I prefer another app. It’s Ninox. The best Mac database, see it in the AppStore.
I’m looking at Ninox now as I try to move from FileMaker Pro to the web for mere mortals – importing the FMP into Ninox via CSV. Unlike Ninox, I don’t think FileMaker Cloud is the same as FMP desktop app in a web browser. So, I don’t think FM Cloud is a Ninox replacement yet – correct me if I’m wrong. I’ve tried several online databases like ZenKit, Airtable, Notion, TeamDesk, Zoho Creator, and keep coming back to FMP for, IMO, its ease-of-use, no-code, strong community, support, price, and documentation.
Ninox isn’t bad. It might be time to take a look again. FileMaker builds really complex solutions where intelligent data and a crapload of business rules are involved. And terabyte sized databases still run, but man are they expensive. The cloud solution above cost twice what putting a MacMini at a server host for the same number of users cost.
I needed to purchase a new 64 bit single copy but not at $540 per copy.
Another thing – FileMaker is owned by Apple but you can’t buy it in the Mac App Store. What’s up with that?
Because Claris has their own online store at their website and Apple doesn’t need to re-invent what Claris already does well. Too bad Apple doesn’t push FMP on Apple products as a pre-install option.
If you want a good look at what breaking up Apple would be like, take a look at the relationship FileMaker has with Apple. I bet Tim Cook barely knows it exists.
I had hoped that FileMaker would one day be an integrated part of the Apple ecosystem, but it doesn’t look like its ever going to happen. Too bad. It’s a powerful incentive for businesses to use the Mac and iPad because you can easily build custom solutions to business problems.
