Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) is set to star in and executive produce the drama series Lessons in Chemistry, which has landed a straight-to-series order at Apple in a competitive situation, Variety reports.
Susannah Grant, who was previously nominated for an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for Erin Brockovich, will write and executive produce the series. Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan will also executive produce under their Aggregate Films banner…
The series is based on the upcoming debut novel from author, science editor, and copywriter Bonnie Garmus. Set in the early 1960s, Lessons in Chemistry follows Elizabeth Zott (Larson), whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a society deeming that women belong in the domestic sphere, not the professional one. When Elizabeth finds herself pregnant, alone and fired from her lab, she musters the ingenuity only a single mother has. She accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives – and the men who are suddenly listening – a lot more than recipes, all the while craving a return to her true love: science.

A movie with a female central character is not sexist. It is not sexist for the actor playing that character to make sure that the reporters invited to interview her on the movie’s press tour include more than just white males. No white reporter was harmed by being forced to sit next to a black or female colleague at a presser.

Ms. Larson requested that the audience at her publicity appearances be composed of more than just white males. She did not ask that the men be disinvited or fired, only that women and persons of color should also be invited. Likewise, she never suggested that there should be no white male lead actors or directors, only that there be a balance of additional voices. As I said, no critic was harmed by being forced to sit next to a female, black, or hispanic critic at a presser. It isn’t catching.
How many times do you see something like this in a movie review: “The performance of X in this film rang true to my experience as a young person struggling to find his identity?” Well, the experience of a person struggling to find his identity as a woman or poor black is different from that of a private-school boy from a wealthy suburb (not better, not worse, but different). I’m not saying that the white critic cannot imagine that experience. The actor and director are being paid to help him imagine it. But—and this is a big but—the critic’s experience of the film, and thus his review, is going to be colored by his experience. If his experience is dramatically different not only from that of the cast but also from that of the audience that can be expected to see the film, the reliability of the review will be affected.
If the audience for a film exactly reflects the adult population of the US, the majority are female. For a film with a female lead, the percentage is even higher. That majority is entitled to have access to reviews and interviews that were conducted by people who share the gendered aspects of their their life experience, as well as by those who do not. That is not going to happen if only white male critics are invited to publicity events for the film.
Again, it is not “doing the same thing to a new group of people” to ask that white male leading actors, directors, and critics share the spotlight with others. There is room in the tent (or at the press conference) for everyone.
