President Trump: We won’t close America when second COVID-19 wave hits

President Donald Trump said “we are not closing our country” if the U.S. is hit by a second wave of COVID-19 infections. “People say that’s a very distinct possibility, it’s standard,” Trump said when asked about a second wave during a tour of a Ford factory in Michigan. “We are going to put out the fires. We’re not going to close the country,” Trump said. “We can put out the fires. Whether it is an ember or a flame, we are going to put it out. But we are not closing our country.”

President Trump: We won’t close America when second COVID-19 wave hits

Kevin Breuninger for CNBC:

Trump has previously said there may be “embers” of the pandemic that persist in the U.S. past the summer, but he maintains that they will be stamped out. Health experts, including those in the Trump administration, have said that the virus will likely continue to spread through the fall and winter, and may become even more difficult to combat once flu season begins.

State leaders, not the federal government, have imposed harsh restrictions on residents and businesses to try to slow the spread of the disease. But with the U.S. economy straining under the social distancing rules, Trump has loudly called on the country to begin the reopening process. All 50 states have now begun some level of reopening – including New York, the epicenter of the crisis in the U.S. – even as cases continue to rise in some parts of the country.

Trump is determined to revive the economy as he tries to convince voters to give him four more years in the White House. More than 38 million U.S. workers have filed unemployment claims in the past nine weeks as businesses shuttered amid the pandemic.

But markets have experienced a booming rally this week, amid optimistic news about vaccine development and a growing sense from some public figures that the country has turned a corner in its fight against COVID-19.

  1. Shouldn’t have “closed” it for more than 14 days the first time. You quarantine the vulnerable, not the healthy. Once the curve was flattened, it was time to go back to work while protecting the nursing homes as the Republican governor did in Florida, saving untold numbers of lives, unlike the Democrat governor in New York, who killed thousands with his usual stupidity.

    1. Take it from a New York State resident (upstate, where we’re all Republicans, not in NYC where the crap they voted for is literally killing them), Cuomo is very likely mentally retarded. Hs’s slower than with brother Fredo on CNN (image that). Even his moron dad was smarter than him.

Cuomo, forever lauded by the leftist mainstream media not matter how stupid and dangerous his idiotic whims are, is the knee-jerk genius who unconstitutionally put a seven-bullet limit on gun magazines, criminalizing his own police force! Like I said, Cuomo’s a retard.

Cuomo’s directive forcing nursing homes to readmit residents with the coronavirus was easily one of the worst decisions made by a governor during the COVID-19 pandemic. But Cuomo is too proud to admit as much, even as he reversed that policy this weekend.

More than 5,000 New Yorkers have died in nursing homes. That’s nearly one-fifth of all U.S. nursing home and long-care facility-related deaths, and that number continues to grow by an average of 20 to 25 deaths per day. At least 28,100 residents and workers have died from the coronavirus at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities for older adults in the United States.

At first, Cuomo blamed his 5,000+ nursing home deaths on the families who continued to rely on long-term care facilities: “Now is not the best time to put your mother in a nursing home,” he said last month. “That is a fact.”

When asked why the state wasn’t at least helping nursing homes prepare for outbreaks by providing necessary medical supplies, Cuomo argued that providing aid was “not our job” because nursing homes are privately owned.

Cuomo also blamed the healthcare system for trying to preserve as many hospital beds as possible. Now Cuomo is blaming the nursing homes themselves, arguing that they “could have resisted” taking coronavirus-positive patients if they did not have the ability to care for them. But, again, let’s look at the facts: First, nursing homes were not permitted even to ask whether a patient sent to them by a hospital had been tested for the coronavirus under the March 25 order. Second, the original order did not include the slightest mention of this conditional flexibility, which Cuomo has chalked up as a failure of communication.

Cuomo clearly realized that forcing nursing homes to accept COVID-19 patients was a disastrous decision because he finally revised the policy this weekend. Now, hospitals “cannot discharge a person who is COVID positive to a nursing home,” and they must test every patient they discharge. Only those who test negative can now be referred to nursing homes.

This should have been New York’s policy from the get-go. We might not have known much about COVID-19 when it first broke out in the United States, but one thing we did know is that this virus disproportionately infects and kills the elderly. Instead of shielding the elderly and at-risk from this virus, Cuomo turned nursing homes into breeding grounds, knowingly sending coronavirus patients into these facilities and exposing hundreds of other residents to the virus.

Cuomo needs to take responsibility for this policy and its consequences, rather than engaging in a constant game of finger-pointing and deflection. It was he who approved and implemented this order — the nursing homes, hospitals, and New York families who depend on long-term care facilities had nothing to do with it — and now he must face the death count.

        1. Did you present any information to backup your rant? No. Therefore you must be a lefty.

          You just proved the point:

Republican get mad when you lie to them,
Democrats get mad when you tell the truth.

        2. Yes that is true, because many people intent on overthrowing our government run as Republicans to cover their tracks and are in on it. Look at the John McCain/Mitt Romney ticket. McCain was involved in the fake Dossier, and what side does Mitt Romney fall on these days? Hmmm.

          Connect the dots.

        3. Trump is done he’s panicking the Republican party is panicking and most of all right wing wack jobs like confused are panicking he couldn’t get his rant in with one remark he’s up to like five or six and still spitting up pablum

        4. FYI, that graphic allegedly by Greg Abbot is propaganda, because on a Constitutional basis, ALL States are required to balance their budget.

As such, all that it is really saying is that some states have recognized that declined revenues are going to have a budget shortfall and have already publicly admitted to this.

Those that haven’t are in denial – – and/or are deliberately lying to their citizens.

For Texas specifically, they have a robust ‘rainy day’ fund and a two year budget cycle, so they can use overly optimistic projections for the moment to pretend that they’re not going to have problems … but they’ve already quietly ordered departments to submit plans for a 5% cut. Time will tell if it is enough or fall well short (oil revenues are a big wildcard for TX):

          https://www.texastribune.org/2020/05/20/texas-coronavirus-economy-budget-cuts/

        5. Oh no. You’re graphic is wrong 🙁
First, and I knew this without fact checking you, no state is in debt. They will have a budget deficit for the current fiscal year. Not debt. Just means they have to cut spending so that they don’t actually end the year in debt. Big difference.
Second, well, maybe fact check things before passing that info along. It’s quite simple to do. And it makes you actually smarter to know facts and truth.

          https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/may/26/facebook-posts/facebook-post-gets-debt-wrong-comparison-florida-t/

For instance, Louisiana is supposed to have a $900 million – $1 billion shortfall according to updated budget estimates. They plan on filling those holes with federal funds received. Useful now but the state may need to address future year deficits if the economic recovery drags on.

        6. And by the way, the “morality rate”…
Run the numbers for that graph…just as a fact check…
          California…0.0410%
          Texas…0.0276%
          Florida…0.0424%
          New York…0.0810%

Looks like some numbers aren’t holding up to scrutiny. I’m not even bothering to fact check those numbers against what is really being reported. I’m just going off your graph you share.
Any opinions you voice about, well, anything should be disregarded. You don’t want to face facts.

Oh, like the federal government, state income tax rates Gradually rise based upon your income level. California’s highest rate is 12.3%. Shouldn’t round that up to 13%, should we? But their lowest rate is 7.25%. Admittedly, that’s still quite high. Highest in the country, actually. But do you think Texas is better at managing money than California? Not likely. States without income taxes make up that lost revenue by charging higher property taxes at the local level, significantly higher. So that’s a stupid argument to make. Every state is going to get the money somehow. They just may not call it a state income tax.

But, please, go on with making your arguments with fiction. I’m listening.

        1. Another lefty just making claims of some altered reality while supplying no facts to back it up.

Democrats believe in Democracy, no? Using a fake hoax to overthrow the government is not as bad as what Trump did? Really, whatever Trump did must be worse than that. Refresh my memory please?

This is an example of Trump Derangement Syndrome at work.

I bet you believe you made a true objective comparison in your mind.

          Democrats: Government Overthrow.
          Trump: Boogeyman.

          Boogeyman worse. Done.

        2. “a fake hoax to overthrow the government”. I am referring to the Russian hoax and fake investigation in an attempt to overthrow a sitting president. If you don’t know “Trump Russia Collusion” was a hoax by now, you are probably the few remaining.

Second. Fact: Trump NEVER said drink Lysol. He said disinfectant in the body, and there is medical examples of using disinfectants in your body. Actually many vaccines actually have embalming fluid (formaldehyde). According to FDA Website:

          https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/safety-availability-biologics/common-ingredients-us-licensed-vaccines

Third: There is a company using UV light tubes that are inserted in the lungs to kill COVID. According to Nurses.org:

          https://nurse.org/articles/uv-light-therapy-coronavirus-covid19/

So here are the facts. Now that you know the facts, will you respond and say “thank you for informing me”. or will get do what Democrats always do? Ignore these facts and get mad because you were told the truth that doesn’t agree with the delusional world you want to live in that has no basis in reality?

        3. “The amount of formaldehyde present in some vaccines is so small compared to the concentration that occurs naturally in the body that it does not pose a safety concern.”

Read what you post and learn from it.

        4. @applecynic

“Read what you post and learn from it.”

I did read it. I didn’t prescribe any amount. Neither did Trump. So we are comparing the “amount of naturally occurring formaldehyde” against what?

The amount that Trump prescribed? The amount I recommended?

I simply stated a fact. Trump said nothing about Lysol only said disinfectant. Which is true.

I also said, that it is normal to inject “disinfectant” as it is used in formaldehyde. Without discussing an amount.

So if YOU re-read what I wrote and what YOU wrote, you are now agreeing with me. Congratulations. You now agree that Trump said nothing about Lysol, and you further agree that our body produces natural disinfectant, and you further agree that injecting disinfectant in small doses makes sense.

I am proud of you. If you think through your own logic you will realize the stupidity of your ways. Welcome to Trump train!

          +1 on our side.

        5. A confused, trump tiny penis sucking cult member offers no facts.

        6. You are just 1 sad and confused idiot if your brain can so twist facts so you actually believe this.

Jeebus this country is going downhill.

        7. Really twist facts? Name which facts are twisted? Don’t be a typical leftist. engage and explain. Calling names is not an argument.

          It once again proves:

Republicans get mad when you lie to them
Democrats get mad when you tell the truth.

Prove me wrong. Point out what I said that is incorrect.

        8. Confused,

You pointed out that small amounts of formaldehyde are in some vaccines as a preservative. Cynic replied that the amount that gets transferred into the patient in an injection is so small that it barely raises the background level in the body. He provided a link to evidence for this.

You then attacked Cynic for accurately quoting a scientific fact. The preservative does not have a therapeutic effect on the patient because the dosage is almost indetectable. Formaldehyde in measurable quantities is not used to treat human beings. It is used to embalm them.

You have provided no evidence from anybody other than Dr. Donald that injecting human beings with a medically significant quantity of disinfectant has ANY beneficial therepeutic effects, much less enough benefit to offset the risks.

With regard to Formaldehyde, the trace amount in the human body is not there as a disinfectant. It is a byproduct of the metabolism of certain amino acids. That has the same relevance to coronavirus treatment as the use of Lysol and isopropyl alcohol to disinfect surfaces. Just because it kills germs externally to the body does not make it safe for internal use.

Medical facts are not political. They are not leftist or rightist. Twisting facts for a political purpose, as you have done, is something else entirely.

        9. @TXUSER

“You have provided no evidence from anybody other than Dr. Donald that injecting human beings with a medically significant quantity of disinfectant has ANY beneficial therepeutic effects”

I didn’t say that any quantity of disinfectant has any beneficial effect. I only pointed out that disinfectant is not Lysol and that vaccines currently use disinfectant. Trump did not prescribe a dosage and neither did I.

Furthermore, the definition of disinfectant is:

          1) a chemical liquid that destroys bacteria.
          2) causing the destruction of bacteria.

Are you suggesting that there have never been any type of disinfectants used in our bodies ever, that meet that definition ?

Words matter. The problem I find in the discussion between left and right is that people on the left (for some reason) mix emotion with fact. People on the right then to be more precise.

Once again. Everything I said was true. The original remark was a ridiculous interpretation that Trump said Lysol, that and UV Light was bogus technology.

I simply pointed out that Trump DID NOT say Lysol, and yes, disinfectants are used in the body. I did not promote formaldehyde for any medical purpose nor and medical dose. Furthermore I pointed out UV technology in existence to treat Corona. Everything I said was factual and still is.

Furthermore, with the dictionary definition of disinfectant, many medicines meet that literal definition.

          I said nothing more.

The problem is that for some reason, people on the left can’t seem to focus on the true definition of words and make up their own narratives in their mind to validate their own beliefs.

That is why the word DISINFECTANT becomes LYSOL. Then after a simple substitution. Aha, trump says inject LYSOL. Crazy man.

When I point out that disinfectant IS used in the body, then it becomes about Aha, but the body only produces small amounts.

The actual definition of words don’t matter to the leftist mind, unless used to discredit him.

If Trump says it is a “sunny day”. People on the left would zoom into a single cloud in the sky and take him precisely literal and say “Trump is a liar– there is a cloud”.

It is like a mental illness. We are in the twilight zone when we are here debating the definition and splitting hairs of the definition of disinfectant, while a group of people illegally frame people and attempt a coup to try to overthrow OUR government. That seems to be OK, while we invent stories in our mind that Trump said Lysol.

        10. This is an interesting example of a particular mindset. In his own mind, and those of his supporters, every casual remark that the President utters is as inerrant as the Bible. Therefore, they find it impossible to do what 44 prior Presidents did regularly: admit they had misspoken, clarify what they meant, and move on. The desperate struggle to justify the internal use of disinfectants is just another example.

I watched the April 23 event as it was happening, so I am not relying on possibly biased media accounts. William Bryan, Undersecretary for Science and Technology at the Department of Homeland Security, presented a study that found sun exposure and cleaning agents like bleach, isopropyl alcohol, and chemical disinfectant (Lysol wasn’t mentioned because that is a brand name) can deactivate coronavirus within a minute. Bryan was clearly referring to the use of liquid disinfectants and aerosols to clean surfaces or clear the air in an empty room.

President Trump responded, turning to the Task Force members, so it was clearly not a joke or a sarcastic response to the press, saying,

“And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.”

So, no, he did not specifically suggest ingesting Lysol, but he did think the basic idea was worth a clinical trial. The White House began backing off the idea immediately, particularly after poison hotlines around the country reported a spike in calls about folks who had consumed a disinfectant or bleach.

However, that hasn’t stopped Trump supporters from trying to defend his suggestion as the wisdom of a subtle genius. They cannot admit that he made a dumb remark, as if he were a mere fallible mortal like one of us. Attributing omniscience, or any other divine attribute, to a human being goes beyond political loyalty into the realm of idolatry.

      1. Absent a few cheap shots, that’s actually an interesting story you’re peddling… …if it’s based on verified facts.

I’ve never been a big Cuomo fan so I’m open to the possibilities you raise.

So. Got (relatively non-biased) sources? Otherwise it’s an articulate story, but just a story.

      2. “But Cuomo!” Yes, mistakes were made; that’s inevitable with any crisis.

Another example of a mistake was the utter denial and inaction of the Federal government in February, right? If you can find anything that could have been done better, then it clearly wasn’t a “10 out of 10” level performance.

In any event, Cuomo isn’t responsible for only NY State; he’s responsible for NYC too (roughly half the population of the State) and the mortality situation there was worse than being in a literal war zone.

        Case in point:

“Converting this to micromort language, an individual living in New York City has experienced roughly 50 additional micromorts of risk per day because of Covid-19. That means you were roughly twice as likely to die as you would have been if you were serving in the U.S. armed forces in Afghanistan throughout 2010, a particularly deadly year.”

        https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/22/well/live/putting-the-risk-of-covid-19-in-perspective.html

Note the phrasing in the above carefully: it is stating that living a single day in NYC was twice as dangerous than spending an entire year (that’s what ‘throughout 2010’ means) as one of our troops in Afghanistan in 2010 (one of the most deadly years).

        1. The enthusiasm in some quarters for following guidance from public health professionals declined rather sharply when some folks realized that they could call for sacrifices safely because other Americans would be the ones disproportionately sacrificed. Not only is there the age issue, but also this:

In Kansas, Black residents are 7 times more likely to die than White residents. In Wisconsin and Washington D.C., the rate among Blacks is 6 times as high as it is for Whites, while in Michigan and Missouri, it is 5 times greater. In Arkansas, Illinois, New York, South Carolina, and Tennessee, Blacks are 3 times more likely to die of the virus than Whites.

    1. No Bro, Eric “Woe is me from Hell” is the laughing stock of MDN. Trump due for a massive landslide victory, you will be crying into your cornflakes. Sorry dude.

  2. Who’s the we? The governors will do what is required to save lives in most states. If Trump had acted a week sooner, a recent report shows 36,000 fewer people would have died. That’s more lives than would be lost in 12 9/11s. Who new the most dangerous terrorist in US history was being elected in 2016?

Why are you even posting this article at all? It has absolutely nothing to do with Macs or even Apple.

    1. There are 271 Apple retail stores in the U.S.

It matters very much for Apple if we’re going to stupidly destroy the economy again because some pajama boys are worried or if we’re going to smartly and simply quarantine the aged and vulnerable as we should have done all along, genius.

      1. So you would discriminate against the aged and vulnerable?

Every epidemic, ever in history, back to leprosy and before you quarantine the carriers.

Since the healthy can’t be carriers and we have grossly inadequate testing you get this.

  4. There is no chance in hell Trump wins Michigan this election. Not. Going. To. Happen. He is so hated here it’s not even funny. Everywhere you go nothing but hatred for Trump.

    1. “How could Nixon have won? Nobody I know voted for him.” – Pauline Kael, delusional and cloistered NYC Dem/Lib/Prog, November 1972

      1. There is good money to be made in Soylent Green. That might be even better than just imprisoning the vulnerable (who turn out to be largely from groups that vote for Democrats).

        P.S. What are “pajama boys?”

        1. The topic is, or was, the wisdom of imposing reasonable public health measures in the event of a second-wave outbreak. The President says he won’t do it, and most of the posters here agree. It is not off-topic to suggest that the reason for that is that “our sort of people” won’t be affected. The people to be given the choice between confinement and death are groups that are already marginalized in American society. One man’s right to crowd into public spaces without a mask is more vital than another man’s right to live, because some human lives are more valuable than others.

I am not saying we need to lock up the economy forever or even for another day. I am saying that reasonable precautions like masks and social distancing are not too great a burden to avoid another 100,000+ American deaths.

        2. Whatever, doomer.

Do you ever get sick of your sanctimonious dopamine hits?

I also question why this is related to Apple.

I used to enjoy this site when there use to be reasonable discussion on Apple topics. Occasionally a flame war would happen but in generally balanced comments.

Now no-one posts comments unless it is political motivated. Nobody wins an argument by hurling insults

        1. Hal do you really think name calling is clever? Do you think that real adults wince and cry when you say mean things to them? I’ve got some bad news for you. It only makes you look petulant and childish.

        2. Donald J. Trump is petulant and childish.. a wonderful exemplar. He has perfected the art of whining. He should write a book about it. It would win the Noble Prize for sure.

      1. Which is why I ignore MDN’s pleas for funding. Like the US Senate and Wall Street and the White House, MDN is amoral. Thank god Twitter is beginning to snap out of its soporific swoon to fact-check the tweets that Trump extracts from Fox. It is disgraceful for the Chief Executive to behave this way.

  6. Life comes first, death second. Lockdowns are a hudge mistake of politicians in panic and fear. Countries with lockdowns (US, Spain, Italy, France, UK) have to highest deathrates.
