President Trump: Apple will not be given tariff wavers for Mac Pro parts that are made in China

U.S. President Donald Trump today said via Twitter, “Apple will not be given Tariff waiver, or relief, for Mac Pro parts that are made in China. Make them in the USA, no Tariffs!”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote on Tuesday, “On the face of it, given only a cursory glance, it’s a bad PR look in the U.S. for flush-with-cash Apple to be moving production from Texas to China while asking for a ‘tax break.’ That’s how the average schmo on the street is going to see this.”

      1. Apple is one greedy bastard of a company that’s dreaming of getting the Mac Pro made cheaply in China then turn around and markup the price through the roof to gain massive profit margins for the purpose of satisfying their share holders and increase management personnel bonuses. Lets all applaud our commander in chief for recognizing apple for what it truly is, an unapologetic unpatriotic self serving greedy bastard of a company by saying .”hell no” to their tariff exemption request. 🇺🇸MAGA🇺🇸

        1. I will second glad to see you back. But unfortunately you have been misrepresented before and gone a long time. The lack of the Yankee avatar is a tip-off. So, is this the real you?…

  1. “Um yah. We are moving our… what will be a $10,000 – $25,000 computer build out of the US over to China. Thus, we really would like a tariff exception for parts for it, or we won’t make our 8000% gross margins on it…”

Glad the admin didn’t cave for this. We (AKA – the USA) cannot give special privileges (many of which exist anyway) to every big player that says they need exceptions.

Exceptions are yet another version of crony capitalism at its worst. Large companies treated differently than small companies. Which, of course, should be illegal, but is not.

I’m not a tariff fan – at all. That said, once put into place, it had better be effective and caving to every big player that knocks on the door makes the tariff play all that more ineffective. Give to Apple (they already do for iPhones), and John Deere, CAT, Carrier, you name it, they’ll all come running – again – for exceptions “You did it for Apple!” “You want campaign donations or not?!”

Not caving is a solid move on many, many, fronts…

    1. Tim was warned about this…

Trump met with ‘elite’ from silicon valley and had few things to discuss, one being trade with China.

From a Reuters article from Dec 2016:

Trump meets Silicon Valley elite after mutual mistrust in campaign

“The meeting focused chiefly on economic issues, including job creation, lowering taxes and trade dynamics with China.”

      https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-technology-idUSKBN1431I8

Did Tim think that Trump was just teasing?

    2. Make the computers in China with tariffs high enough to penalize moving production out of the US will add 25% or more to the price of a computer that is already spectacularly expensive. Prediction: posters here will blame Tim Cook, not the guy who assessed the extra taxes on Americans to pursue his crackpot notions about international trade.

      1. You act as if no one EVER had these same ideas about trade before Trump came along, which is what people on the Left just don’t get-

Trump wasn’t elected because he came up with a bunch of new ideas, he was elected because he promised to actually enact the SAME ideas millions of us had had for decades.

So don’t think for a minute we are all following The Trumpster when in fact he is following US!

Your continuing elitism of treating the people who elected him as dimwits may make you feel superior, but we both know the reality is Trump has done an enormous amount of work as the Democrats try to grab the golden impeachment ring while slamming Mueller Madness chasers.

        Their hangover begins in 2020…

        1. “Trump wasn’t elected because he came up with a bunch of new ideas, he was elected because he promised to actually enact the SAME ideas millions of us had had for decades.”

The KEY point of his HISTORIC VICTORY. Yes, the left has no respect for what works and years of tradition.

They are mainly juvenile protesters and bomb throwers and after destruction offer no sane rational plan for recovery and moving forward.

“Your continuing elitism of treating the people who elected him as dimwits may make you feel superior”

Precisely! The smug snarky coastal elites are experts at mockery of traditions while contributing NOTHING. They are running on EMPTY…

      2. “Make the computers in China with tariffs high enough to penalize moving production out of the US will add 25% or more to the price of a computer that is already spectacularly expensive.”

“already spectacularly expensive.” The only comment in your post that is undeniably correct. It’s called the Apple Tax, hello?

Where do you get the “25% or more figure added to the price?” Please provide evidence links because fanboy opinions are worth 💩 on the streets of San Francisco.

I totally agree with penalizing the wealthiest company of all time. Beancounter Cook shuttered U.S. jobs in a record economy all in the holy name of pursuing MORE cheap profits in a Communist country throwing the U.S. worker under the bus and expects a break? The gall of people to deny their mistakes and then expect relief and reward.

If it was up to me, not our great president, I would DOUBLE or TRIPLE tariffs specifically on Apple. Profits over country Cook has proven himself the Numero Uno profiteer gaming NAFTA.

A higher price I will certainly relish paying on future purchases to teach beancounters a lesson and throw Cook out of the CEO office.

How much money is enough Tim? How much more cheap manufacturing labor can you hire and stomach while putting Americans out of work solely for MORE communist profits?

Have you no shame Tim and how do you sleep at night BETRAYING your country and the great state of Texas.

Easy. Just another unimaginative beancounter CEO whose only concern is the almighty dollar. What amazes me is the HYPOCRITES in the Democratic Party particularly the two dozen looney leftists running for president do not call out Apple to pay their fair share. Liberal gay SJW Cook gets a selective pass from the establishment and the media. Gee, what a surprise. Nothing like fair and balanced for everyone. /s

The sad legacy of Cook is obviously SIMPLE — downgrading quality while delivering profits over country, people and principles.

        No wonder Jony left…

        1. If you impose a 25% tax on something, its price will go up by 25%. If you can’t understand that, there is no point responding to the rest of your nonsense.

        2. You know all about “nonsense.”

I REPEAT: “Where do you get the “25% or more figure added to the price?” Please provide evidence links because fanboy opinions are worth 💩 on the streets of San Francisco.”

          I know, crickets…

        3. When you buy a $10.00 item in a jurisdiction with an 8% sales tax, you will pay 8% extra: $10.80. If that same $10.00 item is subject to a 25% tax, you will pay 25% extra: $12.50. That isn’t a fanboy opinion. It is a fact. If you have any doubt, try to buy the $10.00 item without paying the tax. Mr. Trump is proposing a 25% import tax on iPhones. That will add 25% to the price, just like any other tax.

        4. “Mr. Trump is proposing a 25% import tax on iPhones.”

You move manufacturing out of the U.S. for cheap beancounter Communist profits, in my opinion is not high enough.

You know, just like Democrats for decades have been soaking and denigrating U.S. businesses for higher tax rates that are never too high until Trump came along along.

Boom! The Trump economy SOARED and he did not have to use his “magic wand”…

        5. Right, GeoB, you ask a question, I provide an answer, so you change the subject. You are entitled to your opinion on tariffs, but you went beyond that to claim that a 25% tax on a product will not raise the price to consumers by 25%. That isn’t an opinion. It is a mistake of fact that you won’t admit but are trying to obscure by dropping back on the original opinion that I didn’t bother to disagree with.

  2. Tim Cook is tone deaf. Horrible timing and an arrogant move on his part. This will be a low volume product but Tim Cooks needs to make sure their ONE product the iPhone is protected. Arrogant Stupid Move.

    1. Tim Cook is stupid not learning from his mistakes. The old Mac Pro was made in USA and rather than improving that, he decides to CONSOLIDATE more production in China. Insane.

Tim “let me put all my production eggs in one communist basket” Cook is a failure at operations.

  3. With apple’s insane profit margin of roughly 35-38% on the old Mac Pro I think Apple shouldn’t be given a waver. And Apple don’t give us the lame excuse you can find the screws you need; Apple has had 6 years to build the backend to make the new Mac Pro. Apple go invest in some robot factories to maker the parts you need. Would it hurt to drop your profit margin to 20 percent? I can only guess its greed and laziness that moved the macPro out of the U.S. Sure it would cost more but what about all the BS that apple strives to be an enlightened corporation where social responsibilities trump profits.

But what’s most shortsighted with apple’s decision to make the new Mac in China is the obvious foregone conclusion that all the design secrets will be leaked to almost every OMD PC maker in China; every innovation and design advancement that Apple has in the Mac Pro will now show up in cheaper china knock offs in 6 months.

Or to put another way, dose anyone think that if Huawei was left to they on internal design and development that they would have the super advanced and competitive phones they ship now. Of course Huawei can make their own innovation but for every original idea that is an Huawei phone, how many Apple and Samsung ideas and innovations where leaked (stolen) because the phones where made in a country that openly encourages transfer of IP.

      1. I agree profitable yes but innovative maybe not. When they choose to have their innovations manufactured in a country that transfers (steals) their IP to competing vendors then they water down the differences of Apple’s products to cheap knock offs. Maybe If they choose to manufacture their products in secure environment then the could protect their innovative lead. If you don’t believe me maybe you will believe Tim Cook.

“Producing in China via “advanced manufacturing” isn’t a lot cheaper than in the US. But by manufacturing in the US, Apple will have a lot more control over its intellectual property. Transportation costs will be smaller. Lead times might shrink”

“Once automation takes off in “cheap labor” countries like China, these countries lose their cost advantage: robots cost the same anywhere.”

“Automation is the great equalizer. China is aggressively converting its manufacturing base to robots. Other “cheap labor” countries are following. Robots will eventually rule manufacturing globally. The typical manufacturing jobs of yore will mostly disappear everywhere. But the fact that manufacturing in America, when robots do most of the work, is becoming competitive with “cheap labor”

So even though he said all that Tim still chooses to spend billions in China to help them build their advance manufacturing framework.

        https://wolfstreet.com/2017/05/04/apple-ceo-vows-to-bring-manufacturing-back-to-the-us-robots-to-fill-most-of-the-jobs/

  4. Nothing like a little blather from a white nationalist to put the skids on the world’s most innovative profitable, and at times largest corporation.

Anybody who believes that MAGA-man’s protectionism is a benefit to the tech industry is delusional. Not to mention risking WWIII in the process, which will kill the tech revolution, which is highly dependent on globalism.

  5. You know Tim, you don’t have to eat “love it or leave it” or that that go back to that shthole nation of yours approach to make your MacPro computers if China is getting to be too much of an issue. There are other options, you can try to change your shthole nation, good luck with that or you can set up headquarters at a country of the free and civilized world, one where you won’t have to worry about your employees being executed because great countries have evolved beyond the death penalty.

    Something to think about.

    1. “…because great countries have evolved beyond the death penalty.”

      Oh, really?

And so, we’re just suppose to let serial rapists, child-molesters and murderers live out the rest of their natural lives, quarantined from the ‘good people’, getting room and board from the State? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal if it weren’t for the fact that you and your neighbors get to pay for the prison system… bullets are a lot cheaper and permanently take care of the problem.

      slow clap

Really great countries don’t have a need for the death penalty, because their people treat each other the way they themselves wish to be treated. Capital punishment should always be an option of last resort for those people in society that only want to steal, kill & destroy. Perpetrators of such crimes should always be aware of the fact that such choices have dire consequences.

In some parts of the U.S., ‘He needed killing’ is a reasonable defense.

      1. Thanks for the comment chinstrap. For the first paragraph, yes that’s what way roughly 106 countries without the death penalty do it. It may be more expensive but it is a lot easier to rectify when people who have been wrongly incarcerated are later found to be innocent.

Second paragraph gets my thumbs up, probably why the death penalty is appropriate for Apple’s home nation.

        1. “For the first paragraph, yes that’s what way roughly 106 countries without the death penalty do it.”

Well, 106 countries are wasting billions of dollars a year of taxpayer money to keep the lowest SCUM OF THE EARTH ALIVE.

Execute them, save billions of dollars that can IMPROVE 106 countries citizens lives on money better spent. And more importantly, sends a message to 106 countries you take a life, you LOOSE YOU LIFE.

A great lesson to criminals and our more important youth growing up to teach them life has severe consequences.

To the critics of those living in the past when innocents were wrongly convicted is HISTORY! Today we have video footage on every cellphone and cameras mounted everywhere and DNA testing is PERFECT.

In other words, no fat chance of the innocent being wrongly convicted with tech today. Someone tell that to the CLUELESS bleeding heart leftists…

        2. Bleeding heart liberals like the Pope, perhaps. He and his two predecessors have argued for a “consistently prolife stance” in which capital punishment is treated as the moral equivalent of abortion for grownups, and the victims of war, disease, and economic injustice have a right to life just like unborn babies. Perhaps you have something against Catholic theology.

        3. Altar boy for eight years growing up and practicing Roman Catholic today.

For anyone to defend or EQUATE a murderous scumbags life with an innocent growing child in a mother’s womb are not the same the difference is night and day.

          Sorry father…

        4. Ah, yet another “”cafeteria Catholic” who thinks he can pick and choose doctrines. Do you actually think you are more Catholic than the Holy Father?

          https://www.ncronline.org/news/theology/pope-revises-catechism-say-death-penalty-inadmissible

Maybe the next Conclave will elect you instead of a CLUELESS bleeding heart leftist who actually believes what that troublemaker Jesus said about loving our enemies.

Perhaps you should mention to your confessor that you reject the teaching of the Catholic Church. Perhaps not, as he might demand actual contrition before granting absolution. You would refuse, of course. It might be to leave your self-excommunication in doubt rather than certain.

        5. Like I said, “For anyone to defend or EQUATE a murderous scumbags life with an innocent growing child in a mother’s womb are not the same the difference is night and day.”

One deserves to live and the other deserves to die.

Address the common sense of that statement and not hide behind the skirt of the liberal pope.

If the church can change its views on gays they can much more easily change its views on murderers…

      2. Capital punishment relies on a perfect justice system. If it’s imperfect, sooner and later innocent people will be executed. I’d rather keep bad people in jail than execute an innocent person. People always trot out examples of horrible people to justify the death penalty, and never say anything about those executed wrongly.

    2. “There are other options, you can try to change your shthole nation”

USA is the greatest nation in the history of planet Earth. As Botty repeatedly pointed out you live in a “shthole nation” that is a total deadbeat not paying your fair share of NATO. Our great nation is carrying your sorry arse…

  6. “As we wrote on Tuesday, “On the face of it, given only a cursory glance, it’s a bad PR look in the U.S. for flush-with-cash Apple to be moving production from Texas to China while asking for a ‘tax break.’ That’s how the average schmo on the street is going to see this.”

And the “average schmo” would be correct.

Don’t beg for a tax break, then move your production, and then ask for a waiver from the consequences of that move.

  7. There are many problems with our relationship with China, namely IP theft. Unfortunately, the “deal maker in chief” has pretty much pissed off every ally we have and instead of presenting a unilateral coalition to increase bargaining power, he crudely applies tariffs, which do nothing but hurt consumers (ie: the socialist payout to soybean and pork farmers).

China is no longer the paper dragon introducing itself to the world when Nixon made his historic visit. China is a world power and they are extremely focused. They will play the long game. And with the United States becoming increasingly alone in the world, China will continue to execute on their strategy. China gives no quarter.

Applying tariffs to the Mac Pro is really chicken feed as it is a low volume product. If Trump really has temerity, apply tariffs to the iPhone and every other phone that comes into this country. Let’s see him deal with the backlash from that.

By the way, Ivanka’s company will receive an exemption from these tariffs. You know, make nepotism great again.

    1. The threat from China is why the last three presidential administrations spent two decades herding cats to assemble an Asia-Pacific alliance to counter Chinese economic imperialism. Every informed person on earth understood that no single nation could stop the world’s most populous country. It would clearly require a coalition of the willing, but it took decades of meticulous negotiations to build the alliance.

Donald John Trump unilaterally walked away from that deal when he had been President for less than three days, and he has made absolutely no attempt to replace it. He does not believe in America First. He believes in America Alone—an America run by males of exclusively Northern European descent. Everybody else can just go back where their ancestors came from.

His attempted interference with the Swedish criminal justice process demonstrates his belief that other countries do not have a right to sovereignty, except insofar as Trump permits it. His remarks on his powers under Article Two this week demonstrate his belief that he has absolute power even in domestic matters. It is no wonder that he thinks he can defeat China by the force of his winning personality without any international partners.
