Roku Inc. shares were creamed 15% in after-hours trading Wednesday after it reported a third-quarter loss nearly triple that of a year ago.
Roku, a maker of video-streaming hardware, reported an adjusted loss of $26.5 million, or 22 cents a share, compared with a loss of $9.5 million, or 9 cents a share, in the year-ago period.
Roku makes streaming dongles and owns a streaming platform and channel. The company was under some strain, however, from increased competition, including Apple Inc.’s recently launched Apple TV+. Roku also faces fierce competition from Amazon.com Inc.’s Fire TV and Alphabet Inc.’s Google’s Chromecast.
MacDailyNews Take: If you want the best video streaming hardware, software, and user interface, and you value your privacy, you want an Apple TV 4K, not some Roku or any other piece of junk.

I have not ever known anyone who has used Roku. I have never seen Roku ads or ot it being sold anywhere. Must be some american thing. Guess its Rokus choice not to be eidele available and plummet. Could not care less. It always make me smile when such decisisions make companies fail. The sooner its gone, the better. Let it not stop other companies who can dream outside of the box.
I have a Sharp Roku TV, with Apple TV box, and a Roku Stick on the bedroom TV. I like Roku and I get the Apple TV on the stick. My Sharp TV didn’t allow me to add the Apple TV App, but the stick did, so everything is ducky! Roku is a different beast than the Apple TV box.
I like my Roku. It offers a lot of programming that just isn’t available on Apple TV. I know some people jailbreak their Apple TV’s to get additional programming, but I don’t. I do not consider jailbreaking to be an appropriate solution to get additional programming. And Roku is about half the price of AppleTV.
Everything I have is Apple except AppleTV. I have had a Roku for over 8 years and I continue to be happy with the company and don’t have any plans on buying a AppleTV.
I’ve got both an Apple TV 4K and a 55″ TCL Roku TV. The TV cost less than the Apple TV, for what it’s worth. About $250 if I remember. With the Apple TV+ app running on the Roku TV, I almost don’t need the Apple TV 4K. But for screen sharing and streaming home videos and ripped DVDs from my Mac, the Apple TV 4K is a must-have.
That’s confusing to follow, I know, but my point is that I agree with the others here that the Roku is really nice. I’m an Apple fanboy too (can I still be a “boy” at 63?), but that doesn’t mean I have to dis everything else. I did a lot of research and settled on the TCL (Chinese) and Roku combo because (as far as I can tell) it doesn’t eavesdrop on your conversations and send them to the NSA, Korea, China, or wherever.
I have both a TCL Roku TV (2 of them) and an Apple TV. They serve different needs. No need to denigrate one in favor of the other.
Maybe Google will buy them.

Nice attempt at revisionist history, MDN. Roku was founded in October 2002 by Anthony Wood, who had previously been President and CEO of RePlay TV, which was sold to SonicBlue.
You ignore all the advances Wood and his teams made from 1997 through 2007 because those boxes weren’t marketed under the Roku brand. Apple’s interest in TV didn’t begin until Jobs’ Second Coming when he realized that Apple had no traction in customers’ living rooms. Apple copied everything they legally could in order to launch Apple TV and you know it.
The problem is that they are not profitable. 250MM revenue is paltry.
I’ve been thinking about signing up for their service with the DVR option as part of cable cutting. Looks pretty good service but how much cash does it have left?
If Google does buy it then there is no way I will sign up.
I’m not paying them anything. You can if you want to use their channel, but I’m just getting Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Apple TV+. Through Amazon, I’m getting Hallmark (for the wife!) and through Apple I’m getting HBO off and on. I assume Roku gets a cut somewhere.
Show me where Roku abuses privacy MacDailyNews shouldn’t be so biased. Apple is great but so are other companies. Come on guys give us non biased reporting.
I have some TCL RokuTVs and some AppleTVs, and I use the AppleTV when I have a choice, but the Roku is fine. Both have maddening controllers.

Roku has 42-44% of the market and in industry they practically invented. All the top TV reviewers
rave about the how simple it is to use their system and if you buy a tv with roku built in you need no other equipment. Included is roku channel with tremendous amount free content and buy apps for any content that exits. Apple is said to be currently working non apple tv plus ape for roku.
