5G, low-cost iPhones for 2020, says JP Morgan

Kif Leswing for CNBC:

“Our expectations include all three Sep-2020 iPhones (5.4″/6.1″/6.7″ screen sizes) will adopt OLED displays and 5G baseband modems (with support for mmWave frequencies), and at least two of the three models adopting world facing 3D Sensing (Time of Flight) driving industry leading AR/VR capabilities which can be leveraged by custom built applications (including games).”

And:

Chatterjee said he also sees Apple going after “a much more ‘value’ category than it has been used to with its recent launches.” That could be a lower-cost iPhone in 2020 that’s the same size as the iPhone 8 but without a 5G modem or OLED display.

Additional information:

  • 5.4-, 6.1- and 6.7-inch OLED screens.
  • All models to offer 5G, says JP Morgan.
  • High-end models to provide rear-facing, time of flight (TOF) 3D sensor technology for augmented reality.
  • (Sony begins manufacturing TOF sensors this summer).
  • Low-end model may lack 5G or OLED.
  • Expect 195 million iPhone sales in 2020, analysts said.

MacDailyNews Take: Will we really need to wait until 2020 before Apple gives us a lower-cost iPhone SE replacement? Though 5G services should begin to start getting interesting by then…

  1. Couldn’t care less about 5G until it’s fully rolled out however a smaller high end iPhone would be fantastic.

Still want Apple to implement a product family like this:

iPhone Touch 4.7″, 5.5″ (Classic design with TouchID.)
iPhone Air 5.1″, 6.1″ (Thin and light design with edge to edge LCD and FaceID.)
iPhone Pro 5.4″, 6.5″ (Slightly thicker edge to edge OLED with FaceID.)
iPhone Studio 6.7″ (Same as iPhone Pro but with big high end display with true SLR camera.)

Obviously substitute whatever screen sizes you would prefer but I think the product family makes sense and would offer something for everyone.
The iPhone Studio could be priced well over a $1000 because it offers SLR like quality. Saying that the rest of the line should be more competitively priced as I think Apple has gone beyond the limit of what a lot of people are willing to pay.

  2. A 5.4 inch higher-end iPhone would be perfect. Looks like I will be hanging on to my iPhone X for one more year. Truth be told, I am more interested in 5G for iPad Pro than iPhone at this time.

  3. 5G = USB-C adaptability. Nada from most, Apple, MS, etc.

What good is 5G without infrastructure and alignment from vendors?

Oh and your data allocation disappears in 10 minutes, what a joke.
