China hid data showing severity of COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak

According to three U.S. officials, China hid data showing severity of COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, under-reporting both the total cases and deaths the socialist authoritarian country experienced, the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report.

Nick Wadhams and Jennifer Jacobs for Bloomberg News:

China hid data on COVID-19 coronavirusThe officials asked not to be identified because the report is secret and declined to detail its contents. But the thrust, they said, is that China’s public reporting on cases and deaths is intentionally incomplete. Two of the officials said the report concludes that China’s numbers are fake.

The outbreak began in China’s Hubei province in late 2019, but the country has publicly reported only about 82,000 cases and 3,300 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That compares to more than 189,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths in the U.S., which has the largest publicly reported outbreak in the world.

While China eventually imposed a strict lockdown beyond those of less autocratic nations, there has been considerable skepticism of China’s reported numbers, both outside and within the country… Stacks of thousands of urns outside funeral homes in Hubei province have driven public doubt in Beijing’s reporting.

Deborah Birx, the State Department immunologist advising the White House on its response to the outbreak, said Tuesday that China’s public reporting influenced assumptions elsewhere in the world about the nature of the virus. “The medical community made — interpreted the Chinese data as: This was serious, but smaller than anyone expected,” she said at a news conference on Tuesday. “Because I think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data, now that what we see happened to Italy and see what happened to Spain.”

  1. Nice spin MDN. Teflon Don’s campaign will get that check in the mail to you.

After the pandemic was clearly known, politicians around the world continued to declare it was just another flu. They canceled direct flights to Chyyyyna, told everybody that Xi has it under control — almost airtight! — and then went golfing.

    1. Since China lied, and continues to lie, President Trump’s statements are entirely in line with first relying on China’s fake COVID-19 data, then the U.S. and other transparent countries amassing later COVID-19 data that revealed the real extent of the issue. What you’ve posted only reinforces the point that due to China’s lies and continuing lies, people died and continue to die.

If you were capable of logic (TDS makes people totally illogical), you’d be thanking President Trump for recognizing the threat so early, even after China lied to the world, and acting so quickly to ban China flights, then Europe flights, closing borders, etc.

      1. The press called Trump racist for the travel ban. Were the Taiwanese racist for implementing the first travel ban due to the “virus that shall not be named by its origin”? No, they were protecting themselves. That is what Trump did. Protect Americans. His actions may have delayed the US outbreak by days or weeks. Meanwhile China KNOWINGLY put (allowed) their infected citizens on flights to every corner of the earth. Let’s all bash Bad Orange Man.

        1. Trump is racist because he spent decades preventing minorities from living in his apartment blocks. He lost the lawsuits too. He took out a full page ad recommending to shortcut justice and string up the Central Park Five, who were later exonerated. Nothing has changed inside the orange combover.

        3. Here is your first post:

Trump is racist because he spent decades preventing minorities from living in his apartment blocks. He lost the lawsuits too. I was simply pointing out the irony of your own post(s):

2 – neither of your posts discuss the supposed subject of this website
3 – Is calling people racist considered “bringing new points, data, clarification, explanation”? Is calling people names considered “bringing new points, data, clarification, explanation”?
4 – So, by doing the above, didn’t YOU just admit that YOU are and ass with nothing to contribute?

          So:

How about YOU be the better person and reply to my post with new points, data, clarification, explanation related to the subject of this page or the supposed subject of this website. In YOUR OWN words: Mac News anywhere around here?

      2. “President Trump’s statements are entirely in line with first relying on China’s fake COVID-19 data…”

Wow, you will believe anything the idiot tweets. I have a bridge to sell you First Then!

        1. Just to compare, let’s take a look at Obama’s handling of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

The Obama administration waited six months to address the pandemic, which ultimately resulted in almost 275,000 hospitalizations, killed over 12,400 Americans, and sickened more than 60 million people.

    2. “After the pandemic was clearly known…”

Clearly known by whom? I assume that by “clearly known,” you mean “everyone.” If “everyone” knew, why wasn’t it being reported on by any network in January or even early to mid-February? Wasn’t it “clearly known” that a horrible pandemic was upon us? If it was “clearly known” by everyone, then why didn’t everyone prepare? Certainly YOU clearly knew and prepared in January. Right? Hmm… I’m sure you didn’t lift a finger until March even though you “clearly knew” better two to three months earlier. Right?

Just two weeks ago… “In mid March, you could hardly get people off beach in Florida, but you think the American public was going to consent to deep-freeze the economy and shut down the NFL in January?” (David Harsanyi for National Review)

        1. Hey Dan, grow up. We are in the midst of a global pandemic. S—t is happening and it sucks. That is why it is called a pandemic. Maybe Pedro Sanches Perez-Casejon should have been better prepared. Maybe Comrade Xi shouldn’t have hid the truth for four months. Maybe Sergio Mattarella should have clamped down harder and sooner. Maybe Trump should have started on a vaccine in November 2019. Maybe Americans should get the hell off the beaches and into their homes. Maybe The WHO shouldn’t have ignored Taiwan’s December 31 warning. Tell me Dan, which world leader has handled this to your satisfaction? Maybe Kim Jong-un? Wow, no cases!

Maybe you should have been better prepared. You were aware of the pandemic in January, weren’t you? It was all over the news. Oh… no it wasn’t. CNN was busy promoting the big impeachment narrative then.

Tell me Dan, where is the cure, where are there enough doctors, hospital beds, masks, nurses, vaccines, money, successful treatments, oxygen tanks, body bags, magic bullets, ventilators? Where? Nobody is prepared. That is why it is called a pandemic. If it were just the sniffles, today would just be another day at the office. Well, it ain’t and here we are. All around the world. It sucked in 1918, it sucks in 2020 and it is gonna suck a 100 years from now. Grow up.

          https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/04/armchair-quarterbacks-try-to-rewrite-history-on-coronavirus/

A pandemic is an epidemic of disease that has spread across a large region, for instance multiple continents, or worldwide. A widespread endemic disease with a STABLE number of infected people is NOT a pandemic.

    1. The World Health Organization is a sham and the U.S. should cut funding to a corrupt organization that parrots China lies, causing innocent people to die.

      1. Did you know the Thai rep to The ChinaWHO suggested that the council hold their next session in Wuhan? He went on to say that, after discussion with his wife, he was willing to use half of his retirement fund to pay the expenses of the trip. No takers!

Once this storm passes, I dare Trump to pull the US out of The ChinaWHO and kick them off our soil. He should make it a campaign promise before November.

Who needs the ChinaWHO? What are they really doing? Anyone know? The United States can’t survive without the “assistance” of the ChinaWHO? Are you sure? Little Taiwan seems to be doing fine without the ChinaWHO.

      2. Jan 11, 2020: The WHO was working as fast as possible to understand the new virus. Virologists in Berlin produced the first diagnostic test for the disease.
        https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/06/coronavirus-testing-failure-123166

Two days later, the WHO tells the world that the coronavirus had spread outside China and issued guidance for people to take. US administration officials are silent at first, then poo-poo it, comparing the virus to the flu or the common cold.
        https://www.who.int/news-room/detail/13-01-2020-who-statement-on-novel-coronavirus-in-thailand

Feb. 26, 2020: Orange leader wannabe states in a press conference that the USA has no problems, world renowned doctor Pence will lead the charge. Americans are told of “the fifteen cases that could go to zero.” All the while fully knowing that test kits were not available in the USA for the vast majority of hospitals across the nation, and wouldn’t be for well over a month and counting BECAUSE THE ADMINISTRATION DIDN’T ORDER TEST KITS FROM THE WHO. The administration didn’t see any value in spending money on identifying where the virus was spreading. They claimed — and this is amply documented for two months — that China was containing the problem. The decimated CDC, as we all can see, did not rise to the occasion in time to effectively produce any test kits that worked before the virus was well circulated.

The administrative spin of course downplayed all that. “Don’t Test, Don’t Tell” is what China and the USA both did until the pandemic was out of control. Let’s not pretend otherwise.
        https://quillette.com/2020/03/06/dont-test-dont-tell-the-bureaucratic-bungling-of-covid-19-tests/

By Mar 2020 however no amount of press management and spin could contain the obvious. The pandemic was raging worldwide. Italy showed how fast it could overwhelm their underprepared hospitals. But the administration still couldn’t issue any empathy and was slow in pivoting its messaging to the gullible base. What’s the answer? MORE SPIN! Let’s see if we can make Obama look bad by issuing lies about his response to SARS! Oh, look tough and call this a war! Deflect blame onto China! Only people who eat bats can get this! Tell everyone that the USA is doing relatively better than other nations (objectively untrue). Above all, tell the people the lies they want to hear. We’ll restart everything by Easter, because Dear Leader will make the sunshine kill the virus! Magical medications will cure everyone, or at least cover up the symptoms! Go to church and pray really hard, my good lemmings!

It is astounding to see so many paid trolls defending Trump despite the administration’s obvious lies and spin. The videos of him downplaying the threat from the virus for months, telling people not to worry, telling people that the virus is “contained” and that things will be back to normal in no time are all there for you to see. One month ago he famously claimed incorrectly in Feb that the “numbers” were 15 and would soon be “zero”. Today he highballed the possible death totals in an obvious play to take credit for the lower eventual death count to come in “below expectations”. Flip flopper. The administration is over its head.

Supposedly Trump and Xi have a great working relationship, at least according to The Don. But okay, for the benefit of clueless political hacks like First Whatever, let’s pretend due to translation issues that all through Dec. 2019 The Don didn’t have any clue what was going on in China, and he couldn’t possibly spare a CDC expert to investigate to get the truth. Fine, the WHO did all the work and published what they knew all through Jan. and Feb. 2020. What did The Don do? Trump had plenty of time for golf and rallies and parties.

By Mar. 2020, the USA had dead bodies and reported infection rates were clearly going up exponentially. He pretends that as a strongman he’s immune to mere viruses but he hasn’t bothered to visit a single family that has lost a victim to this virus. The man seldom speaks about lives and deaths, that’s not his interest. He still uses the word “numbers” repeatedly as if to downplay the situation. His only real goal is to use the crisis for political leverage, as always.

Trump’s lack of concern is well reflected in the failures of his administration to plan properly or take the necessary steps to prepare this country for this crisis. He did attempt to defund the CDC. He has made promises without follow-through. He has lied on camera through his teeth. He fiddled while the pandemic gained steam. Pandemic experts worldwide were calling out for a massive increase in testing and ventilator manufacture by mid-february while the president tweeted away what he thought people wanted to hear. There is a reason why the US is one of the the worst hit countries in the world. If the president who literally said that “the numbers will be down to zero soon” a month ago isn’t to blame for the failure of our nation to prepare for this crisis than who is? Other countries have handled this crisis far better than we have, and their numbers of infected/dead are much lower as a result.

The buck stops at the president’s desk. He is ultimately responsible for the failures of his administration. Trump will oversee tens of thousands of American deaths, the collapse of the stock market, and a recession that will make 2008 look like a joke, and he will claim victory. Even if he takes “no responsibility at all” for his failures, he still has earned it. Vote out the incompetent buffoon.

        1. “Jan 11, 2020: The WHO was working as fast as possible to understand the new virus.” Taiwan warned The WHO of the unspecified pneumonia on December 31, 2019 and received NO reply. That same day, Taiwanese health officials boarded all flights from Hubei Province (where Wuhan is located) to check for symptoms. Still no reply from The WHO. That same day, Taiwanese health officials began health checks on all who had arrived from Hubei Province since December 20, 2019. Still no reply from The WHO.

          Then…

          On January 14, 2020…

          The WHO Tweets…

“Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China”

Whoa! Thank gOD they were working as fast as possible! Where would we all be without The WHO?

    2. Those a$$ clowns still don’t recommend travel bans while the rest of the world realized we were way too late when we finally implemented them! They are incompetent beyond belief. We are where we are because we listened to WHO nonsense and all our world leaders acted like stunned deer in the headlights for three months!

  2. John Hopkins must remove China’s USELESS numbers from their dashboard. Other websites, too. False data hurts others because doctors and scientists don’t get an accurate picture of what is going on. USELESS crap from China! Now watch them call me a xenophobe. I’m the xenophobe because the CCP is crap!

  3. I agree that we need to work together to address the Coronavirus pandemic. However, that does not mean that I or anyone else has an obligation to refrain from criticizing the actions and public statements of the POTUS or his Administration, especially since the flood of false statements from the POTUS continues. In fact, the POTUS is now publicly denying his prior public statements. Furthermore, the POTUS is a hypocrite with unbelievable gall when he criticizes other of politicizing the pandemic. Trump politicizes absolutely everything and does not exclude any topic in his seemingly endless series of GOP rallies or his Fox News talking points or his daily verbal and Twitter rants to the world.

The GOP blames everything on other people and other groups. Get some balls and face up to the facts and the truth for once. The POTUS royally fscked up and there are dozens of recorded interviews and public addresses by the POTUS to prove it.

  4. Now that the virus has spread across China’s borders, epidemiologists can start to study it and hopefully provide guidance to world governments and those in the medical field. Thanks for the months delay, China!

  5. IT WASN’T OUR FAULT! NOBODY COULD HAVE KNOWN! DON’T BLAME US! BLAME THE CHINESE!

The spin machine is already working full throttle, and the poor deluded Republicans are swallowing it hook, line, and sinker.

When did becoming a Republican mean you had to abandon your critical thinking???

    1. There is no spin. Yes, China gets partial blame. LAST YEAR, they arrested their own doctors for reporting a new pneumonia. Efforts to spread the word to medical colleagues were deleted. Taiwan reported the new illness to The WHO in December 2019 and got no response. Why didn’t CHINA speak up? You can blame everyone you want, that is your prerogative. But you cannot ignore the lies from China. (Actually, you can ignore their lies, if you like.) Yes, China gets partial blame! 3,300 deaths in China? That is the crap that they are feeding the world. Some people just eat it up!

      1. All the romance language countries in Europe are having a hard time. But they have been Great at reporting who what when in their hospital reports to the public absolutely Great.

    2. From the “you won’t get real news from CNN, MSDNC, etc.” file:

About those ventilators for COVID-19 patients

In 2012, there was going to be a government stockpile of ventilators, until the government took a bribe to not keep a stockpile of ventilators. Then there wasn’t going to be a government stockpile of ventilators, so if any of your friends or relatives die due to ventilator rationing, send Obama a thank-you card.

  6. America was clearly underprepared for such a virus—Democrats and Republicans need to both accept the blame for shortages of basic (and normally cheap) medical resources, for example.

But China clearly acted, and continues to act deceptively.

And then there’s this, which is on a whole ‘nother level of deceptive duplicity:

China blames US Army personnel for introducing COVID 19 to Wuhan.

    https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/chinese-officials-blame-us-army-for-coronavirus-67267

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/13/world/asia/coronavirus-china-conspiracy-theory.html

        1. Unfortunately, US officials cannot recommend wearing a mask to the general public because a) there are not enough masks, b) medical staff needs the masks that are available, c) panic will erupt if the CDC recommends masks and they aren’t available.

          https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202003240015

White House announces The Pillow Guy will produce 1,500,000 masks this month and press criticizes him.

          https://www.infowars.com/the-my-pillow-guy-just-triggered-a-herd-of-leftists-and-its-hilarious/

    1. a) Is the US Federal Government minimizing numbers?

      b) Wuhan is in Hubei Province which is in Red China.

      c) The “virus which shall not be named after its place of origin” originated in Wuhan (which is not in the US). That is not “blame.” This is a fact.

    1. Dear #include,

Thank you for your post and the link! A disgusting and damning video to be sure. The 23,595,000 residents of independent and democratic Taiwan appreciate you for your post! As you may know, we are fighting the Wuhan Pneumonia without any assistance from the who (they do not deserve all caps). Perhaps world leaders will carefully consider the value, or lack thereof, of the who once this pandemic passes.

      Taiwanese from Kaohsiung, Taiwan

      Go TAIWAN!!

      1. I guess some people didn’t watch the video of the absurd interview with the WHO doktor. The one WHO pretended to not hear the question. Haha! What a clown! The one WHO hung up mid-interview. Zero credibility!

  7. First Whatever Stevejackass and cronies now have their marching orders to throw the WHO under the bus.

Orange Dotard had no qualms about letting the WHO handle everything in January:

Re: trusting China: pot and kettle situation. Orange Dotard brags about his great relationship with Xi regularly. Why trust either of them? Orange Dotard does nothing but press relations. I’ll believe he cares about health and well-being of working class Americans when he visits a hospital and talks directly to victims families without a carefully prestaged photo op.
