Sareena Dayaram for CNET:

In an unprecedented move, Tencent Video, Weibo, iQiyi and Bilibili canceled their original plans to carry the livestream, though Apple fans could watch it directly on the company’s website… Weibo is a Chinese microblogging site often compared to Twitter, even though the Chinese government maintains strict control over what appears on any China-based media or internet site.

The cancellation comes at a time of tense geopolitical relations between Washington and Beijing, and it underscores the challenges Apple faces in making further inroads in the crucial mainland China market.

This week’s cancellation marks the first time that China’s video platforms have jointly canceled an iPhone livestream since they began airing them several years ago. The events generate tremendous interest in China, which is Apple’s third largest market by sales, and the word “iPhone 12” has been a trending topic on Weibo.

MacDailyNews Take: When social media and other media platforms conspire to try to hide something, it only heightens interest. Apple’s iPhone 12 family will benefit from even more intense interest that due to the Streisand effect induced by Chinese censorship.

  1. Oblivious CCP directed the media censor to protect the China based phone makers. The need to hide the fact that Apple is the originally gangster in phone design. Now with a blackout the CCp supported companies can freely copy apples marketing swagger and sale it to the captives behind the great firewall that the culture and innovation is from China, when in reality the CCP companies just copy Apple.

Check out Hawei site, such an embarrassing ripe off of Apple. Minus the culture diversity. CCP marketing is all white Europeans and while Asians on there international site. Where is the cancel culture.
CCP dose not want their population to see people of color and ethnicity viewed in a popular light.

  2. As long as the CCP doesn’t stop Chinese consumers from buying iPhones, I’m not too concerned. It seems so strange to hide the Apple event from the social media as Foxconn is assembling iPhones by the millions of units. Whatever… I’d get a headache trying to figure out all these crazy moves. I would think even the CCP would be happy to keep cash flowing in China during these pandemic times.

  3. When social media and other media platforms conspire to try to hide something, it only heightens interest in the fact that Joe Biden and his crack addict son peddle influence of the offices entrusted to them by voters to the CCP, Ukrainians, and many others. 🙂
