Mail rules in the Mail app on your Mac are robust and powerful but they no longer work well in a world where we get email on multiple devices. Instead, use iCloud email rules, or filters you can set on your email server. These rules will be applied on the server before the messages get to your devices, so they will work properly and consistently.
MacDailyNews Take: Thanks to Gary for yet another useful tip! We’ve got some old Mail rules to convert to iCloud email ASAP.
You can also add email aliases on the server.
iCloud Rules are very limited, and miles behind regular roles, Awkward to Edit, and sometimes don’t apply,
totally agree with you on this one. extremely limited. outlook has a more robust set of rules.
Great idea, IF iCloud would have the same email rules as in an email application for Mac or Windows.
If anything, the above article may work better with services such as gMail and others.
Also…. is there a way to copy an extensive set of email rules from the app to the iCloud settings?
thought about this as well. so far, i have not found a solution. at the moment, it has to be individually done, as far as i know.
Does it really matter? If one of my devices moves messages based on local rules, the results will still be seen across all devices.
I have rules set up on the mac but they only initiate when I open my mac! I want an email to foward to a customer every time the email is received on my end (usually daily around 8am) and it will ONLY trigger the rule when I open my mac for the day. Usually around 8:30am. It does not apply to the ios8 mail app.
Mail rules are not Robust enough.
