Intel completes sale of smartphone modem business to Apple

Intel today announced it has completed the sale of the majority of its smartphone modem business to Apple.

This transaction, valued at $1 billion, was announced on July 25, 2019.

As Intel previously disclosed, this transaction enables Intel to focus on developing technology for 5G networks while retaining the option to develop modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs, Internet of Thing (IoT) devices and autonomous vehicles.

  1. I’m sure the entire world is anxiously waiting to see 5G cell towers or 5G access points on every block. That’s excluding me, of course. I’m quite satisfied with plenty of WiFi access points and 4G LTE. I realize no one can hold back tech advances, so 5G is inevitable, but I’m in no rush to have it.

I do hope Apple can do something with Intel’s 5G modem business. Qualcomm has no real competitors and even Apple will only be using their Intel-based 5G modems exclusively, so Qualcomm will basically have the entire world of 5G to themselves. I just hope Apple’s 5G modems are in the same speed class as Qualcomm’s 5G modems, otherwise Apple will have to face a crap-load of criticism from the tech-heads.

    1. It’s ok, my username was a sad attempt at poking fun at the orange one, his cox must be orange too.

This matters to 5G users because both are a side effect of using 5G – orange skin, ever smaller hands and a coxorange await.

Having met a few famous people is only of mental benefit.
