We remain in a catch-22. We must have an economy and we’re in the midst of a pandemic. Both conditions will exist simultaneously until we have effective treatments and a vaccine, so try to be as safe as you can be – wash your hands frequently, keep your hands away from your face, wear a mask in public, practice social distancing, etc.

There is zero way we get to herd immunity with the healthy population at this rate – I’ll take 15 years at this rate. Soooo bad.
At least the people at my gym are pretty much just living like normal. Lots of younger folks working out, socializing being normal. Good. We actually need to get COVID moving en mass throughout the population ASAP during the summer months.

Again, at-risk and elderly beware and we young bucks be considerate of others and careful how we interact with them. This is not less dangerous for them and no less mom more dangerous for most now.
Herd immunity only kicks in when at least two-thirds of the population has antibodies. After 121,000 deaths in the US, even the most heavily affected areas like New York are only testing in the very low twenties. Wide areas of the country are in the low single digits. Over 10% of the fatalities (and a much higher percentage of hospitalizations) are in people under 55 yoa.
So, to reach herd immunity, at least another 72,000 people under 55 would have to die. There would also be 700,000 older people, but you don’t seem to think that they matter.
If you want to kill yourself, by all means do, but don’t take the rest of us with you.
COVID-19 is going to kill many tens of thousands more regardless, whether you like it or not. Whether it hurts your “feelings” or not.
Those most at risk should take every precaution, of course. Good luck to everyone and may we get to herd immunity and then a vaccine as soon as possible.
99% (99.70% under age 65) of people who contract COVID-19 will get well soon – with 89% of COVID-19 deaths occurring in people with known underlying medical conditions from which many of which they would have died anyway, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer.
Everybody has an underlying condition called mortality from which we will all die. That does not justify intentionally helping the process along, whether with a bullet or a virus.
As of June 19, 121,000 Americans have died, roughly 36.20 per 100,000 population. The observed case fatality rate in the US is 5.4%, not 1%. To reach that figure, I suppose you are assuming that there are 20 people actually infected for every reported case. That assumption is not consistent with the rather low percentage of the population that tests positive for antibodies.
Reaching herd immunity any time soon is literally a fever dream. The only way to save lives is to slow the rate of spread so that the medical system is not over stressed. That requires following appropriate public health advice, not mass gatherings in enclosed spaces.

These days the hospitals are outstanding in terms of prevention. The problem here is that then “healthy” folks don’t see a need for face masks or gloves. The problem is going to get worse on Saturday when Plump Trump does rolling into town with zero protection. That will encourage his supporter in the audience to forget protections.

Other countries have brought the virus under control by swift and competent public health measures. Plenty of younger people are having severe outcomes, we do not know the long term effect of infection, we do not if herd immunity is even possible with this virus, hospital capacity is being stretched to its limits in states with accelerating infections. Look at what NY has achieved. The rate of positive cases as a percentage of those tested is low and declining even as the rate of testing is the highest in the nation. Controlling the virus and reopening is not difficult in principle, test all retail workers prior to opening, have all wear masks and practice rigorous hygiene regimens, retest at least weekly, and require all customers to wear masks except while eating. For everyone else, practice social/physical distancing and wear a mask whenever out of the house. Municipalities should be testing as many people as possible to determine actual infection rates, and when positives found, isolate the individual, contact trace, and test. They should implement the Apple/Google contact tracing to increase control as well. Countries who have done that have brought their infections down to near zero. The Trump administration’s failure to follow the science has and is resulting in the unnecessary deaths of tens of thousands of Americans. It will have killed through willful negligence more people than all terrorist attacks ever committed against the US and immigrant murders combined in US history by many multiples. Tragic.
President Trump saved many thousands of lives by restricting travel from China, the EU, UK, Ireland, Brazil, and Iran slowing the spread of the virus.

Except the virus was already here, plus it was coming from Europe, plus he didn’t even stop ALL travel from China, just Chinese nationals. His inaction didn’t save anyone. In fact, we are (again) the laughingstock of the world in how we’re handling Covid-19.

We didn’t “prevent travel from China.” Roughly 430,000 people—mostly US residents and their families—have entered the US from China after the so-called ban. There were even more before the “ban” but after the Trump Administration was aware of the danger. The US was the 27th country to restrict travel and only acted after almost every international airline had already cancelled its flights from China.
Exactly the same thing happened with the European “ban;” it closed the barn door after it could do any good and, even then, let hundreds of thousands of potentially infected individuals into the country.
You wanted Trump to ban U.S. citizens and their immediate family members from being able to return to their home country?
Of course not, but the entrants should have been effectively quarantined. Instead, anyone with a temperature under 100 was released into a crowded arrivals hall and told to go home by commercial transport. There was a suggestion that they self-quarantine for 14 days, but that was not enforced.
Closing the border only delays the spread of the disease, and only saves lives if you use that delay to better prepare for the virus. Canada did not close it’s border to Chinese travel when the USA did, but didn’t tell its citizens that there was nothing to worry about. Now the USA has 66% more deaths per million. Canada should also have closed to the chinese earlier and could have saved more lives, but because they don’t pretend it’s “just the flu” they still did better than the Americans.
It now appears that the countries that wear masks in public do the best at slowing the curve. Economies can open just about completely with masks, but why wear a mask if it’s “only the flu”?
