccines in RECORD time, administered more than a million vaccines to citizens before Biden was sworn in office promoting death?

Tell us how Republican governors following science and numbers in their states, not liberal fraud Fauci science, are promoting death?

Bottom Line: Republican Governors are the trail blazers to open their states effectively embarrassing Democrat governors who are f*ckin clueless and only interested in power and control, not the safety of their citizens and children back in schools. Nursery home deaths in New York and Pennsylvania for example, did not happen n Florida.

Republican governors STAND for FREEDOM and no matter where you live, every time you travel you are at risk, mask (60% EFFECTIVE) or no mask. That’s the way it is and you don’t like it as a Democrat losing control. Tough fear monger…

      1. Funny and ACCURATE.

Not only obsessed with “cult derangement” and pure “ignorance,” USER is partisan brain dead and the champion of political hypocrisy and double standards. I’ll donate to a white coat that is totally secure and not so fashionable and a mask he cannot take off while receiving treatment…

    4. Mr Duplicity…either the numbers point to the longstanding and ineffective protocol, or not.

But you introduce the MS deaths as a measure of fear for changing the protocol, when in fact, it points to the ineffectiveness of measures up to the day the mandate was removed.

      1. When you are talking about taking measures to reduce death rates, death rates are relevant as more than just a “measure of fear.”

The death toll in Mississippi and Texas was rising rapidly last Spring. Lockdowns (often instituted by local communities over state government opposition) reversed the trend. Then social distancing measures were dropped as the state governments reasserted control. There was a huge spike in the late Fall, almost swamping the medical system. Even the recalcitrant governors understood the need to reinstitute social distancing measures. Rates fell again. That tells us that the measures were effective.

Rates have started creeping back up because of the new virus strains in circulation and because compliance with distancing is suffering from fatigue. The response was to drop mandatory public health measures entirely. Experience tells us that we will see a third spike in cases. That spike will constitute a breeding ground for even more virulent strains. The return to maskless crowding will also provide an opening for influenza, which has been almost entirely absent this flu season.

      2. But you introduce the MS deaths as a measure of fear for changing the protocol, when in fact, it points to the ineffectiveness of measures up to the day the mandate was removed.”

Measure of FEAR is what the Democrats like TxUseless employ daily to maintain a grasp on their power and control over citizens. Feel sorry for the Blue State denizens, meanwhile the Red States have figured out what clueless Democrats are incapable of out fear. Republicans trust citizens to do the right thing in an imperfect world while Democrats only see people who are stupid children and need them to be controlled.

And that’s, the rest of the story…

      1. Don’t be. A life unlived isn’t worth living. Life is a gift, it’d meant to be LIVED. Not spent cowering in fear.

Let’s knock the speed limit down to 10 miles an hour… make cars out of rubber… make everybody wear a helmet. Cars are a lot safer in the driveway… ships a lot safer when they don’t leave harbor, and people are safer when they sit quietly in their basements, but that’s not why cars, ships and people are on the planet.

The ones who really get it done — they’re not out there talking about safety first. They know that other things come first… — Mike Rowe

Mike Rowe says that COVID rules had a huge unintended consequence: They crushed work, sapping meaning from many people’s lives.

Rowe says that lockdowns and business closures meant to save lives also take lives.

Domestic violence is up. So are calls to suicide hotlines.

Unemployment kills. A National Bureau for Economic Research study finds that “890,000 additional deaths may result over the next 15 years from actions taken to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

That’s one of many unintended consequence from a “safety first” mindset.

“The goal of living is not to merely stay alive. Cars are a lot safer in the driveway. Ships are a lot safer when they don’t leave harbor, and people are a lot safer during a pandemic when they sit quietly in their basements, waiting for the all clear, but that that’s not why cars, ships and people are on the planet!”

The video below has more of Rowe’s points, including starting with the arrogance of politicians decreeing which workers are “essential.”

        1. Yep, we all need to be bubble-wrapped and drive rubber cars with all left turns abolished.

D’s mindset; again trying to do the impossible…taking all risk, pain, hardship, stress, embarrassment, etc., out of life and mandating all follow their program.

Life is tough, dangerous at times and full of uncertainty and challenge. The blankie and binkie need to be jettisoned at some point.

      2. “Afraid of death”…necessarily means one’s life is being tainted by that inevitable reality.

We all face it, but to be ruled by it, day-to-day, kind of seems like fear to me.

    1. Just imagine where we’d be if fear was the dominant factor guiding a human’s day.

Advances, progress, achievement…say nothing of human exhilaration, pleasure, and the acute sense of LIVING would be known superficially, IF fear was the dominant impetus.

Does this mean people need to live like Alex Honnold per the Virus? No, but weak-kneed and cowering on the periphery with 3 masks, or walking outside and masked while no one is around is simply nutty. There are plenty of other examples out there. VDS is an apropos acronym.

If one is in the “risk” zone, live accordingly…it’s mainly your responsibility. The rest of the World, outside of having respect for others, doesn’t need to modify carte-blanche per your situ.

Living is inextricably linked to risk and risk increases with “fullness.” Take your pick.

      1. You do, you must, know that conservatives like you have been opposed to every new human endeavor in history.
I remember the one about the guy that invented the wheel, his conservative neighbor on the next cave said to him, why are you creating that thing? The government will tax you for it.
Thank you for the guy with the wheel. Fu@k off the neighbor.
Jajajajajajaja….(laughing in Spanish for you silly ones).

  3. “Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced on Tuesday that he’s lifting all state-imposed mask mandates across the state and removing COVID-19 related restrictions on business operations.”

    Stupid is as stupid does…

  4. Interesting to me that you, young fu@k heads, do not know that before 1970 you could not travel anywhere in the world without your vaccination booklet. Forgot that one morons?
That to come to the US, Europe, anywhere on the planet, you had to show your TB negative test, smallpox vaccine, and many others, etc….i bet you fools would be bitching about those vaccines too.
    Typical american morons.

  5. Mississippi and Texas decided not enough of their citizens have been killed. It is not my freedom to kill others by my actions or negligence. We can get this under control and save lives now that we have a competent administration distributing vaccines and listening to the science. Wear a mask, keep your distance, don’t do indoor dining for the next few months and we can save thousands of lives.

  6. Conservatives are soooooo such easily triggered consnowflakes. Wanna pwn ‘em?

    Just say mask. LOL

EVEN the ones that are doctors and nurses working in ICU by this point will go into a blind rage!
