Tim Cook promises ‘major launches’ of ‘several new products’ in 2019: What’s coming?

Jonny Evans for Computerworld:

Apple announced record June quarter revenues, and while iPhone sales slowed, services climbed, and the company is promising “major launches” in the coming months.

This was our biggest June quarter ever — driven by all-time record revenue from Services, accelerating growth from Wearables, strong performance from iPad and Mac and significant improvement in iPhone trends. These results are promising across all our geographic segments, and we’re confident about what’s ahead. The balance of calendar 2019 will be an exciting period, with major launches on all of our platforms, new services and several new products. — Apple CEO Tim Cook, July 30, 2019

MacDailyNews Take: Evans lists a significant number of well-educated guesses with which we agree, including: the new Mac Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, new iPad Pro models, next-gen iPhones, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Card, new AirPods, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, and more.

The second half of 2019 is shaping up to be a launch-fest of new products and services!

  1. When Tim uses words like “major” related to products, I am left unmoved. When Steve said there’s “one more thing,” the words had a credibility that gave anticipation reason.

    1. Tim Cook (and his lieutenants) has a bit of a street vendor mentality (coming from his beancounter days), i.e., hyping up when his needs and/or greed dictate. We warned him not to neglect Mac line and others which would be just as good a revenue generator as iPhone. Well, he finally realized he had no choice. I certainly hope his virtualm pipeline has finally started flowing after years of empty words.
Now i feel like I am getting back the sense (or scent?) of thrilling days of yesteryear.

      1. The grass was always greener when Steve Jobs was around. Blah, blah, blah…

I actually own some of the latest crop of Apple hardware. It’s all truly fantastic. The 44mm Apple Watch 4 in Space Black DLC Stainless is the best product Apple has ever made. Full stop. AirPods are a game changer which have increased my daily use of earphones by a large amount. The iPhone XS Max is a spectacular product and computing tour-de-force. My 4th generation Apple TV gets daily use and is very much appreciated In our household.

I don’t have a latest generation Mac because, well I just can’t find an excuse to trade up. My traditional computing needs do not require the latest/fastest Mac, and my 5 year old Retina MBP still runs like a brand new machine. The same is true of my iPad Air 2. I love the new iPads, but my 4 year old machine still runs the latest software and meets my needs perfectly…

I use multiple Apple devices and services every day. They all work great and they interoperate better than ever before.

Sorry, but Apple was not more exciting when its major claim to fame was a new iPod design each Christmas.

You’ve created a fictional narrative in your mind. Our collective expectations were lower then. We were more easily blown away.

Apple is executing amazingly well across multiple product lines. Anyone who says otherwise has an axe to grind or is only looking at surface details.

        1. I am a known Cook basher, and just giving him a tap on his back to compensate my past evil acts. I think I know his modus operandi, i.e., hyping, empty words and all that (probably because he did not really understand what he was doing?, lol).
OTOH, it is somewhat true that Apple is slowly getting out of the iPhone dark hole. Perhaps people around Cook who truly understand what was making Apple the Apple are slowly taking over and maneuvering him toward the real work, and Cook might be complying. That itself has to be complimented. But Cook is still Cook in my mind:-)

    2. I don’t know that he specifically said ‘…we just know you are going to loooove the exciting new products we have lined up for you later in the year…’ Close maybe but different enough to maybe wonder if he has FINALLY got it into his head Hyperbole has to be delivered especially when you repeat the same promises year upon year, it’s far better to under promise and over deliver than the opposite so let’s hope it’s the former rather than the products simply being even more dull or uninspiring than usual. To be fair, the game has been raised finally of late, so just maybe he has learned a lesson belatedly and realised doing as little as possible to maintain the highest possible profit can be self defeating over time.

  2. Clam down. Major lunches on all platform… Remember AppleTV+? AppleArcade? Binding those to iOS, OSX, iPad OS, WatchOS, homekit … Several new products ; most of those will be refresher or based on product line (MBP 16″, Homepod 2 or mini, AppleWatch 5 or 6 , Airpod 3). No new groundbreaking product yet.

    Once again, calm down

  3. When Apple can come out with operating systems “that just work” then maybe I’ll stop criticising Apple for dropping the ball. Sure, Apple had to bring out Snow Leopard to fix the flaws in Leopard but virtually everyone sees the former as the gold standard of Mac operating systems. And for the record that gold standard was under Steve Jobs’ watch.
