Apple is separating iTunes into new Apple Music, TV and Podcasts apps, but it isn’t really killing the veteran media management software it launched in April 2003… Don’t worry. All your music, movies and podcasts will be fine – they’ll just be stored in a different place and made available through their specific apps. All your playlists, ripped albums and purchased content will be made available through the Music app, which will also integrate iTunes Match, if you use it.
“Users will have access to their entire music library, whether they downloaded the songs, purchased them or ripped them from a CD,” Apple says.
Turns out we’ve been wasting time syncing our devices with iTunes for the last 18-years — who knew? Apple now seems to think it would have been just as simple to let us engage in these tasks using the Finder, which we will do from now on…

Apple, especially under Steve Jobs, has shown a great and admirable willingness to cannibalize themselves. They obliterated their iPod business with the iPhone, for one example. But, when it comes to iTunes, they seem paralyzed by fear of change. Apple paralyzed by fear is not a pretty thing and it doesn’t yield pretty things. Apple needs to do a better job of explaining this. I can not count the number of time people have come up to me in the last 2 weeks asking my what will happen to their music now that Apple is “getting rid of iTunes”. I wish they would also explain what if anything will change if we have older equipment that can not run the latest OS.
I would guess that if you’re running older equipment with an older OS, you will still be running iTunes, as before, with no change.
Just because the new OS (Catalina) will split iTunes into 3 separate apps, it doesn’t mean that iTunes in older OS’es will suddenly and magically disappear or stop working.
Very leery of this – look how they botched the Apple TV’s interface literally days after Jobs’ death.
Laugh at me in you must, but, my main use of iTunes is Internet Radio! It’s still free.

I’m still uncertain about the TV app, as I have several hundred ripped movies in my library, along with as many iTunes purchased ones. Currently, the TV app on AppleTV does not recognize those non-iTunes movies. Will that be corrected in the new app for MacOS?
