European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager told a news briefing at Web Summit that she has received many expressions of concerns regarding Apple Pay.
“We’ve been asking quite a number of questions because we get many many concerns when it comes to Apple Pay for pure competition reasons. People see it becomes increasingly difficult to compete in the market for easy payments,” [said] European Competition Commissioner Vestager.
The European Commission has asked online sales companies whether they have been told to use its mobile payment service instead of rival services, an EU document seen by Reuters showed.
MacDailyNews Take: Pfft.
The EU is a garbage pot. In the UK the sooner we leave without a deal, the better.
“..for pure competition reasons.”
I can see where this is going..
China or EU. Little different when it comes to doing business there. My way or the highway.
So, who are the competition? GooglePay and PayPal? Is there a Chinese competitor? Is there a European competitor? It’s unlike Apple to try to force businesses to use their system. Apple depend on the strength of its ecosystem to lead the market where it wants it. If people have iPhones, they’re going to want to be able to use ApplePay. Apple sells a lot of phones but it is not certain the biggest vendor in Europe. In France, ApplePay was welcomed with open arms and many companies use ApplePay as a way to attract business. In Canada, ApplePay is everywhere and virtually every bank supports it through their cards (both debit and credit).
Huawei Pei, I mean, Pay?
I find this report kind of baffling. In my experience, the ability to use contactless payment is widespread throughout many European countries, and they seem to be open to any mobile payment system.
Make paying more difficult and we’re ok. Also, be nice…competition is very mean.
I smell an Apple Pay tax coming… because it’s Apple.
Never underestimate the looney hypocrisy
Or the looney bureaucracy.
