CNET’s iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro drop test: ‘We couldn’t crack these phones; they’re a lot tougher than we thought’

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max feature the toughest glass ever in a smartphone and are rated IP68 for water resistance up to 4 meters for up to 30 minutes, and are protected against everyday spills including coffee and soda.

CNET put both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro through a series of drops to see if they would survive. Turns out, they’re a lot tougher than CNET thought.

Lexy Savvides for CNET:

What will it take to crack the glass on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro? That’s the question I’m asking myself after putting these phones through eight different drop tests, each time onto hard concrete. Try as I might, the glass on these phones just wouldn’t crack… At Apple’s September event, Kaiann Drance, senior director of product marketing said the iPhone 11 glass is the “toughest ever in a smartphone, on the front and back.”

MacDailyNews Take: Good to know, as we carry all of our iPhones naked, no cases here, so the obviously increased durability is very welcome!

Apple’s meticulously-designed iPhones aren’t meant to be hidden; naked iPhones only for us.MacDailyNews, July 10, 2017

If you do want a case (which helps in resale value, admittedly), check out ESR clear cases (inexpensive) or Apple’s clear cases (pricier, but official) as we’ve used both brands for friends’ and family members’ iPhones and can recommend them.

  1. Apple has been funding Corning and maybe this tougher glass is the result. It may not be considered innovation to the tech-heads but if Apple can actually get their hands on a tougher glass, I think it will be much appreciated by consumers. I had seen an earlier Youtube video of those new iPhones being dropped onto concrete from various body heights and although the cases got scratches, the glass didn’t crack. Even so, I’d still be using a case for extra protection and I always like the extra grip a case provides.

So even if the new iPhones lack USB-C, bilateral charging and 5G, I think minor things like tougher glass or longer battery life is great. Analysts or tech-heads might not find those things exciting, but I’m happy with any type of improvements that lessen wear and tear on a smartphone. So what if an iPhone is boring as long as it’s dependable and longer-lasting. I’ll gladly pay a premium for those points.

  2. It is probably just me but the British/Aussie accent everywhere is just annoying as hell. The vacuum cleaner test apparatus is about as ridiculous as the come. If you really want a good test throw the damn phone at the floor.

    1. The British/Aussie accent everywhere. What does that even mean? Are you saying that all British and all Australian accents are annoying? Or do you think that the British accent (whatever that means) is Australian? Last time I checked the Australian English accent is completely unique from other English speaking nations like the USA, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Canada, Wales & England. Each of those nations has their own unique form of spoken English. For example there are at least 20 different dialects in England alone which all sound quite different from each other. The Scottish English accent is not even comparable to say the cockney London English accent. Both are British. So are you saying that all variants of spoken English in Britain and in Australia are as annoying as hell? And if so which of the multitude of dialects are you referring to? And then there is the USA with it’s multitude of states and unique English accents from New York, Alabama to Hawaii. Are there any of those that are as annoying as hell or do you love them all equally? Blanket statements like yours are as annoying as hell to me, just saying.
