Apple ups Developer Transition Kit Mac mini return credit to $500 after developer complaints

Prior to the release of the M1 Macs, Apple offered developers a $500 Developer Transition Kit (DTK) that included a Mac mini equipped with an A12Z Bionic chip. The DTKs were available on a temporary basis, and earlier this week, Apple said that it would soon begin asking developers to return the Mac minis in exchange for a $200 credit leading, predictably, to complaints from developers.

Juli Clover for MacRumors:

Since developers shelled out $500, many were unhappy with the credit amount, which also required the funds to be used by the end of May. Many developers complained about Apple’s credit amount and the time limit on spending, as the end of May would not allow the credit to be used toward a product released later in 2021.

Apple has now reversed course and upped the credit, and will now be providing developers with $500 to put toward an ‌M1‌ Mac or any other Apple product. The time limit to spend the credit has also been increased, with Apple giving developers until the end of the year to use it.

MacDailyNews Take: Message heard loud and clear:

Apple’s note to developers:

We heard your feedback regarding the 200 USD appreciation credit mentioned in our last email. Our intention was to recognize the tremendous effort that you have put into creating amazing universal apps. By partnering with us early, you showed your commitment to our platform and a willingness to be trailblazers.

So instead of the 200 USD credit that expires in May, we are giving you a 500 USD Apple credit and extending the time you can use it to get a new ‌M1‌ Mac through the end of the year. If you already purchased a new ‌M1‌ Mac, the Apple credit gives you the flexibility to purchase any Apple product to help with your app development work.

We’ll share details soon about how to ship the Developer Transition Kit (DTK) back to Apple. Note that the DTK will no longer receive publicly available software updates after macOS Big Sur 11.2. We encourage you to return it as soon as possible so that your development work is not interrupted. And once you return the DTK, you’ll receive your Apple credit.

  1. You should see the cheap coffee and croissants they serve at their shareholder meetings, this is no surprise, Tim is happy to not have to even spend a penny on the plebes this year.

    1. Well Nick, you and I know we regularly get down voted around here for speaking objective truth. Like we care and you would think voters would pick up on it by now, but hey they continue to waste time knocking themselves out. 🙄

Yes, it’s obvious the minions that work for Cook are programmed bean counters to squeeze every penny out of not only developers, but customers as well. Recent example, no headphones and charging bricks with the latest iPhones.

This decision to offer a paltry rebate of $200 to coveted developers making Apple billions is now the latest SHAMEFUL example of Cook’s corporate greed. Luckily, the power of the people resulted in an embarrassing reversal, now growing typical under balance sheet Cook.

Bottom Line: Like mega rich BIG BUSINESS Apple doesn’t have enough money. Hey Biden, is Apple paying their fair share of taxes? Answer yes, they are a big donor and don’t have an R after their name…

      1. Based on feedback, Apple changed their policy. And they’re still the bad guy? Seems like nowadays, the best thing to do in any situation is stick by your decisions no matter what, and just blame somebody else.

        1. No, they should never have offered only $200. It made it easy to embarrass them. I didn’t buy a kit but would have been outraged for only $200 credit too. Returning the kits SAVES Apple money to not have to continue to update the special OS version. I get why they charged in the first place, no problem with it but if they don’t want to continue to support it, then the credit offered should have been $400 and then no public issue, not worth complaining about. Apple has some of the best margins, so the $200 credit originally offered was really $140 and a forced purchase of a computer

        2. How clueless can you be? They went beancounter CHEAP and only after an onslaught of criticism they reversed course and did the right thing. Great to see another greedy corporation get slapped and sheepishly dragged to the finish line. Your post is yet another Apple Apologist take…

        3. Ferrari is another greedy corporation. I’d like to use one of their cars for nine months and they want to charge me for it. They’re so rich they can afford it, so what’s the big deal? I thought the Constitution requires Apple and other large corporations like Ferrari to let me do whatever I please. What’s mine is mine and what’s theirs is mine too. If they don’t help me do whatever I like and insist on using their own private property to promote their own message, rather than mine, it is just like the Holocaust. After all, my hurt feelings are as big a tragedy as twelve million murders. So where’s my free Ferrari? /s

          Snowflake socialists! Not /s.

  2. The DTK boxes are going to be incompatible with any Apple Sillicon OS after 11.2. Apple needs to get them out of circulation so there won’t be any hardware out there that cannot run either current Intel or M1 software. They don’t want developers limiting themselves to features that run on the DTK subset of Apple Silicon, or, worse, to write code that will not run on the M1 at all.

They consequently asked the developers to send back the development kits that they have been using for months and trade them for production M1 systems. As an inducement, they offered them a credit towards the new system. The developers thought a $200 credit was insufficient, because allowing them a seven-month head start on writing and testing Universal code wasn’t worth $300 to them. Who are the cheapskates in this picture?

Apple has folded, so all the developers will have had the use of a state-of-the-art Mac for seven months for free. Yet Tim Cook still gets criticized. Why am I not surprised?

    1. If Tim Cook can throw away hundreds of millions of share holders money on his liberal agendas then I don’t think this should be considered out of line. The developers actually make money for Apple unlike the recipients of his unethical cash grabs.

      1. How is fostering education for future developers in any way a “cash grab”? Also, it’s Apple’s money, shareholders have stock representative of a minuscule interest ownership in the company’s future market performance. I bet you don’t even have any shares of APPL stock.

        1. For some of the regular posters here, giving money away is a “cash grab,” just like a lawsuit over European Union tax policy that has no actual money in play is a “tax grab.” It probably comes from the claim by their role model that he could grab women by the (genitals) and they won’t complain… except for the 26 women who actually have complained. Words simply have no meaning anymore in this post-modern world that denies the very concept of objective truth.

        2. Here we go again.

The greatest economic and unprecedented presidential race winner of ALL TIME — President Trump is still living RENT FREE in your head.

Suspect you’re still jealous he joked about women with the guys, no proof or facts I have seen and also because he had an alpha male talent for dating beautiful women. You’ll never get over it, good.

Your hypocrisy and double standards are easily evident in nearly every post, cite the gold standard example: I have never read ONE WORD of snidely mocking President Clinton.

The undisputed all time PRESIDENTIAL CHAMP sexual predator, philanderer, extramarital affairs for decades, sex with an intern in the workplace then LYING to the world with a wagging finger on TV. Also, let’s not forget multiple lawsuits for sexual harassment and rape. One case Bill settled for nearly a million dollars did not save him from being disbarred losing his law license for lying to investigators. If you think for a nanosecond the Don is much, much worse than Bill, you definitely need a shrink and therapist, pronto!

Which brings me to my BROADER point. I have never consistently read such an ingrained lack of aself awareness and inability to weigh FAIRNESS and REALITY when it comes to politics.

I certainly understand the arrogance of elitist progressive know it alls, particularly your hero AOC that you defended repeatedly, both of the same ilk of academic stupidity, hate and stereotyping those that do not believe as you do.

I don’t expect you to understand “objective truth”, just too difficult for blind dogmatic elitists…

        3. Yet another illustration that facts no longer matter for you lot. I have never defended Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is a Republican obsession, not mine. The only time I can remember mentioning her here was after The Ex-President told her and several other predictably female members of Congress to “go back where they came from.” I pointed out that where she came from was New York City, just like him. Unlike him, both her parents and all four of her grandparents were born as US citizens, too. Of course, that doesn’t matter to those who think that all “real Americans” are white.

Similarly, I have never defended Bill Clinton’s sexual predation. I didn’t need to, because the man has been out of office for twenty years and is irrelevant. Trump could run for office again, so his sexual offenses are very relevant. You aren’t looking if you haven’t seen that there is as much evidence in his 26 cases as in most of Clinton’s. The major difference from Clinton is that Trump’s alleged crimes are part of a pervasive pattern of misogyny.

It is not surprising that you choose to ignore that pattern. You are the one who defended Bill Cosby as a victim of liberal hypocrisy. You are the one who thinks that “dating beautiful women” is admirable in a married man. You are the one who thinks that bragging about sexual assault is just “joking with the guys.” I suppose you think that Jews are overly sensitive to Holocaust jokes, too.

He lost. Get over it. Talk about Apple Development Transition Kits instead.

        4. Txer: “Yet another illustration that facts no longer matter you lot”

TxLIAR. There, I fixed it for you.

“I have never defended Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is a Republican obsession, not mine.”

You LIE REPEATEDLY and next time I will be sure to save your specific posts. You defended AOC and supported her in numerous posts.

“Of course, that doesn’t matter to those who think that all “real Americans” are white.”

You are an UNEQUIVOCAL RACIST and have a consistent problem with both black and white races. Blacks you keep down and all whites are racists.

TheoMac memorable takedown on blacks when you keep trying to keep them on the Democrat plantation was the undisputed MDN Gold Standard.

I never mentioned race because I’m color blind, unlike you and the rest of your stereotypical Democrat ilk that constantly draws race like a gun in every argument 🐂💩.

“Similarly, I have never defended Bill Clinton’s sexual predation.”

Read my post below deflection specialist, I never said you defended Clinton:

“The undisputed all time PRESIDENTIAL CHAMP sexual predator, philanderer, extramarital affairs for decades, sex with an intern in the workplace then LYING to the world with a wagging finger on TV. Also, let’s not forget multiple lawsuits for sexual harassment and rape. One case Bill settled for nearly a million dollars did not save him from being disbarred losing his law license for lying to investigators. If you think for a nanosecond the Don is much, much worse than Bill, you definitely need a shrink and therapist, pronto!”

My main two points hypocrite one:

1~ Clinton was far worse it’s not even a close comparison and Don was out of his league by comparison.

2~ TxDemocrat NEVER acknowledged the Clinton sexual crimes, NOT ONCE.

Yet you continue to mock Don living rent free in your head and REFUSE to condemn Clinton because he is a Democrat. Easily I call hypocrisy and DOUBLE STANDARD.

“Trump could run for office again, so his sexual offenses are very relevant.”

Exactly what you and the Democrat Party are most afraid of with the second unconstitutional joke of another FALSE impeachment that miserably failed. Well you should be very AFRAID.

“The major difference from Clinton is that Trump’s alleged crimes are part of a pervasive pattern of misogyny.”

So that is your excuse for DOZENS of Clinton accusations of sexual harassment, rape, sex with interns and settling out of court with Paula Jones after repeated harassment. Just a nice “pervasive pattern of misogyny.” Obviously you choose to EXCUSE, minimize and ignore the criminal pattern, because he is a Democrat. I do not.

“You are the one who defended Bill Cosby as a victim of liberal hypocrisy.” Yes, plenty of liberal hypocrisy to go around. Specifically, sexual harassment applies only to Republicans and vigorously investigated in the Senate and media, just ask Justice Kavanaugh. Then dropped like a hot potato and ignored by the media when it applies to Biden and Cuomo. Cosby case justice was served.

You are the one who thinks that “dating beautiful women” is admirable in a married man.” Not me, ask Clinton.

“the one who thinks that bragging about sexual assault is just “joking with the guys.”

You don’t know what I think, so stop projecting and posting LIES. No, “the one” who acknowledges said sexual assault was not proven or convicted in court and yes, it is a very big joke.

“I suppose you think that Jews are overly sensitive to Holocaust jokes, too.

AGAIN, POS you don’t know what I think, so stop projecting and posting LIES.

“He lost.” Yeah, right. Looks like it was stolen in the middle of the night mining votes from suitcases and took weeks for five close swing states to complete the dirty deed. Dozens of cases were filed in courts and dismissed outright without being heard.

Yes indeed, moving on. Trump 2024!…🇺🇸😍

      2. Yes, Cook has been throwing millions on many liberal darling causes. The result were the objectives fulfilled, who knows. Throw money at a problem and turn a blind eye to accounting and success, the bleeding heart Democrat way going back to the late 1960s and the Great Society.

Outside magazine in the 1990s published a cover story on rating the top 50 environmental groups if I remember number correctly. In the top 10 most were spending 501C donations 75%-90% on expenses, not on the cause.

Prompted the editors of the liberal magazine to write these groups do not need your money. That kind of objective journalism, sadly is non-existent today…
