    1. Well, there is the issue of a Fall release. After six years of waiting, I expect to hear griping about the Mac Pro and XDR display not being immediately available.

You might also hear some griping about pricing. The computer (base config) and monitor seem reasonably priced versus comparable PC equipment. But the monitor stand seemed awfully expensive, no matter how artfully it is engineered. And who knows how much the Mac Pro upgrades (processors, graphics cards, etc.) will run. A fully configured Mac Pro will be an expensive beast!

But won’t it be great to see a Mac Pro dominating the stand-alone workstation space again?! And isn’t it clever for Apple to use a sub-chassis design that supports rack mount.

      1. Not from me. I’m just glad to hear delivery might not happen until 2020. All my needs are taken care of until September so it’s perfect timing for me.

      2. Im sure there will be many aftermarket stand solutions for much less !!
When they announced the stand and its price
was not one of the better moments today.

But, overall, im very happy with everything i saw !

Good Job Tim and Team 👊👍

    2. Would calling them the return of Silicon Graphics be a complaint? Because I do think it’s fitting. That was a niche market though and priced accordingly.

Meanwhile… who tells the T2 who’s boss? The owner of the machine, or Apple?

    3. I’ll bite.

They made the cheese grater motif even uglier.
PCIe 3.0 is what’s in the 5-year-old trashcan. Based on their demonstrated commitment to the product, it will be 4 PCIe generations out of date before its next refresh.
Half the i/o ports are on the top of the box.
Pricetag ensures low adoption rate, which means PCIe device manufacturers will not bother with macOS drivers, which means it will be useful only for products made by Apple’s tight partner companies (Adobe/Autodesk for now). You must sell this thing at a loss to get it on desks. It is not an established brand.
They’re selling a display without a stand or a mounting plate. Let’s just think about that.

      1. Just looked overt the specs on Apple’s site.
On the back is two USB 3 ports, two Thunderbolt 3 ports and two 10Gb ethernet ports.
On top is two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Not half.

  1. I very much enjoyed reading down to the last review — all enthusiastic even Affinity, my PS replacement because I refuse to be shackled to Adobe’s debtors’ prison.

  2. Yo Jim: I’ll posit that no Apple follower thinks the products suck and I’ll assume this MP won’t disappoint. In fact, I’ll guess and hope this machine does it superbly.
With that said, the so called “usual suspects” have had a right to moan/groan and your comment is consistent with your fanboi position that side steps the ridiculous span of time that Tim and gang have failed the pro users. Let’s not forget, Tim and crew failed to update the “pro” machine for a long/long time and even the stand-in “pro” machine actually started a migration of pros away from the platform because it was more a museum piece than one fitting into a working studio. Your comment is a bit like a child’s “I told you so” stated from a place of safety.

    1. Well Ron… the ‘usual suspects’ are not the ones who complained about the failure of the trash can pro… or lack of attention to pros in general by Apple……I WAS ONE OF THEM who complained …. way before most jumped on board… starting years and years ago …

But my comment is about those who continued to ridicule Apple and Tim past Apple full acknowledgment of dropping the ball 2 years ago and pre announcing through a news conference that they will be correcting the mistakes made.. both on the pro computer and display side.
Despite, the USUAL SUSPECTS , went on bashing Apple and neglecting what was said and continued predicting all kinds of garbage for what Apple would eventually deliver.. mocking left and right with total disregard for what Apple had acknowledged .

Now that does not make me me a BLIND FANBOY… but it makes the Usual Suspects BLIND AND DEAF HATERS AND WHINERS …
(And by the way, of course I’m a fan boy.. or why would any of us waste our time on forums like this.. unless we are trolls. Yup i am a fanboy.. nothing negative about that as u try to make it sound…. but here is the key.. im neither a BLIND OR DEAF fanboy or a hater.
And believe me .. even if Apple delivered a custom made computer to those usual suspects personal specs .. they would still complain.. thats what they do !

  3. Are you kidding me? Yes way over priced how can you tell you a running 8k streams if the monitor is only display 6k? And for 5k the stand doesn’t come with the monitor? Come on people. AMD will probably release an eypc processor with 32 cores and kick the hell out of intel especially when the intel needs a patch.

I’m tired of iPhone. I see it everyday. Sometimes for several hours. Know if the add the feature where iPhone would cook or clean or create world piece I’m ready to see another presentation about it.

One last thing Linus of Linux fame sucks! And so does his software. But with everybody else adding their work it has actually gotten better.

        1. If you’re editing 8K “good enough” probably won’t cut it and the extra $1500 for 2.5 times the brightness and hundreds of times better contrast with 100% p3 compatibility is probably worth it to a professional.

        2. That monitor has gotten tepid reviews mostly because of dead pixels. “Great at first…” Also NOT as good for grading as Apple’s and others. Okay for regular use though.

    1. Wow a rant par excellence … a little more detail to content and legibility might have been nice mind. Slowing down your ranting might be helpful in this regard so it makes some sense to the reader. So only a 4 out of 10 from me I’m afraid.

  4. I am happy they are finally bringing this to fruition. I will be purchasing 2 Mac Pros and 2 Displays the minute I can order them. Thanks Apple, and Thank you for listening to the PRO users, and the companies that NEED your PRO machines to continue to grow. 🙂

  5. “It’s just brutally powerful, yet so elegantly designed… Took you long enough, but bravo, Apple, bravo!”

For once I have to agree with MDN. There will be a lot to learn about how to build, support and use these Macs and accesories, but I look forward to it. One of my vid production clients already wants two, out of the gate, to start transitioning asap away from pre-2013 Mac Pros.

Vaporware no more (assuming ship dates don’t slip away…)!

And let’s hope they haven’t been scheduled for assembly in China!

  6. If you go the Apple route and buy the entry level Mac and the Pro Display monitor you’re close to $10,000. And I think it’s really dumb that Apple is starting out with a lousy 256GB SSD. I have a 256GB SSSD in my old White MacBook! I’m curious how expensive this machine will be if you max it out. Gotta be more than $15,000. It better be REALLY snappy!!

    1. Why build a machine that cost so much that only a handful can afford? Perhaps Epyc, when release won’t cost anywhere near what Xeon cost and AMD will do 32, 64, and 128 cores… HAHAHAHA. Well let’s let a 128 core cost at least as much. Let’s hope there are motherboard companies that would build a single and dual socket boards with at least 6 PCIe 4.0 and how about all 6 be x32 PCIe+ capable. or just for giggles all 64 bit channels… who knows, AMD seems to be on fire these days. Now let’s see, how about the ability to max out ram on the motherboard at 1T.

      motherboard 500.00
processors 1000, 2000, 4000 dollars AMD will need the cash for Zen 4
      1 T ram
      2 M.2s
now computer engineers have at it… what can you add to such a box to make it go even faster.

since 8k is going to be the standard, panel manufacturers stop wasting resources on 4K. give us panels that when we claim we are working with 8K we can see 8K.

    2. I would imagine the original drive would be OS and apps only. Then big ass RAID arrays for all the data you will be working on. 512GB really should have been the starting size.
Pro users please give you opinion…

      1. Its a base config, which is what most pros will buy, then populate as they wish. Why whinge about it?

In 1990, my brand new Macintosh IIfx with 24-bit graphics card and 16 MB of RAM and an Apple HiRes RGB monitor was just a shade under $13,000. It propelled our business into whole new areas of business. There was no PC equivalent, and no PC software that could handle 24-bit colour (actually 32 for CMYK and RGBA). Was it worth it? Did Windows users tout they could build their own “exactly the same only better” PC? Did they think we were crazy? Yes, yes and yes. But we were literally years ahead for a couple years, and that machine and the others we subsequently purchased, paid for themselves within the first month or two.

These are tools for professionals, not hobbyists, and priced accordingly. Ask a mechanic why they spend four-to-five times what we pay for their SNAPON or MAC wrenches, pliers, etc. As pros, we get to write-off some of the cost as well. Pros will buy this because they need tools that WORK, have excellent SERVICE and a goid WARRANTY. Care to try matching any of THAT on your homebrew junk?

Quit bitching about the base config – thats not the end-of-the-line, its the beginning!

        Sheesh!

        Dmz

        1. The base 256GB SSD is under-specced. No doubt about it.

Given how much Apple overcharges for SSDs & RAM, it’s another example of squeezing the customers just to make a plausible sounding price point.
