President Trump praises Apple CEO Tim Cook, calls him ‘a great executive,’ says Apple is ‘a great American company’

Today, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with the press before he departed the White House for a veterans event in Kentucky.

Malcolm Owen for AppleInsider:

Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Wednesday, Trump made the declaration about Cook, due to the Apple chief calling “whenever there is a problem.” The communication is “why he’s a great executive” according to Trump, “because he calls me and others don’t.”

“Others go out and hire very expensive consultants,” Trump said according to CNBC. “Tim Cook calls Donald Trump directly.”

Cook’s most recent engagement with Trump was on August 16, when they met for dinner and discussed a range of topics from business to human rights. Shortly after the discussion, Trump advised Cook had made a “good case” for Apple to avoid paying a new 10% tariff on Chinese electronic imports, which would affect the iPhone, in that it would place pressure on Apple but would not affect its main smartphone rival Samsung.

“The problem was that Samsung, a competitor, his competitor, wouldn’t be paying tariffs, and Tim Cook would,” Trump advised today. “I gotta help him out short-term, because it’s a great American company.”

    1. I see that Nick also needs something from the President.

Tim Cook is smart, he knows that all he has to do is tell Trump how great he is, that everyone LOVES him, and then put his face on the side of a building.
Saudi Arabia, Fox News, and others figured this out a long time ago. It’s about time CEO’s started figuring this out.

      That’s a good president!

  1. Tim Cook has always said better to engage than complaining from the sidelines

I note that Apple products contain USA made A chips, USA Qualcomm and Intel components, USA Corning glass and USA made batteries, power controllers etc Chinese parts some estimate come to about 10% of iPhone cost, Foxconn assembly is about $5 a phone.

I wonder how much Samsung (which has numerous factories in China making parts shipping them to Korea for assembly ) uses USA components.

  2. No big investor cares about some smarmy bromance. Apple can’t hold its value because almost no one wants to buy $1000 smartphones when consumers can buy good enough smartphones for half that price. Until Apple understands this, all the love and kisses in the world isn’t going to change anything. Apple could have made a killing last year if they had priced their iPhones at the right level. Instead, Apple ended up losing around $450B in a couple of months as iPhone sales tanked horribly. Samsung and the Chinese smartphone companies are cleaning up by selling mid-range smartphones.

It’s quite likely Samsung gets help from the S. Korean government and so do Chinese smartphone manufacturers get help from the Chinese government. Apple doesn’t get any help from the U.S. government and the tariffs are only going to put Apple further into a hole. It’s unfortunate, so Apple should just find alternative ways of making revenue. Apple should just go and acquire a cloud business and everyone would be a lot happier. Then Tim Cook wouldn’t have to go sobbing to POTUS. POTUS is a fickle dude and not dependable at all. He’d turn his back on Cook and Apple in a NY minute if he gets distracted by something else.

Where’s that Mexico/U.S. border wall POTUS was promoting so heavily. Yeah, that’s been put on the some back burner while he dines with Timmy Apple.

      1. Just another daily snarky put down of our hard working president who is a magician setting the economy on fire. No “magic wand” REQUIRED. Ohh, that’s right, you are TOTALLY BLIND and don’t see it not an atomic particle. Pity. No, I take that back.

It’s called rough and tumble decades long Bronx business experience qualifications the community organizer NEVER had a clue or experienced. The media and Hollywood were his wet nurses and kept him propped. A podium poser without a clue preaching and lecturing empty platitudes only a politically correct professor at Berkeley could love.

Finally, a tough nosed speak your mind and know where you stand president not playing politics or out for himself that gets RESULTS.

        The ULTIMATE people’s president…

        1. You really are addled… perhaps as senile as your guy.

“I am the chosen one”. WTF. If any other president said that, he’d be raked over the coals by everybody.

And cancelling a state visit because Denmark won’t discuss selling him Greenland. What a pathetic baby.

At this rate, how long does he have before he’s just drooling on his bib and shitting his pants?

        2. AND…BINGO! Slavish Sycophant GoeB throws up another verbal diarrhoea blathering word salad.
Hard working? Many here remember your “Muslim Userper Birther conspiracy crap with added golf excursion outrage…

Days Trump has spent at Mar a Lago:
          91
Cost of flights to Mar a Lago (24 so far):*
          ~$47,288,000
Days Trump has spent at Bedminster:
          75
Cost of flights to Bedminster (23 so far):*
          ~$18,375,500
Trump has visited his clubs once every this many days since his inauguration:
          4.5
Projected visits to golf clubs in four years:
          323
          Projected visits in eight years:
          646
Total times Obama played golf during his eight year Presidency:
          306

All that golfing expenditure on his own businesses – $110m and counting

        3. Hey my friend the Obama “Slavish Sycophant” good work. Now your home work assignment is to do the exact same comparison of Obama over eight years.

I don’t particularly care for cherry picked partisan post points. A full head to head OBJECTIVE COMPARISON is the ideal way and only way to pass FAIR JUDGEMENT.

You up for it? I think not…

        4. Thanks for confirming that Trump diehards are incapable of reading facts presented to them. From the above post…
          Trump:
Projected visits to golf clubs in four years:
          323
          Projected visits in eight years:
          646
          [Obama]
Total times Obama played golf during his eight year Presidency:
          306
          Let’s deconstruct your last paragraph.
“I don’t particularly care for cherry picked partisan post points.”…seriously? after posting “…
our hard working president who is a magician setting the economy on fire.” followed by “The ULTIMATE people’s president…”

Why does your head not explode? I think people need to know your state of mind. After all, you seem very distressed, you don’t seem to even ‘see’ facts presented in front of your eyes, you take criticism of your hero Trump personally and seem to think ‘concealed carry’ makes you invincible.
Yup, background checks as a bare minimum.

        5. I’ll ignore your insults, it’s just too easy coming from the left who denigrates EVERYONE except their own ilk.

Oh, I can read just fine. Projected numbers from whom, The Onion or Mother Jones. 🤣

          “Trump:
Projected visits to golf clubs in four years:
          323
          Projected visits in eight years:
          646”

          Apples and oranges MEANINGLESS comparison.

Visits? How many golf courses does Obama own? ZERO. How many golf courses does Trump own around the world?

His presidential retreat and vacation spot is a golf course near Mar-A-Lago. His Jersey golf course Trump has entertained foreign heads of state and spent time interviewing cabinet positions essentially working on his so called “golf course visits.”

Because he owns the properties, saves the taxpayers money just like a saving them money not taking a $400,000 presidential salary.

Wake up, blind partisan. You’re playing with a marked deck…

    1. Are you on drugs? The $450 billion dollar loss you are referring to is the market cap difference between AAPL’s high and AAPL’s low in the past year. It is incredibly misleading to frame that as “Apple ended up losing around $450B in a couple of months as iPhone sales tanked horribly”. Apple continues to post very healthy profits. Apple is not losing money. Apple’s market cap goes up and down and if you want to frame that as Apple losing money, well, keep taking those good good drugs.

    2. Apple’s net profit was up 23% last year….after their most profitable year ever in 2017. They made $59 billion dollars on $265 Billion dollars of sales. The net profit was the highest net profit ever experienced by a company in the history of the world. Apple’s net income exceeded Samsungs’s by 34%. Apple’s market cap is roughly 4.5x that of Samsung’s.

Yours is an odd definition of tanking AND cleaning up in comparison to one’s competitor.

Apple’s business plan seems to be working ok for now, ya know with the highest net profit ever thing and the almost $1 Trillion market cap. I am pretty sure Apple investors are more happy about Apple and Samsung’s are about Samsung.

Whatever short term stock dip took place it has since rebounded while Samsung’s stock price is down significantly since this time last year. It is pretty telling that even after that dip Apples market cap was still 3x that of Samsung.

I don’t think things are as bad with Apple as you seem to think.

Don’t get me wrong, there do seem to be things that could be improved but it is hard to find overall fault in the most profitable company ever that doesn’t fall to pieces when compared to other companies.

      Cheers to you.

    1. Perhaps, but I doubt he joined the President in pissing on the Danish war dead. Denmark was among the first NATO forces into Afghanistan and Iraq, and it suffered the heaviest casualties in proportion to its population—more than even the US. The Ballistic Missile Early Warning radars in Greenland supported a credible nuclear deterrent against the Soviet Union and continue to do so. The three autonomous components of the Kingdom of Denmark—Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark—are crucial in defending the North Atlantic against Russian submarines and cruisers.

Denmark is therefore not a country that a rational US President would want to insult, even if they were nasty enough to elect a woman Prime Minister who refused to discuss selling something that doesn’t even belong to Denmark.

  3. It would appear that Trump is following almost every page of the Harding playbook. We all should understand how that turned out. Apparently nobody talks about that on right wing media.

Those ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it.
