In Cupertino, California’s Apple Park at the Steve Jobs Theater, Apple is set to announce new iPhone models and more today at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT (6pm in London, 7pm in Berlin and Paris).
Late rumors include a much-improved iPhone naming scheme:
• iPhone 11 (6.1 inch) Liquid Retina LCD
• iPhone Pro (5.8-inch) OLED
• iPhone Pro (6.5-inch) OLED
We should also get release dates for a slew of operating systems: iOS 13, iPadOS 13, watchOS 6, tvOS 13, and macOS Catalina.
Perhaps we’ll hear more about Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade as well. Apple is reportedly also prepping a new 16-inch MacBook Pro, a new, more powerful Apple TV and new iPads although some or all of those might arrive in a separate event next month.

The biggest step forward for me of the 11 Pro over the Xs is the claim of 5 hours longer battery life. Sure the new cameras are nice. The machine learning stuff is interesting. But, if I can get 2 – 3 more hours in the real world that would be fantastic. I could stop carrying that little battery in my pocket for most days. (I’ve never been one to have one of those ultra think iPhone cases with a battery included.)
Oh No! No optical zoom on the 11.
If I remember correctly, the 11 has a 2x optical zoom and a 6x digital zoom in addition to that.
Checked Apple Store. It’s 2x optical zoom out. That’s opposite zooming in 2x, like looking through the binoculars the wrong way.
Extra wide lense? Isn’t zooming out equivalent to taking 5 steps backward?
It is unless your back is to a cliff or your taking a photo in a small room.

I don think “pro” users, that is, upper-middle class professionals, want a supersize-me phone. Large phones were invented for the Hee Haw demographic. The reason “pros” will settle for the 5.8 phone is that there is no normal-size iPhone pro. That is, they have to settle for the crumbs Apple will give them, yet still pay a premium price. Perhaps the reason Apple won’t make a full-feature innovative up-to-date iPhone that is not a jumbo is that it can’t do so, that it has lost its technological edge?
Tim Cook looked resentful and pissed through his fake smile and forged appreciations. This event was the first ever where I was compelled to stop watching it way before it ended due to its barrage of items and the piling on of explanations, short clips, demos, and promos all of which induced an uncomfortable level of anxiety from the very moment when he said, “…we have a lot of things so let’s get to it,” which, as a hint of what was to come, set the wrong tone, a tone of bombardment, a salvo. Missing was even a moderate amt. of joy and delight and magic. Where was the humanism?
