iOS 13.2.2 kills battery life for some users

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes for ZDNet:

Apple’s iOS 13.2.2 update, which was pushed out to fix a bug that essentially broke multitasking on the iPhone and iPad, has itself bought a new and annoying bug to the iPhone.

A few hours after installing iOS 13.2.2, I noticed that battery life had gone from good to appalling. The initial iOS 13 release wasn’t too bad, but the iOS 13.1.2 release had a serious battery bug. While this bug was subsequently fixed, this latest release seems to bring back this bug. Battery life is now so bad that I can watch my battery life ticking down while I’m browsing the web, composing an email, or using Twitter.

  1. I’m still running 13.1.3 on my phone. It seems to work okay and I’m tired of all these updates breaking new things while fixing older issues. Maybe Apple will get it together by 13.6.3.

  2. Whatever was before this update (I’ve lost track) was crazy good on battery life (iPad 10.5″ Pro). Maybe that was because it was terminating everything prematurely. 🙂 I’ve noticed a bad turn difference with this update. Not terrible, but noticeable. I’ve always had just about everything in the background turned off. Why can’t there be just one big red button; when the screen is off everything stops.

    1. Well aren’t you lucky that “there are other models”? That’s “a benefit of a multi-vendor ecosystem”.

Why don’t you follow the wisdom of your own words and go get some of those “other models”?

  3. As I’ve commented here before with one of my iPhones (an old 6s) it does not look like 13.2.2 kills battery live but rather causes completely useless and inaccurate reporting. How else could that phone run at 1% for up to three hours and during that time keep up with mail and such? How else could it go from 100% to 70% in minutes doing nothing but surfing the web and checking emails (no videos or music playing)?

    1. Not on iOS 13 yet, but my own 6s has had terrible battery life on iOS 12.x even though it got a new battery less than a year ago (end of Apple’s cheap battery replacement program).

There’s no way basic web browsing for 30 minutes should drop the battery from 100% to 55%

  4. I have to agree… I’m really sad I did the upgrade and would downgrade anytime. I love the dark feature but it’s just not worth the drained battery and the more annoying features like the Memojis… I mean most adults don’t want them and there are more users than 13 years olds Apple. Get a grip on the things you’re releasing and please let us just remove what we want to remove, like the favourites section in messages.. It’s space consuming and time consuming to reorganize the whole phone after an upgrade.
I’m really upset about this and would love to downgrade, but they even hindered people on doing that, by not allowing a downgrade like previous versions did.
